all honesty needed! mercury(yamaha) 90hp 4 stroke performance
Would you guys put this motor on your v20? My boat will be fished with very little weight most of the time. What kind of numbers would i get? Should i be patient and find another motor? This a pretty good deal on this one.

Yea.......im thinking i agree with you. Guess im trying to hard to find a motor. Everybody keep there eyes out for a motor for me. I will travel to get the right deal!

Theres a few who have 90's on there V's. It will NOT be a speed demon, and most likely have to be pushed pretty hard to just plane out level, but would do it. Propping would be the touchy part since you would be so close to the minumum HP the hull needs to run. Personally I would hold out for a 115 or bigger, but 140+ would be best.

Hold out for bigger. You don't want to go through the expense of buying and the trouble of hanging and rigging to find out it sucks. Ferm is right on the 140 or bigger. I love my 150 for the effiency, but if I did it again I'd save up for a 200 for more speed. I run pretty much lightly loaded as well.

I have a buddy thats hooking me up with leads thats why im asking so many questions lately. Whats your guys opinion on a 2004 yamaha hpdi 150hp? I here some love them and some hate them.

agree with the rest, 140 minimum, not that you have to go fast, but works the engine less at cruising speed.
as far as hpdi's or optis, i think the way they work their magic is by running right on the edge blowing up. as long as everything works, it's golden. when it fails , it;s major. if your looking at 2 stroke, i'd look at at 2000-2004 carbed. great performance and easy mechanics. just fuel mileage sucks. but lets face it 2 mpg vs 4mpg is a 100% increase, but it's still only 4mpg , takes ponies to push a boat and ponies like to eat. |
Its funny because some people say they are flawless and others straight hate them. My buddy that hates them is a 4 stroke man.....and so is all the other guys. I even called all our lical yammy shops and they actually said out of all the HPDI motors yamaha is the best. The motor has less than 400 hours on it and i can get the motor with every thing included for 3500 bucks. Its a 2004. I think thats a heck of a deal. Its in my power range and my price range

kracker, don't know a lot about them (hpdi), but from what i've read and heard, the larger ones were more of an issue.
never heard a lot on the 150's that seems like a good price. i would definitely use the oem oil. is it a 25"? |

If you get the HPDI have the injectors pulled and cleaned/flow tested every 5 years. One lean injector then it's BANG:cry: Keep the fuel clean and the HPDI is a great engine. I have to agree with Phat that a late model carb Yamaha would be the most reliable choice. |

I work on few HPDI's. Like whats been previously said, the bigger engines(250-300) were the ones that give issues. The smaller ones seem to hold up well. But keep in mind, they are exspensive to run. Plugs are $$$ just like any DFI, the $300 high pressure fuel filter is now down to $90 and Yamaha DFI oil is expensive. Savings in fuel get eaten up by oil cost. I think they only offer the 150 HPDI now for the bass boat market. You don't see that many around any more. If you have high pressure fuel pump issues, its big money to have it rebuilt, even bigger to have it replaced, like over $2000 for some models. Like most new engines, they are intolerant of crappy fuel, but HPDIs are even more so. You don't see many getting rebuilt due to the preventative expenses to insure they stay together. Good motors, but its a gamble with high stakes

Yeah, my buddies Suzuki 140 has corroded badly. Just broke two bolts holding the water pump housing, and two holding the foot. Not to mention the corrosion all over the power head.

Well taken care of 6 years of its life was spent on smith mountain lake (fresh water) here in virginia. Im intrested to see wht she looks like up close. He has run in brackish water.....still has salt in it but not as bad as true ocean water. |
Look VERY closely at the lower unit ESPESCIALLY where the prop goes into the gear case. Suzuki's are NOTORIOUS for corroding in the gear case area and splitting where the propshaft support goes in.

I always knew the 2 strokes had this gear case issue...but didnt know the 4 strokes did. The only problem i heard from a guy who is the local suzuki guy said a plug in the mid section is where most of the corrosion stemed from on these 4 stroke. I have seen some frakenstien welding done on a 2 stroke lower!!!!

I have a 2004 and I love it...but... it did have a known problem with corrosion in the exhaust channel where a steel plug is. The replacement "Engine Holder" part does not have the plug, it is solid aluminum. That cost me $1800 incl labor. Recently I replaced all internal engine block anodes. They were due but the block looks fine. You should buy replacements and o-rings before removing the anode covers I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve last year, causing stalling when backing off throttle fast. The codes of flashing lights on the Multigauge pointed me right to the problem. Boats.net has all parts and diagrams. I have a pdf of the service manual. pm me. It is a great motor for the money. It will push your v20 to the mid 30's at wot. 3.5 mpg on 120+ mile round trips at 30 mph. Turn the key after 6 months in a snow covered field- it starts. Love it. |
I dont remember which one of you is from camden county, NC? Ncgarage? Bluerunner? But the motor is on billets bridge road not to far from one of yall.

Well its official. I own a 140 hp suzuki. So i looked at all corrosion spots nothing to write home about the motor was really really clean. I did the hour meter trick with the analog tach gauge by turning the key on but not starting and the needle on the tach will rise to the rpm that shows the hours on the motor for 3 seconds. Meaning if the gauge rises to 3000 rpm the motor has plus or minus 300 hours on it. Well the needle on this motor went to 2500 rpm.....i almost **** my pants so i did it 3 more times and the same thing...2500 rpms so i called my suzuki tech and said this cant be right! 250 hours! On a 2002. He said the hours from the gauge were always rightand corresponded to his computer. He then said congratulations you have officially hit the motor lottery and have found a cream puff! He then said buy it!!! Buy it Immediately!!! Im so stoked right now!!

on the 2004 you gotta count the rev limit light flash because it starts over after 5000
so 1 flash equals 500 hrs, 2 flashes 1000hrs |

Late 90's Evinrude 150 loopers are everywhere,.........put out closer to 165 hp at prop, and are very reliable carb motors. Lots of them for sale, and easy to check the basics including compression.
