V21 boat - where do the rod holders drain ?
 

More to the point - while the side panel is off to run new motor switch wiring, it's obvious that the rod holders drain into the hull.

There's foam at the base - where the deck meets the side, and that foam therefore gets wet - so then where does the water go ?

If water was poured into the rod holder, or if water gets in while the panel is off, anyone know if there's a channel to migrate the water away ?

Or, does that foam get wet - stay wet - water continually collects under the deck, and ultimately cause issues.

My V20 is the same...drains into the bilge and gets pumped out by the bilge pump. You could buy caps for them and keep them covered when not in use.

Drains into bilge ? Doesn't look like it drains anywhere...........

My 21 had foam on the outside of the stringers, under the rod boxes as well...and like you, I didn't want water in there...so here's what I did...

And after installation, ran the hoses back to the bilge...bearing dust caps, cheap thru-hulls, hose and hose clamps...I could leave the plug out and run water from a garden hose through there...lol...worked like a charm...

Wow Reel, that's a pretty smart idea.

Greenie... look up my post where I showed my boat with the deck off. My floor was soft, so I removed it to strengthen it.. I redid all the wood on the underside and then glassed it to seal it from getting wet like that again. But when I had the cap off, I found that all the foam was soaked... I literally filled several garbage cans with completely saturated foam... to answer your question, no, the water does NOT drain anywhere that I could find. Yes, there were some very small holes between the compartments, but with the foam in the way of them most of the water just stays trapped in the compartments. That saturated foam added LOTS of pounds of weight, to say nothing of the stink from sitting there. I had to carve it all out and then refoam everything. What a pain. .,... But now my deck is strong, and my boat is several hundred pounds lighter. And when I had the cap off I took the opportunity to reinforce the transom where the bracket is... there's a gap of about 3/4 of an inch where the bracket comes through, and I filled that with putty and then glassed across that to the stringer on both sides.

Use Reelapeelin's solution to fix the problem or do like I did and just use a solid pipe cap on the bottom to prevent any water from getting into the boat in the first place. (You get them from home despot in the plumbing section).

Reel, that's one hell of a great solution to the problem. :clap: I was thinking of going with these units from eBay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/PERKO-SPD-2-...#ht_3149wt_908 but after seeing your fix I may just go that way instead.

The pics are not the greatest, but at least they show you the foam and the layout. Oh, and rereading the post I remember I drilled holes between the compartments..originally there are none, which is why the water just lays there. So it's curcial to keep water from getting in there in the first place. I'll never understand WHY or WHAT Wellcraft was thinking to build compartments like that, open on the top, and then put rod holders in that drain right into those compartments... I mean...wtf? :fight:

Maybe Wellcraft was building these to have a " shelf life " of approx X # of years.....
Having the rod holders drain right into those sections seems too obvious to be a simple mistake. Just tubing to the bilge would have been appropriate.

Well what we gotta remember is our beloved V20s were not built or meant to be top-tier boats...not that the top tier boats of the time were perfect in every way, but some did address issues like rod holder drains...they left things undone so we could take care of them later and have a forum to talk about it...some foresight, huh?..:sex:

It lays flat, its cheap, fits over the end of the rod holder, held on with a hose clamp, you can run it to the bilge

Yeah...I was tryin' to think of that when greene 1st put this up...oughtta work pretty good as long as something doesn't accidently get on top of it and hold it shut....:clap:

This may be what I'm looking for........a simple line from the rod holders to the bilge.

Reelapeelin's set up is fantastic - I understand the initial hardware connection, but the rest of the explaination flew right over my head.

Bottom line is all V21's kept outside with uncovered rod holders have been subject to distructive water intrusion ?
I'd like to call Wellcraft and try to find an engineer that's been with them since the 90's to discuss the how & why ........... I suppose there is no reason, just big company production with no interest in better than the cheapest rigging.

Reason I got into this is while my 200 Etec HO is getting ready for rigging, I removed the side panel so the start switch line could be run to the console. The big rain came in Friday, and I ran back over there to cover with plastic. I'm lucky in that my V seems to have had the easy life - bone dry foam from all I've felt with the side panels off. Well, the rain was starting to drip down the side and I got another look at how Wellcraft designed it. I got lucky - uncovered, or just uncovered rod holders, super heavy rain and these boats could be permanently wet under the deck ???? Who was the idiot who set that up ?
I'm ranting...........anyway, I'll just rig light hoses from the rod holders to the bilge and be done with it.

The type of foam that's used in these types of boats is prone to getting saturated with water over a long period of time. That's a known fact. But if they (Wellcraft) had just made a small hole on the downward side of each compartment so that any standing water could drain towards the bilge it would have reduced or eliminated so many problems. And it wouldn't have cost a cent in extra material. <sigh>
Anyways, I used pipe caps on mine to keep the water out completely... ya, my rods get a liitle wet while they sit in the holders, but they are made for that anyways, and a turkey baster syphons out all but the tinyest amount of water from the holders. Still, I may convert over to the tubing on the bottom of the holders somewhere along the line. And I'm seriously thinking about replacing all my holders with the ones that have the caps at the top, just for extra security.

I used the equipped Attwood drain nipples and routed hose to starboard and port stern coolers which drain to transom well. my bilge stays dry
