V20 vs V21
Hello all,
My name is Bo and I'm down in central FL and new to the website. I saw a 96' V21 for sale and was wondering about the differences between it and the V20. I noticed a transom extension in the pics. Any other major changes? Is there less wood in this model and year? My bro-n-law had an old V20 years ago and I really liked the way it rode and responded to the 225 horses hanging on it. Thanks! Bo |
No less wood, identical below the rubrail other than the transom which you already noticed. The windshield has more of a rake to it and thats about it. I believe the V-21's have poly tanks, so thats a major plus as alot of the older V-20's have gas tank problems.

V20 vs V21
I loved the the V20 I used to have. It was an I/O. With an outboard on my 21 the two biggest differences I see are deck space and the deck drains overboard rather than into the bilge. Both big pluses for the 21. So if you like the 20, I think you'll like the 21 even more.

Thanks for the input gents!

One more thing. It has a 2004 Yammy 150, 2 stroke on it. Is this enough horses?
Thanks again, Bo |

Typically the 150 pushes to around 40 mph wide open, and cruises very nicely at 20 - 30 mph. No problems with 150 hp. |
I'm guessing your looking at this one? If so she looks like a nice clean specimen of the V20/V21 variety that I have drooled over a few times.

Nice boat. Buy it!

Another question.
There's a lot of shallow water here on the FL west coast. How much water does she need to run in? To float with the motor up? I've only been looking for a CC up to this point, but this boat seams like such a good deal. Thanks, Bo |
[QUOTE=carbinebo;206232]Another question.
There's a lot of shallow water here on the FL west coast. How much water does she need to run in? To float with the motor up? I've only been looking for a CC up to this point, but this boat seams like such a good deal. Bo - you remind me ........of me a bit because I ask lots of questions too ! Not really a flats boat, but then again not especially deep either. Will keep you from broiling in the sun though. Those CC's don't offer much shade. The V21 bimini offers some decent shade. A real flats boat.........is just that.........a flats boat, lots of broiling sun, real shallow draft, to pole around the shallows and such. There's no such thing as a perfect boat - only boats best for this or that ! In my case, I switched from a Mako CC to the Wellcraft V21. Not much room on the Mako, lots of room on the V21. Easier to handle the anchor on the CC, better storage on the V21. Etc......etc |
I have a '94 V21 with the exact same motor. I get 2.5mpg on average. Seen 43mph a time or two when pushing the stick all the way up but typically 28 - 30 ish mph cruise speed. Plenty enough for my wants/needs. Motor has been solid with exception of fuel pump failure around 400 hrs. Rebuilt those and no engine problems since.

W/motor tilted UP, she'll float fine in a 1.5'..w/motor down, try to stay in 2.5' AT IDLE SPEED...and I would also add that's a sandy bottom w/no coral heads or oyster beds and obstacles that'll scrape skeg & prop...I don't like to power up in less than 4'...

Thanks for all the info. fellers! Sorry about all the questions. I just want to gather as much information as possible before pulling the trigger.
Thanks, Bo |

I went and looked at the boat on Friday. I really like the layout of the boat. It was solid, just needed a screw here, a hatch there, some new wiring...etc, but overall a nice boat.
It was however, woefully under-powered. The Yamaha 150 better should have pushed it much better. The only thing I can attribute that to would be compression (I forgot to take my tester) or possibly over-propped. Felt like it had a 75 horse. Any ideas? Bo |
Not a good sign about that motor......you're on the right track ref compression check.
As all have confirmed, a good 150 lifts these V's on plane easily, and runs to 40 + or -. If the motors shot and you like the boat......... figure an offer as if no motor included. |

take a spark tester also, could be only hitting on 3 cyl.
|
Spark plug tester, compression tester, and def look at the pitch of the prop. Check engine compression with the engine warm, not cold. Prop should be around a 15-17p (avg) for these boats with a 150 engine. 19 would be pushing it and anything over that is probably overpitched and will have a detrimental effect on performance and engine longevity. (IMHO). Also, do a little homework and find out the engine mfg's recommended WOT rpm's for that engine. Then look at the tach while out in the water and see where you are in relation to that number at WOT. That should give you an indication of how the engine is performing relative to the pitch of the prop.
|
Thanks for the input.
The tach isn't working. I can tell it's nowhere near where it should be though. It just does plane. My buddy's 18 whaler outrage has a 150 Yamaha so I'm familiar with the power of this motor. I'll probably continue my search for a CC. Bo |
As has been observed here several times, it could be as little as a loose spark plug wire. Don't give up on it so fast. Or, it may be something very serious and it's time to walk. You just don't have enough info yet to make an informed decision.
