Let's not forget these boats were designed for 235 hp and those pups weren't very light either. Maybe if you had a 235 and a small live well near the stern that might be about the same weight.

I agree!

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Lets not forget that there were only 2 strokes around at the time these boats were built.
4 stroke's are a bit heavier then they were! thats alot of weight and even though it must get up and screw! I bet the water is coming in the scuppers as we speak!!

Too much weight is probably WHY he's sellin' it...

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Don't we all know a guy with twin 140'S. He might not have a scupper issue depending on the year of his boat. 610 lbs is alot of weight though. Better have a really stout transom.

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Wow, I just read all your comments about the V20 with the 225 Honda on it. Well, I just bought that boat. Have not had it out on the water yet. Y'all have got me scared - do you think there is a problem?

well i'd be ready to pull it back out of the water. does it have good scuppers on it? Not like i can say alot i'm working on putting twins on my 78 v-20 but the thing is the twins are twin 225 johnson V6's. I see he wanted $14K for it what did you end up in it? If you don't mind me asking?

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Jackman, with the boat on the trailer and the motor tilted down, put your foot on the lower unit and proceed to put your weight on it as if you were gonna stand on it. See if you notice any movement in that transom. If the whole trailer moves up and down, the transom is pretty stout. If you see the outboard springing forward and back and trailer not moving, you might have some wiggle in that transom.

Also, as others have mentioned on this board before, take a rubber mallet and tap around on the transom to listen for dead spots where delamination may have occurred.

If all of the above checks out, put it in the water and never look back! All these guys are just jealous cause they don't have a 225hp 4 stroke! You tha man! Let us know what your top speed is - inquiring minds want to know!

Besides the above, Jackman I just noticed you said, "Ya'll", so you must be a pretty good guy. RAP looks like we have another southern boy on the board! ;D ;D

I recently got a quote on a new 200HP Honda for my '86 StepV. $17K for a new outboard including prop and controls. That's 4X what I paid for my boat and motor!

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Jackman, keep us posted on how she goes...no kiddin', it's gonna be interesting to see if that motor REALLY IS too much weight...it may not be...either way, bet she'll go like 40 h-lls!!...I'm glad somebody on the board got that boat...stay in touch... :D...

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

if the transom is strong, and those 610lbs dont make the stern squat "uncomfortably" low, that is going to be one bad a$$ ride! Good luck.

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Hi y'all,
I paid $14,500 for the outfit. We made the deal over the phone - he had it on Ebay but ended it early because of our deal. We met about half way between his home and mine. He lives in Columbus GA, and I, in Belleview Florida. We met at Val??? Georgia, just over the Florida border. The boat trailed home good.
I did jump on the engine, and the transom looked good - I did knock on it with my knuckles to check for hollow spots - did not hear any.
When I got it home, I ordered Sea Star hydraulic steering for it (from Ebay - $770 delivered). Installed it myself. I did not like the fact that the steering on the boat wasn't even "NO_FEEDBACK". I feel safer now.
The guy said the boat will do 55. I'll let you know when I take it out. Will be soon.
thanks for you comments and help,
Jack

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Hi Guy,
Well, I just took the boat out today on Lake Weir. Plopped it off the trailer and it did seem to ride a little low in the back - took some pix, but don't know how to post them here. Fired the engine up and couldn't hear it running - wow! so quiet. Left the dock and opened her up. Does 47 mph at max rpm (5600). _ don't know where the guy I bought it from got 55 mph??? With the boat just resting in the water, there was about 3" of water behind the transom and forward of the splash plate. The holes on the outside of the boat were under water by about 3" also. As soon as I accelerated, the water disappeared from the splash plate and transom. Ran great !! The hydraulic steering was so easy to stear the boat. The guy I bought the boat from told me when I was ready to take-off, to tilt the motor all the way down, then trim it after planing out. That's what I did. At 4000rpm, the boat did 41 mph. Tried trimming the engine - the bow was up more than I was used to, so I did not pitch the engine up too much. I did notice as I accelerated, (there is an aluminum angle iron on the top of the transom) that I could see a little (about 1/8" or so) movement in the aluminum between it and the top of transom. The transom seems real strong, so I am not sure if that little movement is significant - what do you think?
Seems like a great ride - think I am ready for the gulf.
Jack

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Hey Jackman, just wanted to run something by you, I have a Robalo 1820 center console with a Merc 150 500lbs. when I would drift in any chop with that boat water would splash up inside the splash well pretty good but would drain right out with each bob up and down, but my scuppers were not below water line when it was at rest. I would be a little concerned in any heavy water if your scuppers are below water line even at rest. I maybe wrong with the v20's but IMHO that would have me concerned

Re: Watchout RAP!  Another Honda out there

Thanks for the warning. There are 2 batteries in the starboard rear area - I was thinking about moving them up front - did that on my 1996 OMC Neptune 18' CC - seemed to help a lot. Of course, I could put a nice 120# blonde up front to help level things out too - haha - but where could I find one??

I run a 14 1/2 x 17 w/ a 150 hp Mercury (4 blade ss). You might be able to make your boat fly with a different pitch prop.
