Surveyor says that the breach in the hull bottom has to be inpected and repaired by first pulling the cockpit floor and then the main fuel tank.
Then the bulkhead tabbing all have to be inspected. Especially for a hull that was being banged repeatedly for hours by othe big boats. The rudders are both tweaked as are the shafts, the rudders are actually pointed in diff directions indicating other issues in the steering components. Te props are both tweaked, one of them pretty badly. The skegs that hold the cutlass bearings are both tweaked. Basically all new running gear is needed. The both would have to be faired and sanded and awl gripped which is a 8-10 thousand job on a boat this size. The stainless bow rail is mangled up and needs to be replaced. No idea on any bulkhead engine room or transmissions yet, or inside components for the cabin. So it is going to be a very expensive proposition to repair. With a lot of unknowns. |

And Barnagat no adjuster yet, they say it will be awhile. They suggested I get my own adjuster and forward ti to them. But I don't know anyone for that. Has to be multiple disciplines involved. Glass man, mechanic etc. If anyone up here knows anyone who does that sort of thing please let me know. |

I wouldn't worry about pulling the cockpit out, not that big of a deal,glas-teck in Florida actually makes new cockpit liners for older Bertrams so you can get rid of about 500 lbs of excess. Local glass guy here has made his own floors and done several bertrams

So long as the engines and trans are good, you can often times find a 28 in need of repower for under $5K in good shape minus engines and trans. There is one down here by me that can be had with a triple axle trailer and tuna tower for about $6K with no engines or trans.

You find a Bertram 28 up here where they are much loved in decent shape with diesels in good shape with good electronics you are looking at a 35-40 G boat. Even in today market you will find gas engine boats, as long as the tanks have been done with a good hour range and quite old like mine, a 1972, for around 20g's. If you got a recent repower with the preferred engines, which believe it or not is not diesel but Crusader 350's which offer ideal compromise for power performance and durability and the hull is in good shape you are looking at a 30G boat. Minimum. I know, I looked at several. Many that were good in the power area had serious structural issues, were selling cheaper. So if you are good with major fiberglass repairs, replacing rotted bulkheads etc. you can do well. even up here. One of my favorite hulls are the early ChrisCraft versions of what became the Bertrams. Hunt designed hulls. They were better set up in the cabin and put together just as well and sometimes better than Bertrams. There are a couple for sale up her in the low to mid twenties but need substantial bulkhead and or stringer repair. A couple had diesels. I love these old boats. But I have not seen anything for the prices you guys are quoting up here that did not have some serious problems and most would never pass a survey. |

your survey should have an appraised value, the insurance company was provided a copy of the survey, don't settle for less than whats stated on the survey. IF they want to argue about it, look on line, pick the 5 most expensive 28 Bertrams you can find with similar equipment and age, print them out and have them ready. When you get your check, head down here and I'll pick out a nice one for you!
