For V 21 owners -transom modification
4 Attachment(s)
These pics now show " before " ........during........and " after "
I plan to apply an edge guard to the outer transom well, just haven't picked a type of edge yet. Suggestions ? I discarded the original aluminum trim ......it was shot, and I believe a " rubber" type better now. |
BG, I look forward to seeing how the project goes. Good Luck!!!

Bg,if you get a chance, what's the measurement on the deck from the cabin door to the transom. Just courious to see how much bigger the deck area is on a 21 vs a 20.
|
Phat, just measured and it is exactly 11 feet. Probably depends on which model V20, but I'd imagine it is bigger than some and smaller than others. For example I'd bet my old 73 v20 was bigger but not sure.

I don't believe the V21 bigger than the V20........I guess it's just the transom well that makes it 21' I know the floor was lower in the V20, making deeper freeboard. Not sure why Wellcraft raised the floor in the 21. |
Just measured mine,83 v20. It is 9'10" to the front of the splashwell and 10'7" to the back of the cockpit.
|
Time to fill up that oil tank.

Seeing the finished pictures I think you have enough protection from the motor and transom that you may not need a molding.Hard to tell by a picture but was the repair completed with jelcoat or paint?

Greenie, that is an awesome job. I like the way it looks without any trim on it, but protecting the top from things falling on it seems a prudent idea. I'm thinking if I ever do mine that way a layer of white truck bed liner just on the top will look boss and will protect all my hard work. In all cases, that's a really good job. Well done sir, well done.:clap::clap:

Agree about the white truck bed liner.
That your shop/garage? |
Thanks D - followed your lead on the transom inner reinforcement.
The way Wellcraft built it, top of transom well is part of upper cap, and lower part of hull. Now, these sections are joined, seam under the trim eliminated, glassed in so it's all more rigid too. Too bad hp rated for only 200 or we could rig even more power on these transoms ! :) |
Now I' re rigging the pumps, oil tank, battery and such.
I don't work fast.......it's slow going refitting under the tarp - snow or not. |

:beer:looks great.

Thank you
|
I might not make it as a marine engineer......... I work too slow...... still installing all the stuff that goes back into the transom accesses - port and starboard.
Didn't look like a lot of wires and hoses coming out........seems they multiplied going back in ! |
Home stretch.........motor back on, and hours later I have all the pumps, hoses and wires re rigged.
Now doing the easy work, with plan to be fish ready by April 15. Stripers being caught in Del Bay......and gannets reported up and down the beach. It's time !! |

[QUOTE=bgreene;231198]Went to the boat today and got 10'11" but that was with cuddy door closed so likely 11'

Not sure why Wellcraft raised the floor in the 21.[/QUOTE Floor raised due to addition of more foam and self bailing, getting those rear deck drains above the overboard thru-hulls. |
Holy Thread Revival, Batman!
Anyway, yeah I wish the floor was at least an inch or two higher in the V-20, along with the scupper/thru hulls, especially now that heavier 4-stroke engines are replacing the 2-strokes. |
Bringing these threads back from the dead! Ha!
Safety regs gradually became more abundant forcing Wellcraft and others to make changes to their boats. It is a night a day difference between the V-20 and V-21 when you step onboard. Having owned a couple of each now I like the visibility of the V-21 for sure. |
V21 Transom
Very nice design, except for the cap to hull seam where Wellcraft used an ill fitting aluminum strip around the transom well. A common method among boat mfg., but this one on the low end as it tends to have a gap around the curvature. Mine having been redone -eliminating the strip and fusing with solid fiberglass corrected that design flaw, plus had the seam fused and glasses inside the transom too. Dave is fortunate to now have this “ already done “ which is in part why I say “rate it for 300 hp” as I know the transom is stronger than original !! |
Nice looking transom job
They did it? Or did you do it? How much do you think it would cost to do a 78 transom? I hate that aluminum cap they put on top of the transom. What were they thinking. |
I had boat shops do my V21 transom, not me.
|
They did a very nice job. I know you don’t want to put down how much it cost but was it less than 4000? And it was done in New Jersey?
If you dont answer my question I understand |
