150 evenrude 2 stroke
I heard there was a problem with the evenrude engines before Do you know what years they were? I can get a good deal on a 150 2004 evenrude with 400 hours how much is it worth?
|
The FICHT and FICHT RAM engines are normally to be avoided if built by OMC. By 04 they were all built by BRP, and were much better engines, but I would still be gunshy of one myself. Is the engine in question a FICHT RAM or a carbed motor? Most all of the EVINRUDES were FICHT's while the JOHNSON's were normally carbed engines, but there were some exceptions. Most people put a much higher value on the carb motors over the DFI FICHT injection engines due to all of the problems they've had. If it's the carbed engine, it's a good engine(just thirsty), but I would avoid injected ones.
|
So I should stay away? Do you know what years they had the problems with the heads blowing up? I read somewhere they almost went out of business cause of that bad design
|
As was stated above the Ficht motors are very touchy high maintenance motors. I have seen 2 ficht motors that are my buddy's detonate already this summer. And one last year on another buddy boat. I don't trust em
|
I think the year models that give problems were 1935-2017 and beyond
|
I think I will stick with mercurys

When Bombardier bought out OMC, they corrected the issues, and the 03's and on were fine.
They got it right again with the launch of the Etec in 05', excellent from the very first year. Took Mercury years to get the opti max right, and yamaha has had their share of issues -corrosion included. Point being, each have had good and worse motors. I'm reasonably qualified to comment.......I had an 04' Evinrude 200 ficht - ran great till I sold the boat. I now have the first year Etec, an 05 so 12 years old and still runs perfect. Starts instantly to idle as if fully warm every time, runs strong, easy on fuel. Good luck with your search - do multiple source research until a clear picture of each motor / year/ reputation becomes clear. |

its a 13 year old salt water outboard no matter how many hours it has. its a 2 stroke in the new age of 4 strokes. its an evinrude. It has a bad reputation. Like a 30 year old boat, it might be worth owning but not worth buying. It should be so cheap as to not hurt if it takes a crapper... |
Step - might want to talk to Victor at ARG Marine in FLA....561-840-1514.
Long time Evinrude dealer, lots of experience and will be happy to talk to you without bias. Victors a straight shooter. They also sell a LOT of used outboards. I bought from them and I'm a fairly demanding customer.....ref warranty, shipping quality etc. ( never offer the listed price) Good luck whatever you wind up with. Bennett |

Don't know what it's worth, like others said it's a 13 year old saltwater outboard. A good friend of mine has the same year model and horsepower on a 19 Key West and loves it, owned it since new, no problems, just routine maintainence. Of course it's not a four stroke so you'll have to make up for it in some other way. Yeti cooler maybe?

While it was partly meant as a joke.... the reality is that 2 stroke outboards are eventually going to go the way of 2 stroke motorcycles and lawn mowers. I know a lot of guys prefer them and there are power to weight advantages, but the blue smoke sucks! And the four strokes start like a car, every time. And you can troll all day at idle speed with them without gumming up the plugs (and not choke to death). So, resale value on them is necessarily going to be lower. |
Maybe not everyone......
Friend with latest new/used boat with Yami 250hp says he can't wait to get back to 2 stroke ! Misses the get up and go torque. Evinrudes new Etec G2 seems .......amazing.....as best word. Real world feedback of fuel economy 15-20% better than the G1's and even more torque. Plus, way less maintenance than 4 strokes. To each.......there own. I do like to quiet idle/ troll of some 4 stroke motors. |
I think that eventually it's not going to be an issue (or a choice). The laws will change because of the EPA and such to make 4 strokes mandatory. Just like seat belts and other safety items on cars. If you have a car that was made without them you can continue to go that route, but they are mandatory on all the newer cars. And like the mandatory emissions rules, I think outboards are going to hit that same wall. :head:

never worry about oil injection or mixing ratio only change plugs every 2 seasons (even though they don't need it.) everything else is the same as a 2 stroke. No Blue Smoke.....:nut: |
true story, couple seasons ago...
get to dock first light, loading Skunkboat. Beautiful dead silence, pink/blue sky reflecting on glassy marina. I start the zuki....click rrrrrrrrrrrrr then...Guy next to me trying to start OLD carb'ed yamaha...tatatatatatatatata!.....tatatatatatata... ............tatatatatatatatatatata............tata tatatatata...RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRtatatatatrrRRtatatat arRRtatatatatata! Cloud of blue smoke engulfs the marina.... Sorry if I offend but I will be glad when I never have to smell that crap again... |
You just have to love that good old dry exhaust corrosion that Yamaha is standing behind.
|
hehehehe...I guess we highjacked this thread with rants about one side or the other...
there are good & bad yamies, zukis, johnyrudes in both 2 & 4 stroke then there are Mercurys...:nut: and who the hell is paying up for a Honda???? |
Honda? I did not see one reply about the Honda, is that good or bad?

I don't know about that, but I will attest that my Honda 9.9 hp 4 stroke of a few years back is a beast to start. However my pressure washer and my lawn mower are both Honda powered and usually start on the first pull... so who the hell knows... |
Honda's biggest drawback has been there weight. They have been the heaviest outboards because instead of following yamaha's lead and using motorcycle based engine designs, they went and used engines based on there automotive designs. My 75hp I had on my last skiff was a straight up carbed version of a 1.6l Honda civic engine that made 75hp in the civic. So for a 75hp outboard, it weighed as much as a 200hp 2 stroke mercury did at a shade over 400 pounds. And then theres the corrosion issues. Coupled with no dealer network really put them as an after thought.
|
Honda's are the heaviest outboards out there when new, after one season in salt, they are the lightest

Suzuki, Tohatsu, 7 Marine, Force, Mariner, anyone ?
I've had Evinrude, ( carb, DFI, Etec) Mercury, Mariner |

Thats funny Pipe, I think Ive owned 3 Johnsons, a 150, 130, and a 6.
Ive had 5 Mariners Greene, a 40, 30, 15, 4, and a 2. Three of them I got for free, 2 of them at the dump, and all of them ran. The 2 is on the back of my carolina j12 right now. And 3 Tohatsus Phat, a 90, a 15, and a 8. Heres my old 90 for sale again. https://savannah.craigslist.org/bpo/6198068103.html Loudest engine I ever had besides maybe the 350 mercruiser with thru transom exhaust. This will end up being the longest derail thread. |
