Christmas is ruined

Well I went out and started the boat after about a month and got real bad news, it never pissed any water. I guess letting it sit while I was recovering from surgery it went bad, is their anyone that can help me locate the right parts to repair it?
1996 Johnson 200 ocean runner.

Run a wire inside the pee hole as they get clogged sometimes. Were the muffs on good and how much water pressure were you using? Did you get any overheat alarms? Could be time for a waterpump. Any idea when the last waterpump was done?

phatdaddy 12-20-2012 07:42 AM

needing a water pump will not ruin christmas,
not being able to get the foot off will ruin christmas.

if you don't know when the last one was changed, its time to change it anyway

make sure you paint Marvel Mystery Oil on the new water pump impeller. that will soak into the rubber and keep it soft for years. will also reduce the rubber of getting memory. it will help to protect and save your impeller from a dry start. i do that to all water pump kits i install. torn one open after 10 yrs and still looked new and no memory from sitting. i have never had one come back with water pump issues.

Damn skools...that's a great idea. I've used WD40 to do basically the same thing when installing a new pump so there isn't a dry start, but I never though about using MMO. Thank you for the info.

99% sure the tube is got dirt in it or some random bug. Dirt dobbers clog mine up all the time.

Jdog 12-20-2012 05:12 PM

I will try using a wire to see if it is clogged and I have no idea when it was las changed, so I will change it just to make sure, but I have no idea what is the correct part to order and where to order it.
Thank's for all the info

P.S. I watched a video of a older johnson being replaced and they said you have to take the bolt off the shift linkage behind the carbs so the foot will come off. but im not sure if my 200 is the same way.

I have a friend that will help me, but still dont know if I need the kit or just the impeller???

THEFERMANATOR 12-20-2012 05:19 PM

Put it in gear
Remove the cowling
then remove the lower pans(not completely neccesary, but sure makes it easier)
next remove the bolt that holds the shift shaft under the carbs
raise the engine up some now
remove the trim tab
remove the bolt under the trim tab and the other one just in front of it, then remove the bolts along the sides of the lower unit and it should slide off.

All in all not a bad job to do, but it is a bit heavy. and can be a pain to get the splines to line back up sliding it back in.

phatdaddy 12-20-2012 06:43 PM

jdog, i have a merc, so not as familar with omc, but i would get a kit that includes the housing along with the impeller. i also would recommend using oem parts, not sierra or other look alikes.

macojoe 12-21-2012 12:06 AM

Also when replacing bolts coat them with anti sieze, will keep bolts from corroding if need to get apart again. pretty easy job!

Lots of good pointers in this thread.

Fellas I must ask. I've replaced a lot of waterpumps in my life and yes its a pretty easy job. But what is the deal with the o-ring at the top of the shaft the goes into the power head? And do you need it? My lower unit came of with out one. I did the coat hanger trick to try and get it out with no luck.

It's to help keep grease on the driveshaft splines and prevent saltwater from getting in there and seizing them together. Without it the grease will wash out and the splines are likely to seize into the crank leaving you with a 1 piece engine that can't be taken apart. I've had one like this in the past, and MJ had one as well.

i have seen alot of guys here at the boat ramp when they get there boats out of the water the rev the living **** out of there motors i think there trying to get all the salt water out of there motor but at the same time i think there heating that rubber impellor to the point it fuses to the housing and next ime they go out it ends up breaking i have never had to replace one on all the outboards i have had and when i no im not going to use my boat for a while i run the engine in a tank add some truck wash and watch all the white snow come out then i drian the tub fill it with fresh water and add 2 litres of wd 40 let if run for a while and then im happy :nice:

macojoe 01-01-2013 04:13 PM

Yes I had to junk that motor! Left it hanging upside down for a week and it still would not come apart!!

All the reving up in the world will not get the salt out, has to be fresh water flush after, and that isn't enough really, the best way is to take to a lake or something and dip it in, and run it for a bit.
I flush mine with the hose after every use!

christmas

Jdog, lots of good advice here & if your impeller is old you should replace it. But take a look athe guys that said check for dirt daubers in the pee hole. We all live on the north Gulf like you & we've been there done that.

I remember replacing an impeller years ago & the old one looked fine, started it up, no water, poked a piece of weedeater string in the hole, bam!, muddy water & peeing away!

Check the easy stuff first.

Doug

yeah that o-ring at the top is a good thing, i've had one stuck too. had to cut the drive shaft then remove the power head and heat then pry the shaft out of the power head...

aussie 01-08-2013 09:38 PM

did you get the boat fixe---is there a happy ending---

I did this to one before. The driveshaft was stuck so tight I ended up welding a flange to the cut off shaft so I could use a 5 pound slide hammer on it. After 2 hours with the torch and slide hammer it finally gave up. Cleaned up nice with a barrel brush.

Stillrunning 01-16-2013 11:06 AM

if I'm correct that 1996 pee hole removes so you can screw a hose in to flush the motor. Just take it off and see if its clogged.
