unpleasantness at the boat ramp...........

so my 11 year old and I were at the ramp after some yak fishing. we have a double wide ramp with dock on one side. I always use the side without the dock so as not to be in anybodys way.
don't know if you guys are into it but there is a huge offshore boat race off our beach this weekend. so our kayaks are tied to the ramp and my truck is at the top of the ramp where we will carry the yaks and place them on top of the truck. so we're there getting ready and one of these racing boats pulls in to the dock side of the ramp and as we're unloading stuff from the yaks to the truck one of the crew says to me "you need to move your truck so we can get the trailer in here". I politely reply "i'll be two minutes and i'll get out of your way". the guy looks at me and says "NOW"! I said "what"? he goes "NOW"! so I walk over and quietly, so my boy doesn't hear us, said "i'm going to give you some valuable advice, so listen carefully"..... my dad always told me you get more flies with sugar then you do with sh!t". also, you don't know me but those who do, know what I am capable of so i'm going to politely and quietly tell you once and only once..... speak to me with respect or this will end very, very badly for both of us". with that the guy goes and tells a couple of his other crew members, they all look over at me and I guess they just decided I was not one to be messed with.
a few facts about me that you guys don't know. i'm 5'10" and weigh 275 lbs. i'm a former new York state champion wrestler and qualified for the Olympics. I am a former new York daily news golden gloves heavyweight boxer, a former college football player and I've had many, many street fights. not saying this to toot my own horn but you never know who you're talking to. I would never speak to anybody like that, let alone a complete stranger.
I've never trailered a boat and maybe I don't know propper ramp etiquete but this didn't seem like it to me.

His father should have beat him more! Guy's like you is why I work on karma. Treat everyone the same and life is good if not you might have some silverback messing you up.

chumbucket 08-25-2013 10:58 PM

You did right Chuck. I'd have told him to go sh!t in his hat.

RidgeRunner 08-26-2013 08:16 AM

Good for you. Nothing worse than running into a Turd at the boat ramp. They were probably in a panic, late to the party, and some folks don't react well to crisis. I give most folks a wide berth, not much of a street fighter. The fact that you were there first and they need to wait their turn does come to mind, I would argue that point but I ain't going to jail over it. No matter how mouthy they got. I would go about the business of the day and then politely ask them if they knew what the letters FO represented..
I suspect that at least some of those nice folks are members on S&F,OSO, and THT. It would be interesting to know who they are.

roffey 08-26-2013 08:33 AM

I have always waited for my turn at the boat ramp. When boating I normally have all day and rushing makes you make mistakes....

Out on the water yesterday I had a bass boat pass me, he slowed down to yell at me to move over,,, LOL. Some people just are not boaters.

X2 You handled it perfectly, especially in front of your son. About the only other way to handle it is to simply ignore him and keep on doing what you were doing in the first place. If there is going to be a fight, let him start it... (Defending yourself works much better in the eyes of the law).

charlie_the_tuna 08-26-2013 10:52 PM

thanks guys. y'know, i'm trying to raise my boys in a nonviolent manner. of course I don't want them to be walked all over but at my age I rarely if ever even consider street fighting anymore. I do stand up for what I believe and if it came down to it I would kill for my family. that said, if I never have to raise my hands in anger again, that'll be just fine with me. knowing what I know and being who I am, I never speak to people like this jacka$$ spoke to me. I am one who believes in 'do unto others as you would have others do unto you'.
cant we all just get along??

smokeonthewater 08-26-2013 11:22 PM

I know just what you mean.... BTW 20 points to anyone who knows where my last comment came from

macojoe 08-27-2013 11:38 AM

You did good upchuck!! I use to also be one mean person, I have had tons of street fights and bar room brawls! But unlike you I had always learned that I must strike fast and hard, because I was not letting the get the upper hand!
That has gotten me in some battles that other wise would not have happened. O well, as I got older and bigger my size did all the talking, at 6'1" 300+ i was a mean guy!
I have not fought in years now and hope I will never cause I am going to be dead! Thats what I have a son for, he is a bouncer at a night club here and he is 6'3" 300+ and meaner then I ever was! I have had my near murders at the ramp before and on the water!! Some people just suck!

ssiredfish 08-28-2013 12:26 PM

Shame on you guys... Adam Sandler movies rock... Funny as hell!

macojoe 08-28-2013 04:38 PM

Never saw it and not trying to!

bgreene 08-28-2013 07:42 PM

OOH this is good.....

Ok, so at the big Keyport, NJ Municipal ramp, coming in on my V21 with my son.

One boat ahead of us, guy is trying to power drive his boat up onto his bunk trailer.
Well, he keeps missing, left, then right, and losing his temper.

