Re: This looks like a steal
That is NOT a 20" transom. ::)
|
Re: This looks like a steal
think I saw that 4sale about a week or so after I bought mine the price then was 6500.00,that was back in mid april. Somebody else on the board quoted the seller as saying it was a gas hog and thats why he was selling. It does look like a good deal if everything checks out.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Where does it say it's a 20" transom? 88's are 25" transom boats.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
I don't see any where that it says it is a 20" shaft??
as for being a gas hog, They all are!! Just have to learn how to slow down!! ;D |
Re: This looks like a steal
::)Ok, so maybe I'm seein things ;) I thought that last cigarette tasted funny :o
|
Re: This looks like a steal
225...bet she'll do some scooter-pootin'... 8)...
|
Re: This looks like a steal
My '86 V20 with a 225 Johnson clocks (GPS) at 44MPH, with a clean bottom.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
44 is nice!! But you don't gain to much for the extra horse power??
I have a 175 Yamaha and I can get with a light load about 37 on the GPS and I am always doing 30. I get about 3 mpg and thats about 11 gph what does the 225 get ? Not that it really matters as you can almost never use the power anyway, unless you are on a pond all the time. |
Re: This looks like a steal
Not much else for the extra HP. 225 is on the other side of optimum for a V20. I average 1-2 MPG so it's expensive to use. I am seriously thinking about repowering. My ideal is a 175-200 Yamaha recent used.
I keep checking eBay. I may pick one up this winter. |
Re: This looks like a steal
hate to tell you but you could put 500 hp on the back it won't go a lot faster. A boats hull when designed is made to have so much surface at speed and it's also built to go so fast and they usually won't go alot faster no matter what. My neighbor is a design engineer at Parker and said they make a 18 ft boat that is rated usually for 1 200 hp and it will run 52 MPH and that the coast guard buys the same boats but has them build the boat to hold twin 200's and the 18 ft with twin 200's only ran when tested 54 MPH lol both the 200's were 4 stroke Yamaha's. They tried the same 18 ft too with twin 300 hp Yamaha's and it still only ran 59 MPH all on radar guns too. HP doesn't mean lots of speed.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
In terms of gas usage balanced against speed what ends up being the best optimal motor for the V20? Probably a 2 stroke 175HP?
|
Re: This looks like a steal
4 Stroke is 1000% better over 2 stroke but 175 or 200 either are good motors even a 150 is good. More HP won't work as hard so it can use less fuel under a load.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Agree on the performance benefits of the 4 stroke, when weight is not an issue. I question if it is worth the upcharge.
|
Re: This looks like a steal
My Honda is a GREAT motor, so don't get me wrong, but I'm not convinced that across the board 4-stroke is better than 2-stroke...my old 150 Rude had MORE low-end TORQUE and came outta the hole better than same HP Honda...the 4-stroke will come outta the hole, but you gotta FIREWALL it!! Lotta big advantages to 4-stroke, but hole-shots AIN'T one of 'em... ;) :)...

Re: This looks like a steal
Hey any of you guys running a Johnson 115 hp on a V20, the boat I'm getting from Fillet is on a bracket and it looks like my top speed is going to be about 30mph, which I'm comfortable with but am wondering if that is what the rest of you have seen
|
Re: This looks like a steal
No wind, no top, no load, motor timmed up so high she' suckin' ducks, mine'll get 42 mph on GPS...6000 rpms @ WOT...
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Holy Crap :-[
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Well this was in a mild chop full enclosure and tank and two guys and at 4900 rpm which was the top I was getting with the state of tune and cable adjustment does that sound right or am i missing something
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Yeah, Willy, the chop AND the wind that caused it against the top up (like a sail) would impede top-end, but if ya think there's some tunin' and cable probs...geeterdun...you'll be GLAD you did!!... :D...get it ALL!!
|
Re: This looks like a steal
I'll know more in a week or so RP, I don't need 45mph but would like to step it up a bit from where its at ;)
|
Re: This looks like a steal
'04 Yamaha 150 2 stroke 42mph on GPS @5200 RPM trimmed up suckin' ducks ;D
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Willy, find out what MAXIMUM SAFE RPMS your motor is capable of according to the MANUFACTURER'S SPECS...you may have a PROP issue...the wrong prop can overwork your engine and cause premature wear and too much fuel burn, so it's not just a matter of how fast it goes or ''hole-shot''...get the tune-up and cable issues resolved, find out the MAX RPMS and w/light load and flat water, see what she'll do...if it won't spin up to that number, then try some other props... ;)...let us know how she go... ;D...
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Gotcha ;)
|
Re: This looks like a steal
HEY OZ, IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS I'LL HAVE SOME DATA ON RPM'S VS MPH - HELP ME FIGURE OUT IF I HAVE THE RIGHT PROP ON THE BOAT AS OPPOSED TO WHAT THEY HAD IN STOCK
|
Re: This looks like a steal
Reelepeelin,
What outboard type is more reliable (less prone to breakdowns?) 2 or 4 strokes? How much better are Hondas and Yamahas (recent models) vs Johnsons or Mercs????? I'm still learning. |
Re: This looks like a steal
Boy B93 you sure know how to step in sh*t don't ya, everyone duck here it comes ;D
|
Re: This looks like a steal
yeah for sure Willy nothing like stepping in Poo lol. here's a link to the comments on that issue so far.

Re: This looks like a steal
Boater on that question, we're ALL still learning...every OB mfgr on the planet pops out a LEMON from time to time...of that, I'm SURE ;)...anybody is subject to gettin' one...that said, I honestly believe ALL the major OB mfgrs are turnin' out good, reliable motors these days, after that, it's a matter of findin' a DEALER in your area that you can have some amount of trust in, and will treat you right on the price...I got 3 different dealer's prices before I bought...
Used OBs...I'd find a late model V6 OMC (no FICHT) or Yamaha, compression test, rebuild carbs (whether they need it or not), disconect auto-oiler systems, pre-mix gas/oil and go...don't think Yam CAN disco the auto-oiler...I'm a little on the fence about Merc/used...I know lotta folks love 'em and trust them...I'm just not wild about the SOUND of a Merc and I've SEEN the auto-oilers fail, so if I got one, bye,bye auto-oiler... Like my Honda, but got a hankerin' for a 200 E-Tec...Southern Redneck in me yearning for a little mo ZING... ;D Now that I've pasted all these TARGETS on my back, let the slings and arrows FLY!!! ;) ;D... |
Re: This looks like a steal
FRANCO, for me, the formula for findin' the right prop is this: Take Mfgr's Max Safe RPMS, then prop til ya got one that'll sustain that RPM level w/a light load, calm conditions @ WOT... ;D...
For me that was a little elusive, cause, far as I could find, V20/Honda 150 combo hadn't been tested... ???... For you, my bet is Yamaha has tested the F150 on McKee's hulls and KNOWS the most efficient prop...here's hopin' your dealer got the word...bet he did... IMHO, if a given OB motor won't turn the Mfgr's recommended Max RPMs, it ain't the right prop... ;) ;D...and if a prop allows motor to OVER-REV, it's the wrong prop... :o...better change THAT ONE out, QUICK!! |
Re: This looks like a steal
ive had 2 v20s an 88 with a 150 (original 150) and a 89 with a 130 (just bought brand new yamaha V MAX 150 with the silver cowling aero fin) and the 150 is perfect for a v20

Re: This looks like a steal
I agree Pug ;D
