Nice video, great conditions. Is your camera on a fixed mount?

charlie_the_tuna 07-10-2014 09:45 AM

I got sound. no video.

phatdaddy 07-10-2014 12:58 PM

pipe, it's on a clamp mount. i had it clamped on the top of the windshield just to the right of the cabin door. i was surprised at how steady it was. i went and got a double battery pack to get some more time out of it. we went out in the gulf and trolled up a couple of large spanish. i thought i was filming, but the battery had already died.

they need to give you the camera, just to get you hooked on the extra stuff you end up buying,

sorry charlie, pushing the limits of my tech know-how to get this far.

I've been surfing Amazon looking at them. Trying to figure out which "package" deal is actually the best deal. Like you say, the camera is just a means of getting you to buy all the extras. I was worried about battery life. Guess I should get 2 extra?

Did you get the "Black" edition? Did you get the display attachment and the remote?

Going to Italy soon with the wife & kid, so I have a non-fishing justification for getting the boss to agree to it...

By the way, in NJ that 10 minute ride would have been half NO WAKE ZONE and taken 45 minutes

phatdaddy 07-10-2014 10:16 PM

skunk, i got the hero 3+ silver edition. i think the only difference is the remote and maybe the frames per second settings. i bought the additional batpac today ($45) that doubles the record time to about 4 hours. also if you have the wi fi enabled on the camera it sucks battery life.
i had looked at them, but was not really interested. then i took a friend who works for a tv station out fishing. he brought along a contour (similar to the go pro) and just lashed it to the bimini top rails. he just let it roll as we fished. got some great shots casting to and landing some mahi mahi and then some dolphin(flipper type) came up. he grabbed the camera and lashed it to the gaff and stuck it under water and got some great shots of the dolphin. my wife saw the videos and said we have to get one of those. mentioned it to my daughter and she said we have a promotion at work and can get 40% off retail.
as they say, the rest is history...

really wish i had something like this when the kids were little and we were able to do the keys trips more frequently

Now you have to spend hours in the middle of the night editing, adding sound & stills and making movies...

Sometimes you wonder if the camera just gets in the way but it pays off years later. My dad had a state of the art 8mm movie camera in 1968. We have movies of the family that are just priceless now. Converted them to digital.

I bought a state of the art digital 8mm tape camera when my daughter was born. Now all that is in file form on my computer and that camera is a relic. ...and three computers are relics...

I've been using a cheap Fuji waterproof camera on the boat but lately the shutter button sticks and I miss the shot.

yea we are slaves to technology.

as far as editing, my son is a video editor at the local tv station, so thats his job.

Yet another reason why I like to launch in the Hackensack and get to Sandy Hook that way. Only a few areas where I have to slow down. Going under bridges and such... But yes, I have to agree on the shore and No Wake Zones. When I lived in Toms River and launched in Forked River near the state marina it was at least a 15-20 minute run in no wake zones

phatdaddy 07-11-2014 07:39 PM

its about 7 miles from where i launch to the gulf. the first 5-6 hundred yards is a no wake zone because there's a boat yard there, after that, let her rip. mercury test facility is located on the same bayou. they run everything under the sun out of there. not uncommon to see them running 50 -60 mph in the bay .

hope u enjoy the camera, skunk. which one did you get?

SkunkBoat 07-11-2014 08:18 PM

getting the Black edition with a bunch of stuff, 2 extra batteries, 64gb card, some tripod//grippy stands.
I'm sure I'll need more ways to mount it and maybe a head or chest mount.
Didn't order the lcd screen but will probably need it. In Italy I'll have to watch what I did and delete junk or I'll run out of space on the cards.
Is it easy to connect to phone using bluetooth and see what you are taking?

phatdaddy 07-12-2014 07:57 AM

it seems to be pretty easy with an ipad & iphone. my phone is android platform and it seems to struggle, might be the phones fault, not the app. works good on my ipad . the great thing about digital is shoot all you want and throw away the bad stuff. my son dabbled with the editing software and said it's not bad at all for free.
as stated, i have only had this one since tuesday, so i am still a newbie and i am a technology challenged, so please let me know any tricks and tips you discover.

I can't get over how stable the video is. That was pretty cool.