My son and I are standing on the dock, next to our boat.
I say to my son ( 19) " watch -this is how a grown man should NOT behave"

The guy reverses his boat again and again, each time running and gunning.
He screams at his friend who apparently made a suggestion.
Finally rams his boat onto the trailer, and pulls up.

Lessons for my son:
1. Don't lose control
2. When dealing with a problem....slow down.....take your time, be careful.

Guy last week told me I should use the right side of a ramp because it was available.
( tide running hard - no good )
I said no thanks, I'll wait..........and he walked away angry, muttering, spitting in the street.

Boat ramp on a busy day - lot's of interesting behavior.

randlemanboater 08-28-2013 08:53 PM

Good job CTT, you handled that perfectly in front of your boy, proud of you.

Some folks have no couth.

Hmmm... Not a big fan of Mr Sandler......although I did find his movies Mr. Deeds and Happy Gilmore entertaining. (At least he's not as bad as Will Ferrell, so I guess that's something).

smokeonthewater 08-29-2013 01:12 AM

We can agree on that one! Oh how I hate Will Ferrel........ would GLADLY give up Sandler if it meant Ferrel would go with him!

Btw Had my own ramp story from the other day... was backing my jetskis between one of thos gofast boats and the dock.. it was just a little tight but not bad... still had a few feet between us but the guy's kid, maybe 19 comes running up yelling STOP STOP... HEY STOP!!! HEY HEY STOP!!!!!..... He was FRANTIC, looking at my trailer and daddy's boat and even started to get a mean tone in his voice... I was in my Jeep with the window down and I just kept slowly backing down the ramp and said "calm down junior, it'll be OK" with a gentle tone...... I got back to the water and got out.... Daddy was looking at me with just a hint of stinkeye, so I said with a smile "I think I scared your boy there, he seemed pretty excited" The whole mood changed and daddy started laughing and said "yeah he got worked up a bit. BTW I'm 6'4" 235 lbs myself... Not golden gloves or anything but not exactly a pushover either...

So it's not just me? I never understood his fan draw. The first time I same him was when he did that cheer-leading skit on SNL. That turned me off for good.

RidgeRunner 08-29-2013 12:08 PM

FYI- I redeemed my points earlier and got 4 brand spanking new radials for the trailer. Thanks Smoke.:zip::laugh::party:
I like Adam Sandler's works- Weding Singer, 50 First Dates, Grown Ups 1 & 2, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Mr. Deeds, Just Go WIth It all good, just entertainment and yes some of us are married whereby the CEO gets to watch what she wants every now and then. OR have young children which gives me an excuse to watch those animated movies, Shrek, Puss in Boots, Cars, Planes etc. LOL.

smokeonthewater 08-29-2013 12:39 PM

spend em like they're hot!

Don't forget Big Daddy... "Hey what's your name? he'll write it on the wall... MIND YER BUSINESS!"

At the small ramp behind Mac's B & Tackle, Newport, NJ ( Belmar )....... a guy parks his car next to the ramp just to watch.

Saw him a few weeks ago and said hello - yup, he was there just to watch the assorted ramp action.

Low tide and guess what....yup, guy back's it down off the edge of the ramp - and all the fuss that goes with getting it back up. Two methods work:
1. take a boat anchor, walk down the dock and drop it down to hook onto part of the trailer.
Then a few guys just lift - the trailer comes up real easy, not so heavy under water.
Driver then pulls forward. Done.
2. The wooden board method.......if you can find one, wedge it under and drive forward to force it up.

I had a few mishaps back when I first started trailering. You can never be too careful.
By the way, I'm 8' tall and weight 475 lbs......since so many on this thread provided their statistics.

phatdaddy 09-02-2013 09:27 PM

i checked a chart and according to my weight, i am 7'3".

Blue_Runner 09-03-2013 09:43 AM

Good job Smiley!

There's a nice little flounder hole 100 ft from the boat ramp where I fish. I love to fish there for the entertainment value. I mean every 5 minutes something incredible happens. Guy 1 having a hard time getting on the trailer due to tide, puts boat on the trailer almost sideways and guns the bow into Guy 2's outboard next to him. Guy 2 apparently didn't see that and Guy 1 made sure not to point it out! I've seen it all, and done some of it too.

I got your attention there huh? Yes I redeemed my points and got 4 new radials mounted and balanced, I think the Nitrogen fill cost me $325 bucks tho. BTW- My Wisenheimer License expires tomorrow and the word "gullible" is not in the dictionary..

Sounds like you handled it well Charlie. Be careful getting too close and mouthing off too much though. All that street fighting experience doesn't make you bullet proof. You don't know peoples frame of mind, or what drugs they might be on.

And adam sandler sucks, so does will ferrell.
