Possible V Owner
Hello all...First post although I have been reading on the site for some time now. Looking at an 87 V w/a 87 Yamaha 225 on it. The engine model is V6EXCELXH. Does anyone have more information on this motor? Thank you and great site.

Re: Possible V Owner
That YAMAHA is one of the early model's known as the EXCEL series. I'm not real familiar with them myself either. YAMAHA made a good outboard, I just aint a YAMAHA fan myself(there to slow for me, got used to outrunning guys with 40HP YAMAHA's on there jon boats with my 25HP SUZUKI ;D).

Re: Possible V Owner
Welcome to the board!!
I like Yamaha and had a 89 175hp, They are good motors!! But with any used motor you have no idea how its been treated, make sure you ask questions!! 1. ask to do a compersion test, all shoub be over 100 and be with in 10 of each other. Yamaha like to carbon up also, so if its in the low 100 a decarb can bring thwm numbers back up. 2. Ck the lower unit for oil, you be surprised how many used motors have water in them!! 3. Before 1994 Yamaha used steel for its shifting rods, and they rot out. Replacement has to be done by removing the power head, and depending if your motor guy likes you or not the price can be as low as $500 to as high as $1000 to replace! You can look but not always see the rot down by the cavtion plate. There is a small opening were you will see the rod. But most times it is rotted just below and hard to see. 4. I think Yamaha has one of the best iol injection, but as with any you never know when it will fail!! Ask me I know! :'( So keep it maintained always or disconnect and mix. With any used motor you take your chances, but there are great deals out there for us poor guys in a rich mans sport!! Good Luck!! |
Re: Possible V Owner
Thank you everyone for all the input. We will be test running on Sat. morning as well as a compression check and going over with a little finer of a comb. You really never know what you will find when on the water but hopefully this engine has been taken care of. From the outside it looks as if brand new. I'll take that with a grain of salt though since the cowlings don't run the boat. Thanks again and this has to be one of the best forums on the net these days (and I visit a lot of them).

All used boats have an issue but on the V's it seams like any issue is easily repaired by the owner/do it yourselfer. Oh , where might that driveway be? |
Re: Possible V Owner
I live in Newark, DE. Boat is located near Atlantic City, NJ. I looked in the gallery and didn't see it posted so I doubt the new owner is aware of this site.

All right, another De. Member. We'll be taking over this site in no time. ;D
Parishht, not to high jack the thread, but what did use again for your floor hatch cover ?? Also, do we have the same year V, This 78 project V has scuppers coming out of the splash well. You have a shot of of your transom ? Do you have a 20" transom as well. ? I'm raising my transom to 25". "Hopefully". |

Yup, same year, 78. I think I do have the 20", it looks the same. Best shot that I have of my transom: http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...t/100_0420.jpg The hole to the right of teh motor is mirrored on the left side. They are drain holes. The scuppers are inside from the floor to the engine area. My backflows are broken, so I keep corks in the engine are to stop the ocean from coming in. Floor hatches - at Home Depot, they have a trex like deck material. It is gray and comes in 8 fooy lengths and is solid like real wood. Then I painted them white with plastic paint. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...cStoreNum=4110 This says 21.97 per 12 foot, I think the 8 footers were 16& change. Also the picture shown shows the grooved side, the other side has a wood like pattern. |
Re: Possible V Owner
Hey parishht, How many HP is that Evinrude, and what year?, looks like mine! ;) 8)
|
Re: Possible V Owner
The Evinrude is a 150 HP I call it 1990 vintage,
because the guy I bought the V from got the motor new in 1992 with full warranty (he kept all teh paperwork) but when I look up the model number on the website, it comes up as a 1990 motor. |
Re: Possible V Owner
Parishht, Its good to know we have the same year...you know, like when I need parts. ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o :P
