NJ Fishing Report 2023 1 Attachment(s) Finally in the water! Got out Sunday (twice with different crews) for limits of Black Seabass at Sea Girt reef. 60 fish for the day, plus some red hake. The wind won't stop... Word is there are giant BFT at The Farms. |
|
Skunk, well done, LUV those Sea bass and I've heard the same about the Tuna. A friend of mine, say's he will be heading out this weekend. ENJOY G |
|
Good job ,skunk. Yeah, wind has been brutal here also. Mostly SE, which is our worst wind. Sloppy in the gulf and the bays. enjoy some fresh fish |
|
Nice catch! Still alittle early here in NC but they are catching nice Mahi off shore and bottom feeders inshore. Going on vacation next week at the Outer Banks. Hope the weather will let up enough to let us catch a few fish. |
|
Nice, skunk! Blowing here this morning. Gale warning until Saturday afternoon. We went to the Keys week before last. Never had such a hard time catching legal Mahi there before. Spent a lot of time and fuel for not many fish. Still, it was better than being at work. |
|
Seabass are still filling the cooler along with ling(red hake). Found some really nice seabass out at the Dave Moran (18 miles from Manasquan) but Sea Girt reef and Klondike rocks still have keeper fish. I caught a HADDOCK in NJ! Delicious! Dave Moran was covered up in sand eels. We saw two 50lb bluefin go airbourne. Sonar looked like they were shooting thru the sand eels but no takers... inshore bluefin is about to pop. https://i.imgur.com/QDsqHlnl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ZHKwl9ul.jpg |

WOW, now that's a lot of fish, enjoy. |
|
Purdy feesh!!!!!!!!!!!! Just a tad jealous. Nice double dropper rig, looks like you have a diamond jig on the bottom instead of a weight  |

Same here, the ones I tie look very similar. I use cheap 80lb mono in most cases, fishing in 80-100+ ft. I think I have mentioned it before here - my motto, 'y'all break em, I make em:haha:." |

Roger that. I can't remember what size hook I used bottom fishing but the eye is big enough for 80. Agree that smaller hooks this won't work. |

Finally found yellowfin tuna 77 miles out. Then went to Hudson canyon for tilefish. Also got some 5 pound skipjacks on the light spinng rods. Stopped at the Resor on the way in for our 4 seabass allowed. Wreck is covered in nice ones. We had 4 as soon as we hit bottom. All keeper size but we dropped a few more times and culled to get the bigger one's. 5 minutes of nonstop fish and we were done. https://i.imgur.com/b4DMpkIl.jpg Then when cleaning tuna at 930 next morning got the 2 biggest dock bass ever(31..ish:zip:) on tuna chunks. That bass was caught on a little penn spinner meant for crappie and sunnies. https://i.imgur.com/4BIrSKPl.jpg |

nice looking bunch of fish, Skunk. I've never had tilefish, heard they are delicious. Glad you able to get out, almost too hot to fish down here. |

Now, let me see if I read this right, you guy's caught Tile Fish, Yellow Fin, Skipjacks, Sea Bass and the next day just sitiing around at the dock, a Striper decided to take a hook, again just sitting around at the dock, I get it, I get it, you had a great two day's!!!! So what I'm trying to say is this, I'm FREAKIN' JEALOUS!!!! :clap:Never had Skipjacks before, I had Tile fish once and I thought it had a lobster taste to it, but what the hell do I know, I'm just a jealous guy. :nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzYNwN3UWVU Enjoy & WELL DONE!!!! Got to dock at 3AM. My crew overslept and I caught 7 dock stripers from 12" to 24" until first light when the crew showed up. Used 1/4 ounce jighead with 4"FinS with an inch cut off. Manaquan River is loaded with quarter sized bunker and small bass are crushing them on a running tide in the dark. https://i.imgur.com/tGGyly9l.jpg We went out looking for mahi and had to go to Chicken canyon before we found them. Beautiful blue water. Mud Hole and Glory had green water and no fish. Fish were small and we shook off a lot. Some were taco sized. We kept 18. https://i.imgur.com/6kHHRJjl.jpg I guy on my dock was cleaning a 40 pound bluefin tuna after I cleaned the mahi. Dropped a tuna chunk back on the dock rod and got broke off quick. Had to up the game with a bigger rod. Got 5 stripers from 26" to 33" and that was at NOON! Stripers love sushi! https://i.imgur.com/Vh8dY2Kl.jpg |

Got in on the inshore bluefin tuna / squid bite off Seaside Heights. It is a large area east of Seaside lumps and north of the Tolten lump. Big fleet there. can't miss it. Less than 15 miles from Manasquan inlet. maybe 10 off the beach. Still get cell service there! 85-90 ft of water. Got out last Tuesday at 130 PM and had a 57" BFT and back by 6PM My buddy's wife was catching dock stripers while I cleaned tuna. Got out again Saturday at 3 pm. Caught 10 gallons of squid. No tuna bites. Saw a few boated but it was slow. https://i.imgur.com/uokCasBl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/l11bGp8l.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hAjDxJpl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/NTdGfcpl.jpg |

We were out Monday at the spot off Seaside Heights. Jigging squid and putting them out live. We got about a 60 pound bluefin to the boat and broke off the leader. We had him on the the heaviest rod. Penn two speed 80w on a bent butt in a swivel rodholder. Cranked him in fast after two runs. With the swivel near the rod tip, I told my buddy, "pick up the rod and walk it back so I can gaff him". He said " I'll just leader him" and I said "we always lose when we do that". So he takes up the leader, taking tension off the main line and the main line and swivel immediately flip over the rod tip.The fish dives and 'click'... leader breaks... I saw a V20 cuddy with a hardtop out there and another with a bimini. Wonder how they did? We stopped at a wreck on the way home and got our seabass limit and a keeper fluke to add to a gallon of fresh squid. |
|
I know someone like that!!!:fight: I guess you were pissed all day, but you got some nice Sea Bass and a Fluke. Nothing beats a good day on the water with an EX FRIEND. :haha::haha::haha:Just kidding. G |

Labor Day- Went looking for yellowfins out near Texas Tower. Nothing. Passing through Glory pots on the way out at first light. I had to try one pot... got this bull & cow while holding two rods as we passed the first pot! Ended up becoming a canyon Mahi/Tilefish trip...as many of our tuna dreams become.... https://i.imgur.com/ZIQxIRsl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/wLclC8Sl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ft2NOnYl.jpg |

Skunk, Labor Day looked like labor pulling in all those fish.:nice: Nice catch of fish and WOW, really great eating, ENJOY!!! G |

Got out Tuesday to the Triple Wrecks area. The fleet was 10 miles past the Haskell. We got there late 8 am. Chunked one nice yellowfin quick and then we sucked the rest of the day. Many boats had 3,5,10.... The mahi pots in the Chicken were barren. The Glory pots were not very good but we did get a few small ones and one nice cow. Fantastic weather. Long 13 sec swell. Thats all going to crap the rest of the week. https://i.imgur.com/nVuErBNl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/QyzEgAMl.jpg |

That Tuna sure looks good. I just had a dinner of Columbia River Salmon from the grille, but my mouth’s watering thinking of a nice Tuna steak, seared on the outside and rare in the middle. How do you do your Tuna? |
|
Skunk, way to go, you say it sucked the rest of the day after you caught Charlie, well a few Mahi made your day so much better. :nice: You got their late, what's that saying, the early fisherman (bird) catch the fish (worm).:haha: Enjoy G |
|
Been out for seabass a few times. Its not lights out but you can put together a nice catch. Big Stripers on bunker Thursday and Friday outside Manasquan Inlet. It is on! |
