gettin BSB while the gettin is good

Had a couple good trips to the wrecks for Black Sea Bass Sunday and Thursday. Averaging 10 nice keepers per person. Gotta get em early cause the Head Boats are hammering the keepers hard every day and there are no fluke around to distract them.
Speaking of fluke, I drifted a mile on good May fluking grounds with not even a throwback.
Striper bite died off but should pick up after the full moon...I hope!

You made a smart move hitting the seabass for good action and keepers.
Striper bite was off yesterday, deep and in close. The charter boats were working the bunker off Asbury - big bluefish. I even had a huge gator blue on my largest spoon.
Thanks for your report.

You guys got it made up there. We took our limit Sunday, too... down here that's 5 per person. They opened them June 1 and will close before July is over. here they close them when the quota is met. How do they know when the quotas met? Wild azz guess.

perogies and fried black willys!!!!!! you are the man!!! I havent fished in about 3 months. I might take the Albemarle this weekend.

macojoe 06-05-2012 09:23 AM

Great going!! I love them things!! How about a eight up in the recipe section on how you cook them up?
We start getting 10 per person in May, but then its increased to 20 each mid June till Oct.

oh, by the way, CLAM is the bait for BSB. I was on a buddy's boat Sunday. He was a mate on a Belmar head boat for 10 years. He said you have to use clam. We did great.
I went out Thurs on my boat with squid & spearing thinking I'll fish for both fluke & seabass. Could not buy a fluke and seabass were barely pecking. We went back in to the closest bait (Hoffmans) and bought 5 lbs of clam ($20). Back out to the reef...bang,,bang bang...they jumped all over it.

We talked about taking my V21 out to the canyons with five 10 gallon fuel tanks in reserve and one new spare battery. No epirb, no raft, no radar, one engine but a lot of spirit and enormous tackle.

Then we decided it probably isn't a good idea.
What's going on at the 20 line ?

SkunkBoat 06-06-2012 09:34 PM

I was invited on a 34fter to fish for tuna at the Princess(50miles) this Friday but I had to decline due to commitments. I will post if they have any luck. If they do well and Sunday is flat, I might make that trip again

--NOAA Offshore forecast not good for Sunday...FRIDAY is the day and I can't go:(

Blue_Runner 06-07-2012 12:44 PM

Last time we fished for BSB I switched to 3 oz. hopkins jig. You did not even have to jig it. Just drop it down and hold on. I caught 5 or more to every 1 that the cut baiters caught - and they were bigger too. Everybody on the boat switched to a jig and we tore em up.

A buddy of mine who does not fish regularly was having a hard time catching one, let alone a keeper. I walked over to his side of the boat, dropped the jig in the water and asked him to hold my rod for a second. He looked at me like I was crazy - then reeled in a fish.

I gotta DISAGREE 100%. I must say seabass like nothin more than themselves to eat and the chunks stay on the hook alot better. I have caught double-digit seabass on one 2" peice. Just cant beat it!!!!

I will throw some seabass pics up next time I go since no one on here really cared to see Grouper or Cobia........:head:

awthacker 06-07-2012 03:24 PM

We do well on squid. I could see where cut bsb would work well, just don't get caught with it on the boat... they will cite you for it. Has to meet size/bag limit requirements and must be landed whole.

macojoe 06-07-2012 05:40 PM

Squid is the bait of choice here also, when I have used clam they come but no were as much as with the squid

SkunkBoat 06-07-2012 08:46 PM

yes, I have used squid with much success, and jigs and teasers with squid or cut-up bergals(cunners). And I wouldn't normally buy clam, In fact I didn't intend to buy it. But we were strokin' it when my buddy called us to see what was up and he said "i told you you gotta have clam". It was kind of a running joke, anyways, we said #### it, lets go get some clam.

Now maybe by the time we got back out there they were hungry and probably would have eaten anything but we DID pound em on the clam.....

Clam does have the added benefit of hookin up with some Tog too even though they gotta go back...

hmm, BSB with a hopkins jig? Maybe I will try that.

We went out Sat afternoon and had both clams and squid.

The clams seemed to be catching more fish, (esp BSB), but for some reason they were very soft\mushy and were not staying on the hook that well.

We were only catching one BSB per dozen scupp or so. Only kept one BSB that was fairly good size (prob 18 inches). BSB's are OK, but not a lot of meat compared to a nice bluefish! Wind\waves were picking up so we didn't stay long.

WOW!!! She's a beaut!!!!!

I might be willing to make an offer just some questions about the landscaping......

Does the Virginia Creeper come with it?

Does the boat have an irrigation system?

Will you warranty the Bow Garden??????

And the Helm Garden? Warranty?

RKC - if you try the hopkins, buy some split rings and replace the factory treble hook with a J hook. The treble works fine - but abou 15% - 20% of the fish will have the whole treble in their mouth, completely pinned shut. Not only does it take much more time to get the hook out, it doesn't help the short ones that have to go back....

Much, much easier than bait!

Thanks, looks like I may be taking my grandkids out this Sunday. Probably be spending most of my time baiting their hooks with SMALL pieces of squid...

Sound good. I'm gonna be taking my daughter, a friend and his son. We'll probably just stay inside the rocks and hunt flatties. If it is calm we may hit a few spots inside 10 miles for BSB and big spanish tho.

Just realized I said to get some split rings - you should be able to use the split ring that is holding the treble....don't know why I said that?
