thats a nice boat there willy I've had 3 whalers and loved them all 89 sport 15ft I bought brand new at a dealer in Stone Harbor ...cant go wrong with a whaler.
ps never owned one that big tho

spareparts 11-25-2012 09:57 PM

from what I've heard, those were complete turds. I've never ridden in one, but that what I've heard from other mechanics.I may be wrong, but note the 22 mph cruise, not knots. Thats pretty slow for a pair of 5.7s in a 27 ft boat. I don't like the looks of that engine compartment either, I don't see how you could reach the spark plugs.

I should have the pics of that cat this week, plus I'll put you in touch with the guy on that diesel boat.

THEFERMANATOR 11-25-2012 11:42 PM

I'm with spare, that thing looks like a nightmare to do maintence on. And 22MPH at 3400 would make that thing a hog to feed. I see it is a pretty flat hull in the back which would make it solid at anchor and the drift, but will not be a smooth ride in the snot. And the only stuff I could find on the WHALER board said it is the dog of the WHALER fleet, and a real gas hog. If your looking for a boat in that size range with twin screws, look at a BLACKFIN. They were built by employess of BERTRAM who worked on the 28, but decided to fix all of it's shortcomings.

willy 11-26-2012 01:19 AM

That is what I needed to know from a couple of guys I needed to hear from. A buddy sent me the link.
Thanks
Much appreciated, the hunt continues

bradford 11-26-2012 06:03 PM

She ain't too cute in the looks department either.

RidgeRunner 11-26-2012 06:17 PM

WutChewTalkinbout Willis?
I love the looks of her. I see one up close every time I go fishing at the Suwannee. Bracketed with twin 250 OX66's. I was just commenting to my friend Bruce this past weekend that I liked the looks of it as it trolled by us a half dozen times. I was somewhat disappointed when I read what Spare and Ferm thought of it. It is just real big and I figured being a Whaler and Big it would crush the waves. Nice smirk like the classic Whalers too. Oh well. I've been wrong before.

Theres quite a few different 27 WHALERS, and I believe this model was only offered as a straight inboard. The bracketed hulls were a deep V hull to the stern from what I found doing a quick search, and is a much more desireable hull. Same length and beam, but quite a bit different below the waterline. They reffered to this model as the 27 full cabin over at continuouswave.

randlemanboater 11-26-2012 07:56 PM

I looked at one of those years ago that had a full tower and twin 300 Evinrude V-8's...I asked about fuel consumption and the guy just laughed.

Here ya go. Twin etecs.

Monkey Butler 11-26-2012 08:49 PM

I bet that if the condition is as described and you could talk him down to $10k then you could double your money up this way come spring.

People will buy a Mckee or Carolina Skiff at top dollar with fake Whaler decals slapped on them.

Seacrets 11-26-2012 08:53 PM

That's a whaler guardian series, primarily sold to Military and government agencies. Part of the gunwhale lifts out for divers. Hell of a boat, however the one you're looking at will beat you like a rented mule. It sure ain't a Bertram.

smokeonthewater 11-26-2012 09:26 PM

WOW, my 28 welly with twin 5.7's runs 35 mph at 3500 rpm and tops out at 48 mph and is a wallet burning gas thirsty SOB... I can't imagine feeding a smaller (and likely) lighter boat that is that much slower!

spareparts 11-26-2012 10:49 PM

EDIT:
my bet.......hey block them high at that yard, makes it easy to paint the bottoms.

spareparts 11-26-2012 11:25 PM

i know where a pair of 4.2L VM/mercruiser 250 hp diesels are sitting

willy 11-26-2012 11:34 PM

Love it Dave, but too big for me, now anyhow.

I like that 28 of your friends but I do not want the single seat arrangement on the helm. Don't like that at all.

The BW is out of the picture after the comments heard here and elsewhere.

THEFERMANATOR 11-26-2012 11:57 PM

This is what you NEED! The 30 is everything the 28 was, and took care of all of it's shortcomings. It has a slightly lower deadrise which makes her a little slower than the deep V hulls in teh snot, but is a drier ride with higher sides for fishing and a USEABLE cabin in it for 2 to weekend on. They're super rare hulls, and until recently were priced out of sight(5 years ago tehse boats were fetching $50K plus with gas power that was getting tired).

Only thing better would be if this one is still for sale.

spareparts 11-27-2012 06:38 AM

I'll ask and see if Sea J's still for sale( I know most of the people that responded in that tread on THT). That would be a nice ride with the 6bt's

willy 11-27-2012 05:24 PM

That Bertram in Mt. Pleasant is sweet. Your right Ferm, looks like an improved B28
Probably way to much money for me I would think.

I know the feeling. I hated selling mine, but having electric for the house was more important. Things got better and we bought a travel trailer instead, but with the new baby that is going to have to go now too. Your not alone up there in the feeling.

macojoe 11-28-2012 10:18 AM

I have to get rid of my 30' camper also! All the toys going bye bye!! It sucks!

phatdaddy 11-28-2012 07:41 PM

ferm, that's the reason i bought the v-20, had our first baby & needed a place for naps out of the weather. had a 21 hydrasport center console before that.

bradford 11-29-2012 10:18 AM

I've always had a thing for the old Silvertons. Nearly pulled the trigger on a 28' -- it was immaculate inside and out -- but it only had a single engine and would not get up and go at all. That was at least 15 years ago, and I still see that boat around, and it's still gorgeous . . . and slow.

THEFERMANATOR 12-06-2012 03:18 PM

Feel like coming to Florida Willy? There is not alot of these around as only 6 were ever built from what I can find out. Looks like a STEAL if it doesn't need any major engine work.
