Truck Guys - Tire Question

I gotta replace my tires here sometime and was lookin at the Mickey T's Baja MTZ's in a 285. I know Mickeys are nice and by comparison if they are only $40/ea more than BF's I might go in that direction.

Anyone have any experience with em? Are they loud on the road? Do they hold up well compared to the BF All Terrains?

ssiredfish 10-05-2014 10:50 AM

nuthin?

I think the Mickey T's are a soft compound, if you are highway driving, I'd go another way, if you spend a majority of your time off road, they may be the ticket. Everyone raves about the Nitto's being the best tire, we joke about them being the choice of "mall crawlers" everywhere. I'm running Michilens on all our vehicles(except for the dually) and have had great luck with them. That being said, the most off road any of them are doing is a gravel drive way. I just put two Firestones on the Dually(E rated LT235/85 16) If I knew I would be driving it more, I would have put Michelins on it, but I think they will dry rot before I get any mileage out of them. BFG all terains were always one of my favorites, they look good, ride great, quite adn seem to last. Of course its been 15 years since I had a set

I have never considered mickey thompson tires to be anything special.... wear fast on road and not aggressive enough off road..

Imho Michelin makes the best longest lasting tires for general purpose and heavy duty use driving primarily on the road..... for dual purpose BFG (I have 255/85r16E BFG MT's on my dually which sees a lot of heavy towing and a lot of muddy pipeline right of way) are my choice and for mostly off road Interco all the way.

Nitto... The only thing the do better than their competition IMHO is reduce weight in your rear pocket.

For performance I have Kumho's on my BMW and have been VERY happy with them even tho they seem to wear a little fast.

I have approx 40,000 miles on my Yokohama tires on my truck. They have plenty of life left in them and they actually work well on the beach and even in the mud.

X2. I have them on my Durango and love them. Smooth riding all season radials with no noise. Also gotta agree with SpareParts about Michilens. My wife just put a new set on her Honda Accord. Her old set was starting to show wear with 75K on them (All on-road). .

ssiredfish 10-06-2014 07:19 AM

Thanks guys. I have Mich's on there now and while I will agree they are great on the road they absolutely suck when I get on my huntin lease. The first little bit of mud and they are caked up and start spinning. Thats to be expected from what they call a M/S tire that has the aggressiveness of a field mouse.

I gotta find a better tire to get me through the nastier stuff.....

What kind of Yoko's do yall have

i've got yoko geolanders on the tahoe, probably not too good in the mud, but great in the fl sand. so far, have not got stuck between house and mall or Home Depot.

captpete13 10-06-2014 06:21 PM

I have the geolander ATS. They are all terrain tires in a 315 70-17 size. My next set will be the mud terrain which I think is the MT+ in a 37" or 38".

spareparts 10-06-2014 08:00 PM

if you can run 37's check with these guys, http://www.militaryoffroadtires.net/aboutus.asp

they're in Dawsonville, Ga

bradford 10-07-2014 01:42 AM

I've always been a BFG guy. Around here it seems the Jeep guys run MTs some, but never see them on trucks.

Stuck with 2WD pavement princess running on the back of those field mice They changed the compound, don't last 80,000 anymore.

Stinky_Hooker 10-07-2014 03:54 PM

By Goodrich tires aren't whatthey used to be. TThat's why I went with coopers. The bfgs I had before these wore fast. And they were the heavy KOs "E" load range.

bradford 10-07-2014 07:48 PM

I got 70,000 on a set of BFG Commercial T/As on my old C1500. Running "E" rated Firestone Transforces on the C2500 and K1500 now, seem to wear like iron, but not a mud tire. Great for carrying a load. Got BFG All Terrains on the 4Runner and they are doing good, but it doesn't weigh much. For what it's worth every tire that I've had belt separation on was a Michelin. Maybe because they were so old. My Mom has had great luck with Bridgestone Duelers on her K2500. Good on the highway and off road pulling horse trailers.

ssiredfish 10-08-2014 10:15 PM

Bradford I was also lookin at those Firestone Destroyers....Always heard good about em but never had a set

I run Michellin A/T on my Tacoma and two Forerunners and have had great service with them. I dont put it in the mud but they do well in the beach sand. My son had big Mickey T's on his Tacoma, they looked good but didn't last anytime. My son inlaw just bought Toyo tires for his Tundra and he loves them.

Nitto Grapplers are pretty fair in Florida sand. Run out good.
Fit a delivery truck with them and so far they have done well. Most jobsites in Florida don't have a lot of mud, so...
