Tahoe/Burb guys give me some MPG figures
Im not expecting 18MPG, hell 14 would be nice. But after the lift and 33" tires the Hoe is getting 10-11. MAYBE 11.5-12 on the interstate after my last fill up to the hunting camp. For the most part it doesnt bother me, its a big truck and holds everything I need it to in comfort. I only drive to and from work 8 miles round trip but hunting season is going to kill me. I also have about 5-600LBS of tools and winch in the back. Im thinking of trying to lighten it up some but not sure how much it will really help? All maintenance up to date and not throwing any engine codes. I keep it checked as I have a reader.
I think mostly its the 3.42s in the axles that are killing it, it has to shift alot on hills. |
33's and 3.42's with a 4L60E's 30% overdrive is killing your milage. You need a set of 4.10's at leats for that size of tire. Most all stock trucks with 265's(31's) got 3.73's. Most all of the 3.42 trucks got 245's(30's). 12-14 would be good if you drive it conservatively. And just because the engine light isn't on, doesn't mean it is up to snuff. ONLY run AC DELCO platinum's or iridum plugs, good 7 or 8 MM plug wires, the blue marine grade cap and rotor, and the updated MPI conversion set for the injectors is another good investment since the stock poppets were crap even new.

I updated the spider when I rebuilt it. Its been a little while on plugs/wires so I may do them soon Ferm, thanks.
I drive like a grandpaw, my wife makes fun of me for it. |
If you are interested. I've got an external injector mpi set up for sale. You'll need a wiring adaptor and some one to put a tune on it to take advantage of the setup

Ive got an 05' 2500HD 6.0L and Im about where you are w/o the lift and 285's.
I checked it this morning. Avg of 10.8 so yea it sucks and I drive about like you do. Pullin the Wellcraft I get 8.9.....Did I win????? |
With those gears and tires I would avoid using O/D

i've got a 02 tahoe 4wd w/ 5.3. pure stock with 265/70 16's yokohama geolanders 185,000 miles.. i just got back from a trip to st pete, all interstate. got 18 mpg keeping it at 75 , 2000 rpm. around town i get 14. we only use it for road trips and launching the boat. trailering to the keys, i got 11 mpg at 65, in trailer mode.

2000 Suburban (1500 4WD) averages 15-16 mpg, no matter how I drive it, except when pulling a heavy trailer or boat it drops a few. Stock size tires, though. It has 267,000 miles on it and it's still going strong.
Have you recalibrated your mpg taking into account the increase in distance traveled per revolution of your tire? You know how the speedo is affected, registering slower than your actual speed, the odometer is similarly affected. |

Or just deal with what you have. |
My speedo is actually correct with the tires. It was always off with 245s, then got a little closer with 265s and is right on with the 285's. Its strange, thats chevy quality control for you I guess. Ive checked it with 2 different GPS's.
I do run it with OD off (in 3rd gear) when Im around the hunting property with all the hills and such. Pretty flat land where I live it. I still run it off occasionally, it definately feels like it "should" then. The overdrive is relatively useless in this truck with the current setup. |
