Mercruiser Start Up/Marvel's Oil

bought 1986 v with a 2001 Mercruiser 4.3l... harmonic balancer broke,,, boat sat for 2 seasons.. was properly winterized I was told prior to sitting. I replaced balancer got her all back together... now I am ready for next step... Being a rookie , I tried to crank her over .. but nothing .. Starter sounded like it wanted to go , but engine didn't move. My Buddy told me I shouldn't of attempted ... that I should pull plugs and spray marvel's M Oil in each cylinder and let her sit for a week.. then take off belt.. pull plugs and then try to crank over maunually with a breaker bar to break free..... any thouhts... engine has less than 400 on her

THEFERMANATOR 04-12-2015 07:31 PM

When you replaced the balncer, did the engine try to rotate? If not then it is most likely seized up. Pull the plugs out of it, put a ratchet on the crank bolt, and see if it will turn. If it doesn't turn relatively easily, you are seized and should spray some petrating oil or something down into the cylinders, and let it sit for a few days, and spray it again, then see if you can get it to move.

Tunnaman88 04-12-2015 07:37 PM

... no nothing moved.. that is what scares me. I lubed it up good before putting balancer on pressed her on with the install tool.... she didn't spin. Do you think it is possible to free her? The engine wasn't seized when she sat I was Told.. what is the best what is the best way to get it in cylinders?? spray bottle??

smokeonthewater 04-12-2015 08:00 PM

I suggest you put a couple ounces of ATF in each cylinder... Let it set a day or so and then put a socket and breaker bar on the crank.... Don't force it... Just try to get it started moving.... If nothing give it another day or so.
DO NOT try to rotate it... Instead rock it back and forth....

1/4"... Then more more more.... Just a little more each time till it goes a full revolution

Once it goes a full revolution turn it by hand 4 or 5 times ....
Then put a towel over each head to stop ATF spraying out the spark plug holes and hit the starter for a second or so.... Repeat a few times and put the plugs back in.

Turn it one more time by hand, change the oil and then you are ready to start it...

Only crank a few seconds at a time and if it starts kill it within 15 seconds.... Allow to cool and repeat running a few seconds longer each time....

The idea is to polish out the rust without allowing the pistons to warm up and expand untill the bores are clean.

After a dozen run cycles change the oil again and run it till warm....

When you get it in the water treat it just like a new engine break in and change the oil after about 10 hrs run time.

If at any time you notice ticking kill the throttle.... A stuck lifter is an easy fix but it it comes apart things can get worse fast.

Btw a cap from a gear lube bottle will thread onto an ATF bottle... Put a piece of hose on it and u can easily squirt into the cylinder.

If I had a dollar for everytime somebody said something was good last time they ran it, and it ended up being bad. I felt bad for the guy my neighbor bought his boat from. He had recipts for almost $4K worth the work, and none of it was done. Part of the bill was to winterize the engines, which was not done, and one engine was actually put up with water in it. He got lucky and we got that engine freed up, and it is a good engine now. NEVER trust a seller, NEVER! Even if it is a friend, I never trust a seller anymore and always plan for the worst.

Tunnaman88 04-13-2015 02:38 AM

Wow... great advice!!!! I will start that process tonight when I get home! Great detail!!! I take it you are a pro? ATF works better than Marvels? I like the gear lube trick, I will stop by HD and grab some tubing and make it happen. I think I have $4k into the boat for trailer repairs, electronics, lightin seats and rod lockers before I knew it ran.... there is no turning back now.....

Tunnaman88 04-13-2015 03:08 AM

rookie question.. but to crank over by hand,, do I need to take balancer off to get to bolt? or ??

THEFERMANATOR 04-13-2015 09:04 AM

Use a 5/8" socket on the balancer bolt to try and rotate. Don't try and turn it to hard though as the crank bolt can snap.

smokeonthewater 04-13-2015 10:06 AM

The bolt is the same one that holds the balancer on...
There is also a special socket you can buy that slides onto the crank instead of the balancer and allows you to USA a lot more force if needed but we are hoping lots of force won't be needed.

No I'm not professional just have a lot of years of working on old junk....

ATF is incredible stuff.... Coats well, penetrates well, and cleans well.

went to go pulled the plugs last night and they seemed pretty rusted in , so I soaked with DB Blaster and will try tomorrow. There seamed to be rust comin from exhaust manifold gasket which doesn't seem right? any thoughts

thats about normal

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 09:49 AM

That is 't rust 'coming from' the gasket... That is rust wherever there isn't paint...yep normal.

bradford 04-14-2015 10:44 AM

Looks brand new compared to a lot of crap I deal with lol.

word

Tunnaman88 04-14-2015 12:42 PM

Looks normal? The engine itself looks brand new... minor flaking on the underside... there was a nest of mices in the boat so they chewed things here and there... I read one article about a mouse getting inside the engine through the exhaust and causing rust from its urine to seize the engine... ever hear of that??

