Got my first V20, She's a beauty

Found this 1990 Dual Console that has seen little use over it's life. The Black Max had not been run since 2011 and to my surprise it fired right up. Took it out once with the 150 Black Max and love it so far. Paid 3700 and have since sold the Black Max for 1700 to make way for a new 150 Mercury 4 Stroke. Hopefully the 4 stroke will perform just as well or better than the 2 stroke. Thankfully the transom was solid as a rock when I took the Black Max off. I think it was a great deal for a great boat and will hopefully be a red snapper and cobia catching machine.

Nice catch!!!

THEFERMANATOR 04-21-2016 02:42 PM

CONGRATS. Don't see to many of the dually's. The 4 stroke will weigh a bit more, won't have the same grunt out of the hole(a 2 stroke has twice as many power pulses per crank revolution than a 4 stroke, and you're going from a 6 to a 4 cylinder engine to boot), but will probably get close to double the milage. Once you get it propped right, I'm sure you will be VERY happy with it.

Thanks, love the bow on this model, it's huge. I found this while looking to replace my old Chris Craft 211 Scorpion. They're very similar hulls. I'm hoping that after I add some hyrdaulic trim tabs it rides as good as the Chris Craft did. http://s31.postimg.org/oylux55iz/wellcraft5_sm.jpg

smokeonthewater 04-21-2016 04:07 PM

I suspect you'll find that it rides better than the CC

lumberslinger178 04-21-2016 04:26 PM

I bought this boat in Baton Rouge, Louisiana which is where I live. I have personally seen 2 of these models in Louisiana and hundreds of Cuddys. I don't know why they weren't as popular as the Cuddy or CC models as they offer protection from the wind and the nice open bow. I'm looking forward to getting it re-powered and seeing what it can do. I did have to repair the hatch that's over the fuel tank which had rotten wood but that was easily accomplished.

lumberslinger178 04-22-2016 12:48 PM

I repowered in 2007 with the 200 E Tec, and I had hydraulic steering install that same year. Every year I try to do something new as its my only hobby.

captMarty 04-22-2016 01:31 PM

Really nice job on yours, I'm just getting started with mine but it's inspiring to see what can be done. What's your top speed with the etec 200? What about cruising speed?

jjjtronics 04-22-2016 04:54 PM

You are luckyyyyy !!!!!!!!! That hull seems like it was put on a freezer and kept sealed for years !!!!!!! Make sure you check the condition of the hull to upper deck sealant ( the lip or edge ), mine leaked a bt through there and got my clothes wet in the cabin. Other than that, there is no way you can break that boat !!!!!

captMarty 04-22-2016 10:04 PM

The story on this boat is that it was purchased new in 1990 then the owner passed away in 1994. The boat was kept covered and used sparingly since then. I bought it from the owners elderly widow. It needed a good cleaning when I got it but I couldn't be more pleased with how it cleaned up.

lumberslinger178 04-23-2016 06:57 PM

I forget what prop I'm running rite now but its gets to bout 44 - 46 mph and I usually cruise at 32-35
My marine mechanic says I can try out some props he has at the shop to get a little more speed if I want.

captMarty 04-23-2016 08:48 PM

Thanks Lumberslinger, I'm hoping that the 150 4 stroke is going to be enough for mine, time will tell.

phatdaddy 04-24-2016 08:54 AM

I went from a merc 150 2s to the new 150 4s. Actually increased wot by a little- 38mph to 42mph. Hole shot was biggest difference. Hard to describe, but the boat felt more "nimble" with the 2s. Also think the boat rides deeper in the v when on plane with the 4s.

The boat feel like it's in 4wd all the time verses 2wd. Not a bad feel, just different.

While it seems you've found the unicorn 26 year old hull with dry bones, I'd eliminate that trim on the transom and cap with glass, just to eliminate a future issue.

Nice find!!!

captMarty 04-24-2016 06:11 PM

Thanks phatdaddy, good advice on that plastic trim. I noticed that this plastic trim was between the motor and transom before and I see in the installation manual that is not right. I was planning to remove any parts of the trim that might interfere with the new motor.

Here's the original ad that got me to bite, I'm surprised that it's still up:

I have the same boat and absolutely love it. great ride in the chop and it rides very steady in the wind with the trolling motor. Most boats ive been in get blown off course when trying to troll slow speeds (.4 mph) in the wind. Blew up my 175 merc and put a 1998 200 hp ocean pro on it. When I took the old motor off the holes looked like they were just drilled. Transom was solid and dry as can be.

Troutkiller2006 05-26-2016 09:14 PM

you guys are killing me. i want my new to me boat. 88 dually coming hopefully this weekend!
