Pirogue build thread

Well here is the little pirogue Im building for those that havent seen it on Facebook. As stated before I just wanted something to fool around in some ponds and wanted something light. The main goal here was something durable with as little weight as possible. This isnt a show piece at all so it wont get a whole lot of fairing, sanding and finish work.

Started out with a few sheets of cheap luan. Its getting glassed and completely sealed so the wood is just a basis for forming what I need.

Started with 11" sides and scarfed them together by routing out 3" on each section:

Let cure overnight. All set with Gorilla glue, its good stuff:

Bow stems cut, several inches too long and a 19 degree angle:

Ends cut, I went roungly 12.5' overall length:

Bow stems installed:

I failed to take more pics of the process. All that was really done is getting measurements and angle and setting up the three ribs to dry overnight. Once dried I installed them with glue and clamped in place with a few brads and screws.

Flipped it and skinned the bottom:

After some cleanup its starting to take shape:

Next was to skim it in thin glass for "waterproofedness" as well as durability.

Then I flipped it back over to work on the rub rails and typing it all together. Prior to this is was feeling pretty stout (and still extremely light) but this REALLY stiffened things up.

I had one small section of glass give from the rub rail pressure and clamping but Ill grind it out and fix it. I heard it cracking but kept pulling because I wanted straight.

As of yesterday, one side done the other setting:

Hopefully Ill get a little more time this week. More to come.

just crack me up, Beautifull job !!!

Stinky_Hooker 06-25-2014 08:29 AM

Havent been able to fool with it yet this week, hopefully today I can fool with it some. I got the inside seams on one side and the front/back glasses, still have part of one side to do.

I just spoke with my marine paint guy Ive used for many years. Going with an international Epoxy primer Ive used before. He said it should seal it inside and out water tight.

Stinky_Hooker 06-26-2014 07:20 AM

just got a chance yesterday to fool with it. I havent been out there since Sunday when I let the rub rails sit up. Got the other ribs trimmed down and installed the bracing and plywood for the small bow cap. The rear one will only be 8" or so long, even smaller. Also got the paint...ouch. The inside corner on the glassing is done as well.

Got it from Stauter boat works here, I was going with some different primer but he had some good stuff there so I went ahead with it.

Stinky_Hooker 06-26-2014 07:34 AM

I also couldn't stand it and prepped a small area for primer yesterday. This is some good stuff for sure. Coats great, dries fast.

As you can see from the pic theres about 150# of paint buckets in there holding some wood to dry. She didnt flex a bit.

Destroyer 06-26-2014 10:27 PM

Can ANYONE tell me WHY paint has suddenly gotten so damn expensive?? I mean, WTF??? I'm prepping to paint my house right now, and just the cost of the paint is what I used to pay for painters to come in and paint the whole house!!! OMG!! WTF is going on? $70 for a gallon of house paint???

bradford 06-27-2014 08:04 AM

Looks great Stink!

Thanks for not modeling the "Jack Tar".

Destroyer you know the answer.

Stinky_Hooker 06-27-2014 09:59 AM

Destroyer, I dont know what kinda paint your buying but I can get good stuff here for 120-150 for 5 gallons...gallons run 35-40.This is good exterior BLP or Valspar house paint. I go through tons of it at works.

As far as the boat...

No updated pic cause I just worked on some fairing yesterday but I did get a chance to weigh it. 40.5 lbs. I did the bathroom scale trick (with and without holding it). As it sits right now Ive got about 1-2lbs of materials left to add at MOST. Im pretty happy with that! I was hoping 30-35lbs but Im not far "over budget".

Stinky_Hooker 06-29-2014 09:05 PM

It's done! Wooohooooo

Excellent work again, and damn fast too. I just vacation for a week and voila. A boat from scratch..

tsubaki 06-30-2014 04:11 PM

charlie_the_tuna 07-02-2014 09:28 AM

so, I guess you gotta go pole that thing down the bayou now.

Destroyer 07-02-2014 12:11 PM

While I'd really like to see pics of her in the water, asking Stink to send pics is like sitting on top of a 2000 lb bomb and hitting the tip with a hammer. You just know that you're not going to like the result. :you:

Stinky_Hooker 07-03-2014 12:54 PM

Been a crazy busy week and gonna be a long weekend of fishing. Got a buddy coming in from out of town to stay with me and try out salt water so Ill be busy deck handing for him. May not get to wet the Oar till sunday-mondayish. Will report back with pictures/video ASAP

tsubaki 07-03-2014 04:01 PM

What you got in mind for the paddle situation?
A couple of 3' paddles, a narrow 4' one, push pole or maybe a kayak paddle?

Stinky_Hooker 07-06-2014 09:01 PM

Took my daughter fishing in it today. We caught some bass and then she took some solo pics for me. It done great. Very stable.
