Yeah, they are gnargly looking! Beaks about the size of a big parrot! I made sure to stay away from that end of it lol.

I accidentally caught my first squid on hook and line while bottom fishing last year. Only 4 - 5 inches long!?!

We did not intend on catching these, we were fishing for Ling Cod with fresh squid and they were going crazy for it! We actually went back to the marina and got a a couple squid jigs and they didnt work as well as a halibut rig.

Is the other fish in the pic a Ling Cod??? Ugly lookin bastards.....the Cod's as well:beer:

Nice work!!! Those squid fight funny on rod/reel....just like octopus

Blue_Runner 12-10-2012 03:53 PM

:head:What to do with those squid? Bait? Dinner? Both? I like fried calamari but is there a special squid for that or will any squid work?

MAC67 12-10-2012 03:57 PM

Yes, the other one is a Ling, they are very ugly but the blue ones look really cool. They also have a mouth full of some crazy teeth that will mess you up real quick like! Squid fight really funny, and then they balst you with water when you pull em up! A one point we had a triple hook up on these and there was water spraying everywhere lol! It was quite fun, except my buddy got inked once all over the side of his jacket!

MAC67 12-10-2012 03:58 PM

LOOKS GOOOOOD!! Yeah had one of those little squid ink on the boat and got on my waterproof boat bag. Still have ink stains on it but it is something to remember that day by.

Once tried putting small squid caught in the castnet into the livewell........did not work out so well. I can imagine those bigguns are full of ink!

MAC67 12-10-2012 04:23 PM

I had to drain a re fill my live well several time to keep it somewhat clean. I really hope I can get into some more of these next weekend, It was a lot of fun!

Awsome catch!!! The Ling are kind of a lazy fighiting fish but pull for the first 30 or 40 seconds how are the squid for a fight?

MAC67 12-12-2012 09:39 PM

I would say they fight just about the same as a ling, BUT when you get them out of the water they give you a nice shower!

randlemanboater 12-14-2012 08:41 AM

Looks like a good day on the water.

I have never caught a squid on a hook, but have reeled in several octupi...they just feel heavy on the line until they get to the boat, then they start squirting water and trying to wrap up everything.

I rather enjoy fried squid...I bet fresh caught is extra good.
