Oil in transom

2003 Evinrude 175 burns lots of oil and has some oil collecting in transom

Pic of bilge pump and oil

:head:I'd say your oil tank/tubing is leaking...

X2... Agreed. It's a 2 stroke, no crankcase to hold oil, so it has to be coming from some other place. Most likely the tubing IMHO. :head:

Thanks

That would be a good scenario. It will be out if the water on a trailer in a week. Hopefully that will shed some light.

Is it smoking a lot?
Is it oil injection, does it have a tank you put the oil in More info is needed at this time

Frazer 07-28-2016 10:00 PM

Oil tank under console. Smokes when I take off a pretty good bit, but not while running. Haven't been fishing, but seems like it might smoke more at trolling speed.

THEFERMANATOR 07-29-2016 08:01 AM

Is this a ficht or carbed engine?

steplift20 07-29-2016 08:34 AM

Oil tank is under console but you must have hoses that run to the engine, that the only way I can see why oil is in the bilge, Check the hoses and connection on the engine See w
Hat the heavy hitters reply there good

Ficht

Thank you all for your help. Will keep you posted

THEFERMANATOR 07-29-2016 09:41 PM

FICHT's have 2 oil lines going between the tank and the engine. There's a feed and a return line. Going to have to check them, but if they're original, replace them. You should replace them about every 5 years or so just like fuel lines. As to it smoking, a FICHT engine should be clean pretty much all the time if you're running good oil in it. You are running a DFI oil in it, aren't you? If not, that is a sure fire way to kill one of them engines. Regular TCW3 oil is not up to the task of oiling a DFI engine, and you should really stick with a DFI oil like XD50 or MERCURY's DFI oil for it.

It has had the Evinrude TC-W3 synthetic most of its life. I will definitely try the other.

steplift20 07-30-2016 09:19 PM

Listen to thefermanator he really knows his stuff

Frazer 07-30-2016 09:24 PM

Just ordered some online :)

Also ETECs can be set up to run at 50:1 or 100:1. Don't know about the fichts, but I would want to know what it's set at and run the best possible oil.

FICHT's are strictly 50:1 as brp xd50 and xd100 wasnt around for the FICHT's. OMC thought regular tcw3 was fine, and it was one of the causes of so many FICHT issues. The 150/175 had most of its cylinder failures from carbon buildup from tcw3 oil.

Will hopefully get to run it tomorrow with the XD50. Also the injectors and lines were good. Mechanic determined it was overfilled at some time in the past. The oil had been there/transom a while. Thanks for the help

Frazer 08-21-2016 08:25 PM

So far so good. Ran it for a few hours. It still smokes with the xd50, so I will just leave well enough alone.

THEFERMANATOR 08-22-2016 11:06 AM

With that engines reputation, don't take any chances. I would say have it checked out just to be safe. Also run some ring free in your fuel as carbon buildup will destroy that engine.

Last outing

Smoke was much better last trip. Added some oil last trip and did not overfill. Oil is back. About to get the the hatches worked on, re-gel coated, maybe stain the teak, and will try to get it to a top notch evinrude guy a couple of hours away during the winter. Want to stretch the motor out another year or two for sure. It has run great overall.

steplift20 09-13-2016 05:01 AM

You said , oil is back? Where pooling up in the transom again, is that what you mean?

Frazer 11-19-2016 10:22 AM

Haven't found issue. Relocating tank opposite the batteries under rear stearn hatch.
