replacing fuel vent on V21
The plastic outside hull fuel vent broke off and I need to replace it.
Who's used what for this application ? Figure I'll upgrade to a nicer fitting. Thanks |
Get rid of the plastic... get a nice ss one from Perko or Seasense. Check out eBay first though.

x2 Upgrade to stainless, But do not get the one like the pic below. I had one on the 250 Sportsman and it would intake water from waves. I cut the hose on it twenty miles out and watched in horror as every wave came alongside the boat the vent hose would spit a little water into the boat. It just sticks out too far.

I bought a nice stainless one from Reel 2 years ago. Still haven't installed it. Looked at it tho. That itty bitty round inspection hatch is gonna make it difficult, but not impossible. My plastic one broke but is still there, kinda.

SS is the way to go!! I have one like the pic above with no issues. But had a friend that use to get water in his under way, he put a clam shell over it facing toward the back and no more worry!

Another thing, I believe the vent hose should have a big loop in it right next to the vent. That way if water does happen to get in, it won't be able to travel up and around the loop to reach the fuel tank.

Sorry Greene...but that's an old Wive's Tale...think about it...if that loop is full of water or any other liquid, and the motor starts drawing fuel from the tank, what's gonna happen?...it's gonna suck that water right into the tank...if it doesn't, then it'll clog the vent and eventually stall the motor... |
i ask my wife about it and she wanted to know why in the world was i asking her a boat question.
well, that went over like a hair on a wedding cake... |
That might work if the loop is above the vent. Then any water runs back out

Seems the vent line being a larger inside diameter it would take an aweful lot of water to form a vaccum strong enough to suck the water around the loop. More water than could get in at one time - unless it went UNDER the water - then you got lots of other issues!
All I know is I've heard others say it and my V21 has a big ol loop in it above the vent. Factory I assume since the vent hose is pretty old and decrepid looking. |
Oh man, gotta read this.....some people apparently got into it on THT over whether a loop would trap or drain water from the vent. Some nasty name calling LOL!!!
http://www.thehulltruth.com/archive/t-388463.html I still think a loop done the right way would never allow water in the tank under normal circumstances. |
A lot of the new boats are coming with a flush mount fuel vent. It's 316 stainless and 90 degree. I'm not the best at posting pics but the Sea-Choice part number is #50-23061 and should sell for @ $25. It's probably a Perko.