So the exhaust manifold looks ok?? I was about to order new gaskets..

I ordered that socket that you guys had the link to summit racing.. I hope it was the right one...1/2"?

I will take some more pix and post...

between electronics , rod lockers , lights new custom seat and complete trailer rebuild.. I am 6 months $4500k into this and there is no turning back... this motha effer is going to run one way or the other !!!....

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 02:53 PM

1/2" is the size of ratchet or breaker bar that fits it... If it was the sbc socket then it will work.

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 02:55 PM

Don't worry about mice... Just get oil in there and work it back and forth

Tunnaman88 04-14-2015 03:34 PM

I purchased the one smokeonthewater said to http://m.summitracing.com/parts/pro-...FQwvaQodUj0AeQ

I put trust into you guys, so I just ordered it in the effort to move forward... cylinders should be nice and lubed by the time summit ships it out...I have to get a puller to take off the Balancer too.... thinkin about the cheapo puller kit at harbor freight? ... will it work?

http://www.harborfreight.com/bolt-ty...set-69889.html

going out to work on the pig now

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 03:39 PM

Go to Oriley or autozone... You can rent one for free.... You pay a deposit and then get the deposit back when you return the tool.

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 03:40 PM

Yeah that's the one... You're GTG

Tunnaman88 04-14-2015 06:43 PM

It only cost $28.00 shipped... it would cost almost that in gas and of McD's while Im out! LOL

Attachment 5982

Attachment 5983Got out there and the freed up nicely.. was able to pull all the plugs one at a time and load them up with tranny fluid.. here is a laugh..
I used a ball primer to get the oil into the cylinders, the second one I did was #3.. I pumped and pumped and it didn't take much.. I pulled the hose away and tranny fluid shot out like a musket gun and got me right in the eye!! LOL... effin rookie!!! I did notice that # 3 #4 ? the two middle ones ... the pugs were real funky.. some sort of green mold growin on them.. any thoughts?? I plan on letting this sit until Saturday before trying to budge it.. that will give it 4 days.. for the most part..engine looks pretty new/clean

THEFERMANATOR 04-14-2015 08:00 PM

That would be corrosion. The plug electrodes are made of copper, and copper corrodes green when wet.

Tunnaman88 04-14-2015 08:11 PM

do you think water in cylinder? That is why it is seized? or just age/condensation?

smokeonthewater 04-14-2015 08:30 PM

We have no way to know.... First step is free it up... THEN we find out if there are other issues.

HOPEFULLY just a little condensation.... And HOPEFULLY it breaks free surprisingly easily with minimal rust.

Tunnaman88 04-18-2015 05:20 PM

,,great news.. it freed up!!! took all advice and it worked!!!! .... bum news ... starter bad! better replace starter over engine!!! ....... I emptied 35 gallons of old gas today.. still 5-10 left.. ard to get rest out... tinkin of leaving and adding new gas.. octane boost.. tougts? I will order starter today and continue next week end

smokeonthewater 04-18-2015 05:44 PM

NO WAY NO HOW NO....

200 gallons of good gas plus 10 gallons of bad gas equals 210 gallons of bad gas...

get rid of ALL of it.

That said awesome that she's free now.... hopefully your good luck continues

steplift20 04-18-2015 06:07 PM

I'm just reading all your replays I will tell you ,,,,,,, you guys are frigging amazing,,, I wish I lived closed to any of you guys Friggin amazing

Tunnaman88 04-18-2015 07:05 PM

210 gallons bad gas... ill will rid rest, not sure ow? need a siphon of sort? I used garden ose...went trew sending unit.. use a wet dry vac for suction.. extinguisher close by :-). wat do u use to empty tank?.. can u tell tere is one key on board not working?

Tunnaman88 04-18-2015 07:08 PM

need to order starter, and some sort of oil pressure/sending tingy? it is to te rit of engine looks like fuel filter...

smokeonthewater 04-18-2015 07:11 PM

I use a cheapo electric fuel pump and enough fuel hose to reach the can outside the boat... jack up one side of trailer or pull onto a block or ramp and then raise or lower tongue to make gas run to a corner.

then pump or siphon from there... NO shop vac.... can you say BOOM.

use 3/8 fuel hose n either pump or siphon... hint: you can run it through the bilge drain in the transom if it's long enough

if it looks like a fuel filter it's probably the fuel filter?

post a pic

Tunnaman88 04-18-2015 09:07 PM

looks like it is te oil pressure switc?

smokeonthewater 04-18-2015 09:19 PM

Was just thinking.... Maybe it wasn't really seized in the first place.... Maybe the starter was the whole problem???
