Started my trailer rebuild today

Then I get a email from a friend for a 2001 Load rite trailer for $1200!! With title!! I just add tires to mine last week, I have all new leaf springs, hubs, and all hard wear to fix mine!
Tore one side apart today, but thats it, now what to do??
By a nice looking trailer with brakes and title, or finish fixing mine and have no brakes or title??
Brakes will be junk soon jon new one any way, and i will never fix, As for title I have only had one once in 20+ years of owning trailers any way.

If I buy the new to me trailer, I will need to sell mine and then see if I can get my money back on the parts I bought?? If not ZI going to have to take a little loss and sell all??

What you guys think?

Well, from where I sit, there's two ways to look at the problem.

1) We're not getting any younger. So how much is your time to rebuild your present trailer worth, as opposed to having one good to go?

2) $1200 is not exactly chicken feed, and given your present situation perhaps it's better to rebuild your present trailer for a lot less than the twelve hundred for the new to you one.

So that's your choices. If it were me, and i could afford it, I think I'd probably buy the one already made. Fishing season is short and my time is precious. Why waste it working on the trailer when you can be yelling at CB for catching all the fish? :head:

Easy question, stick with what ya got. You've already spent the money and while time is money its not like the time you spend rebuilding what ya got would be spent on making money elsewhere so if you spend MORE money on a trailer that is already done, what will you really be doing with the time you saved? You know as well as I you will spend it spending more money. Now it may be spending money enjoying yourself on your boat but it is still spending more money.

macojoe 06-02-2012 03:49 AM

i have been thinking about this all night!! I can sell my trailer the way it is, which is pretty good, take back most of the parts for the cash, and sell whats left over, and be even with the trailer price.
now I normally never worry about fixing stuff my self, but right now I can't, so I must rely on others. And it is never as I want it when done! Just ask CB about some wire issues I am having. He is going to come by when he gets a chance to fix that mess a bit for me.
You guys are right my time is worth alot to me and, buying a new to me trailer will be done in a few min.. But now I have to steal the mortgage money, and hope I can get rid of mine fast to make my payment on time?

I am so confused!!

RidgeRunner 06-02-2012 06:54 AM

If it has you confused, fix what you already have with the parts you already have.(get a friend to help if you have to, it has to be put back together anyway to get it out of your yard:-) There will be other trailers, try to sell yours first (the improvements will help move the one you have for more $$). Don't put yourself in a bind over the gloss of a "new to you" trailer. Been there, done that, hope to never repeat.
Brakes under the OX would definitely be on my to do list. That is a lot of boat. On the other hand you have probably been without brakes for a while, just be careful.. I don't understand titles on motors and trailers, FL doesn't have it. Any way to get a title to the trailer you have?

phatdaddy 06-02-2012 07:49 AM

i would fix what you have with what you got & move on. i promise you, the new to you trailer will not have new parts & the one you rebuild will.

macojoe 06-02-2012 08:37 AM

i have never had brakes on any trailer!! the trailer i have now had them not working when i got it 5 years ago, and i never thought for a second that i would fix them. The new trailer has them but do they work? I don't care.

I took the springs off only one side of mine so far, not to hard to fix it the rest of way on that side. i can return the other parts and sell as is or give new buyer option to buy the rest for himself?
the big thing is no title, lots of talk about trailer reg going in affect , then i screwed if no have one! i will go look and see, can't hurt right??

What's this about new trailer regs???

I've got a buddy with a 25' SeaRay stranded at a Dick's marina in Bourne. Bad engine and no trailer.

He might be interested in your old one. What are you looking for $$$ wise.

If it is apart now I could put it back together.

macojoe 06-02-2012 12:56 PM

the old trailer had a broken leaf spring, so i bought all new ones, but only manged to get the broke side fixed. but i do have the other stuff for the other side but i not doing it! has good tires on it and the rollers and fenders are all ok. i bought all new hubs that i am going to return as there is nothing wrong with the old ones, but they use lug bolts instead of lug nuts which make it a huge pain in the a$$ to change tires!
Trailer is in real good shape really just thought i get l leagle and update some.

I bought the new trailer above today and hoping to get it swamped out tomorrow?
what you thinking on your buddy?? whats he want to spend?? maybe we can do a deal? call me 508 360 1468 thanks

RidgeRunner 06-02-2012 03:12 PM

I'm just on my out the door for daughter's birthday party. Left a message for my friend.

Like I said, his boat has been in storage at Dick's and they say it needs a complete I/O repower. He is not real boat wise and I think they are trying to take him for a ride considering it ran when put away. I told him I could take a look at it and see what was really wrong with it. I was going to unload my boat and go pick his up to work on it at my house.

A trailer wasn't on his radar screen but it would save me a lot of work and even if he decides to sell the boat he could probably get his money back on the trailer.

Ballpark what are you looking to get? <> $1000?

macojoe 06-02-2012 05:18 PM

you right on the money!! let me know:beer: much better to sell a boat on trailer for sure!

if he is ok with the lug bolts instead of lug nuts, all that needs to be done are one side leaf springs and not in a hurry, and i will give him the two springs, and u bolts.

Monkey Butler 06-03-2012 12:17 PM

Talked to my pal. He agrees getting a trailer is a good idea whatever he decides on the boat. I'll give you a call.

macojoe 06-03-2012 01:56 PM

Sounds like a plan, Thanks!!

Monkey Butler 06-04-2012 09:24 PM

MJ,

I'm still planning on coming Tuesday AM but I need to make an appearance at work first so I won't be able to make it until around 10AM, okay?

If it works out I'll come back the next day or two with my truck.

macojoe 06-05-2012 12:54 AM

ok 10 am!!

Monkey Butler 06-05-2012 07:25 PM

Nice to meet you today MJ, sorry it did not work out.

I had not seen my buddy's boat until today. He bought it last season and was not even sure what model he had. All he knew was 24-25' searay.

When I went to look at it I have never seen this model before.

The boat length along the waterline is only 21' but the bow overhang is huge. Over 4 feet from bow eye to tip of bow and almost six from waterline.
