V21 transom project
 

As I posted before I had sold this boat to my son and was looking forward to still using it once in a while. My son pulled off the trim at the top of the transom and the picture below shows what he found. I am taking the boat back. Any one interested in a V21 transom rebuild project? This is more than I want to take on. The picture shows the area near the engine but the core wet further outboard to. I plan to keep the Honda 150 engine to put on another boat, but would like to get rid of the hull and trailer. I will consider parting out the hull if I can't sell or trade the entire boat. Anyone interested in buying a project? Any one know of a good center console orcuddy hull in need of a good motor?

Just thinking out loud, but could you shave off the "bracket", construct a full transom and bolt on an Armstrong bracket? Sounds like a lot of work, but if you like the boat it might be worth it.

Lots of good parts on that one and I'm partial to the mid 80's for a couple reasons. The fact that she has already been somewhat stripped of parts, has the usual screw holes in the transom, and even more that somebody didn't care enough to at least throw some wood blocks under her when they dragged her off the trailer would throw up red flags for me. Not to mention the price.

I'll bet if you shopped around $1000 might get you close in materials.

Could you take everything off the transom, seal it up good and pour Arajay?

might want to get up with destroyer, i think he had some pretty good intel on exactly whats in the make up of the bracket. if the core around the bolt holes is sound, might can dig out rot from top and repour, then glass.

If you want to buy yourself a few years on it for cheap. Remove the engine, drill some 1/4" holes in it all the way down through the wood(not through the glass) about every 2-3 inches, and fill it with kwik-poly. I've used this stuff before, and it will turn that rotted wood into some solid stuff. it is a penetrating polyurathane epoxy. The rotted wood will basically act as a filler for the epoxy to thicken it and reduce the required amount. And if your current boa is in good shape except for the transom, then I would fix it. There are to many rotted boats out there being pawned off as good to roll the dice IMO.

Bradford, I agree the boat in Chincoteague is overpriced for what it appears to be. I guess it really doesn't make sense. Most likely I'd end up with another hull that needs fixing. Converting to a bracket seems like as much work as fixing what is already there.

Ferm, Have you tried the kwik poly in wood that is still wet?

It's best to let it dry out some if possible. I have used it on wet wood, and it doesn't work nearly as good. Open it up, drill the holes, and put a halogen work light on it for a few hours a day to dry it out. In a week or twos time you can get most of the moisture out of it.

some wood bits with extensions, a shop vac, $400 bucks of Arjay, some glass, gel coat, and a weekend you will be back in business. Those v21s look easier to deal with than the v20s

A good price I think for a great motor and a good trailer.

If the transom doesn't give when you push down on the motor, it may be sound enough for more of a minor repair.

I stood on the motor and jumped up and down. The transom still seems solid. I drilled a hole near the bottom of the bracket portion of the transom, the wood is dark in color indicating that the rot has begun and water runs out of the hole. Further outboard beyond the bracket on the port side, the wood is still light in color, but it is wet. Ultimately the entire transom needs to be done. I have not done this type of repair before although with the experience on this forum I'm sure I could get it done. What I really lack is the time and the desire to do it. I think I will be able to get the most for the boat by parting it out. I am expecting a buyer tommorrow morning to pick up the Honda 150 motor and controls. He is also buying the seats.

I am taking offers on the boat and trailer as is without the motor.

On a completely different subject. There was a time when we were practically neighbors. I grew up in a house just off Lloyd Rd between 79 and 34. Being in Morganville, I'm sure you know right where that is.

Yup! Sure do. I live on Beacon Hill rd, just off 79. The house with a nice v21 sitting in my driveway.

It's a shame you have to part your boat out. You'll definitely make more money parting it out, as much as it sucks. When my boat was totaled in Sandy I kept it. They knocked $200 off my total amount I was able to save everything off the boat except the radar arch and hull, even pumped 30 gal of gas into my truck. It was well worth keeping it. Good luck with the sale. I have some interest in the washdown pump.

Go Bgreene! save her! Thats a true wellcraftv20.com boat. In fact, those cabin cushions were actually from my V21. I gave them to Parrot free of charge since I wasn't using them and he was looking for them. And I thought they were really ugly. I don't want them back, just noting that the boat has history here.

Bought the transom doors from RB437 and it solved my need for the latch.

Sold the boat last night to gentleman who lives just a couple of miles away. He seemed both eager and capable of getting this boat fixed and back on the water soon. I mentioned the forums to him. He said something about a cult. I'm sure everyone is curious to see a V21 transom rebuild so hopefully he stop by here for a little "Kool-Aid" and post up some pictures of the repairs.

My only regret is he lives close by. I fully expect one day to see her go cruising by me. I know I will be a little jealous, but that's the choice I made. Best of luck to the new owners. I have no doubt that in the right hands, there are quite a few more years of enjoyment left in that boat.
