Newbie

Just found out about this site from a mechanic here in the great city of Charleston SC. Great site with alot of good info. I just became a owner of a 1994 V20 Fisherman and all I have to say is wow. The boat is awsome! The only bad thing about it is the Johnson 175 on the back of it is giving me problems. I did not realize that it was such a popular design until today!

Re: Newbie

Welcome to da site ... we try to have some fun around here ... glad ya like yer "V" ... the more you use it, the more you'll like it ;) ... the good news about your Johnnie 175 is it should be a fairly easy thing to find a good OMC tec in the greater Chas area ... have you run a compression test on it?...the carbs probably need to be rebuilt ... those are real workhorse motors and once ya chase the bugs out, that'll be a GOOD performer ;) ...

Fish, there's an extensive history of failure of VROs on OMC (and Merc) from those years ... and of course when the auto-oiler fails, so do the MOTOR :o ... IT'S YO THANG...DO WATCHA WANNA DO ... but I can tell ya, dis ol' fat-boy's always disabled the VRO and gone to mixin' oil/gas ... yeah, it's another step, but it'll save you a step out to the motor fix-it-or-replace-it -store ;) ... for 3.99 an accu-mix bottle makes it EASY ;) ...

Welcome to the site Fish. These V-Vets (as I call them) know their stuff and their info is priceless. I have a 175 Johnson also and have had good luck with it so far. As REEL stated above, I mix my fuel and it's no big deal to do, 50:1 mix and your golden. Congrats on the new V and these guys love pictures so make sure to post many. ;D

Re: Newbie

Spareparts,

I have not got a hold of him yet but I am still trying. Thanks for all your help and introducing me to the site! I am going to go ahead and get the VRO disconnected, carbs cleaned, and fix my problem. She (the boat) has got a long summer and fall ahead of her so I am going to go ahead and do it right! Plus my fiance gave me that look when she overheard me talking about a new 200 E-Tec! :-X Hopefully I can put another 40# King in the boat in a couple of weeks!

I keep my V in old village behind the Scotchman where Colman Y's off right at Half Moon on Rose Lane. I will take some pictures and post them soon.

I am all about a raft up! :D

Ever done the Santee Locks Cruise?...

I never have but always wanted to ...sounds like a great route for a bunch of V-20s 8) ...

Re: Newbie

I have never done the locks but I would love to try it.

I have been told it is an awsome trip. I use to have a Scout 172 Sport Fish and it did not have the range for that trip so it was never really an option for me unless took several blatter tanks. It had a old 90 Rude on the back of it that drank gas like I drink Bud Lights! :o

How many V-20's are around Charleston that yall know of? I have not see very many at all. I saw a ton of them in Wilmington NC a month or so ago and quite a few in Morehead last time I was up their.

Re: Newbie

I was cutting back thru the old village near Mark Gouger's shop yesterday and saw a V beside a carport with a yellow cat sailbote on the other side. BTW Reel, I saw your buddys powercat at Mark's shop yesterday, pretty impresive. As far as V's around here, theres one at City Marina( center), a suspect dually(haven't got that close) over near Hobcaw, seen a v up at Wild Dunes last week, theres the one by the soccer fields that never moves. My buddy,Carrey Davis has his eternal project V in his front yard, saw another at Palmetto Marine this morning. Chris V has a V-21 at his shop(his personal boat). Saw Tally Ho up at P&P in Monks Corner. I see 'em all the time, try tell them about the site, who knows, we might have enough to start our own fleet.

Spare,

I think I am going to visit Chris this week. Do you go on charlestonfishing.com any?

Re: Newbie

used to, got tired of the bs, anytime some one asked a simple question, he would get flamed by 15 a-holes, too many people asking where the "Grillage is, or the Crucifix. I have a better time here ;D

Chris is a good tech, but if you can get Stevie, he's one of the best

Re: Newbie

So ya came face-to-face w/ Phat Kat?...not lately, but have spent many hours in the stream on that puppy ... that guy puts FISH IN THE BOAT 8) ... some days better than others, but NEVER back to Tollers w/out heavy fish-box ;D ...

The "V" by the soccer fields (James Island?) is the one I spotted last year ... it did look pretty "dug in" :) ...

Re: Newbie

Yep, I know what ya mean spare, I am more of a lurker now and I don't post as much as I use to.

I checked with Chris and his rates are really high. He did good work on my Scout in the past but now that he has his own shop his prices have gone up. I will call Stevie again.

Re: Newbie

average price around town is $90 per hour, longshore is $105, Sea Ray is $95. Most of the independants are around $75. BTW, I was at Duke's this afternoon, spotted two more on his yard, one a parts boat( I inquired about the windshield for MJ, he's going to let me know), the other was a center with a Frankenstien Johnrude on it. Another one is going to show up there shortly. Got a center coming over to my house Sat so I can hang a 200 Merc on it. I told ya'll, they're multiplying ;D
