Fishing with wire
Looking to setup some wire rigs to troll for stripers. I was thinking of buying some cheapy setups cause I heard the wire really destroys your gear. Anybody got any suggestions about rods and reels that they've had some luck with. ???

Re: Fishing with wire
They make rods with rollers instead of the normal eyes, that's what you'll need for wire line. I'd skip the wire line and go with heavy test braided line. I ditched my wire line this year because the braided works better (goes to the bottom better in deeper water) , is cheaper, and easier to deal with than wire line. Just my 2cents! My Penn 320s have worked just fine for wire/braided/mono for catching stripers.

So you troll umbrellas etc with braided? How do u determine depth of rig??

Re: Fishing with wire
We use level wind reels and count the "bars" Each bar is about 10', give or take.

Re: Fishing with wire
I make my own rods, I have a nice Lamiglass blank I made with carbide guides and a roller tip.
I use a Penn 114HS with all wire, I use a 4 foot leader of 100# Jenki mono, with a 5 oz jig. If you are new to wire You can have the guy that spools it for you to put a 3 or 4 foot mono between each 100 foot section, this will allow you to no how many 100 foot sections you have out (normaly 300) and you can jig on the mono instead of the wire. I use all wire and been doing it for a long time. But I kink it from time to time and there goes all the wire to the sea. It sucks to fish this way!! especially when there are all shorts around!! But when the fish just arent biting this will save the day!! http://syncboard.com/albums/Fishing/..._020.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Fishing/..._021.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Fishing/..._022.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Fishing/..._027.sized.jpg http://syncboard.com/albums/Fishing/..._028.sized.jpg |

Re: Fishing with wire
What are you using for braid??
Are you using a heavier jig? how much braid do you have to let out to hold bottom? I can hold bottom with as little as 3oz with wire in 30 feet of water. I agree wire is a pain!! But it works! I am opened minded! If braid works thats the way to go!! |

Re: Fishing with wire
Braided worked better than wire to get to bottom while trolling. I wouldn't have beleived it until my cousin brought his rod w/ braided on a trip earlier this year and he was staying deeper than I was w/ wire line and didn't need to let out as much as I did (we were using the same weights and type of rig...just different colors)... That's when I ditched the wire line.
Plus the braided line is thinner so you can get more on a spool. (and that's also why it trolls deeper/easier than wire) |

Re: Fishing with wire
Thanks fellas!!! I am amazed braided works that well. I got it on my surf rod, but never really thought about it for trolling. I thought i would need downriggers to use it.

Re: Fishing with wire
Hey guys, why in the world do you use wire line?
Im confused...why not just use wire leaders? Hardwire leaders will handle any toothy critter I catch offshore so why not a striper? I didnt think they were toothy neways? |

Re: Fishing with wire
Stink I think its used to get down to the fish. Similar to lead core. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Shoot, I ain't never used no stinkin wire.

Re: Fishing with wire
Yes it is used to troll a jig off the back of the boat, we to hold bottom in any were from 30 to 60 feet of water. Lays the jig nice and flat banging the bottom all the way to get the Bass.

Re: Fishing with wire
I started using wire line because it got to deeper water without using as much line as the heavy test mono line. so at the time it was the best for trolling off the bottom. I didn't know (until this year) that braided line came in as heavy of a test as it does.
As a matter of fact, we use mono line leaders when striper fishing regardless of the lines on our pole. I'm not worried about a striper chomping the line, just trying to get my line down to them without using so much of it! By the way, you do have to be aware that both braided line and wire line have no stretch to them. So if a big fish hits hard and your drag is too tight you could rip the hook right out of it's mouth.... |

Re: Fishing with wire
I have a couple of old penn 49 mariners that I have rigged with monel for deep wire fishing but I hate using it. You got to watch the kinks etc but it will go deep and at times you cant get hits on anything else ..Sometimes I use 24 oz sinkers to bounce bottom when I'm fishing 90 feet deep or so with double bucktail rigs or fake eels. Re: Fishing with wire
I was looking into wire cause I see alot of guys trolling it and catching. I trolled mono with deep running outfits and it never gets down like I want, especially this year when only thing catching was deep running rigs. I don't like the idea of wire but I dont llike not catching either. I gonna try the braid see how it works. You sure can fit a ton of it on a conventional reel. Im not into downriggers either, hate the idea of drilling holes in my boat and having these setups around all the time. Anyone use planing boards??

Reg...I like to put release-clips on planers...requires two rods, but worth it when hooked up ;) ...

Re: Fishing with wire
I have been using 32oz Mojo and have no problem with mono and holding the bottom in 40' of water. You can us an inline sinker if you want to get the umbrella rig down father. I like using a 32oz mojo for the bottom a 24oz mojo to run a little higher and on the out side poles I usually run umbrells and one of them with a 10 to 15oz in line weight. This will give you a good rang of depth and all rigs are of different colors. When we get into the fish if one seems to working better than the other we switch so we have at least three of the ones that the fish are hitting. We have had no problem catching large stripers in the winter and have only once not limited out. I run mono on all of the poles.
