Trim tabs too big?

I got a pair of 12x16 lenco for nothin. I have a '77 v20 cc fish. Powering with a 225 Yamaha excel.
I'd like to hear from the "gods" to see what yall think about these bigger tabs and the repower with the 225.
Thanks for your input.

Can't see why the tabs would be bad.. Bigger = more surface area = better lift of the stern = easier to control boat. If you're really unsure you can give them to me and I'll try them out on my boat for 10 years or so to make sure they will be ok for you to use. As to the 225 on the stern, I have a 225 Johnson on my 78' and the boat flys just fine.. just my .02 cents

make sure you don't mount them flush with the bottom, raise them up about 1/2 inch at the transom and make sure the tabs will retract at least another 1 above horizontal when in the upright position. That much tab can drag a boat down speed wise. You could probably sell them and buy a set of 8X12 bennetts and have some cash left over(I don't care for lencos)

Although a buddy has lencos and no probs since 2006, but I think selling and replacing is the way to go...

Brings up a good reason to go smaller on tabs...SAFETY!!...inadverdently burying the bow at the wrong time could become a real problem...I remember just after installing my 1st tabs, trying to plane up and the bow DIGGIN' like crazy before it dawned on me my tabs were down...I can imagine what oversized would do...

Running Barnegat inlet is scary most times ...with or without tabs. There's a reason that more boats have been lost there than any other inlet on the east coast...:head:

!st time I ever heard of Barnegat Inlet was a documentary show long ago on Coast Guard training...those guys were out there in HUGE ROLLERS, rollin' over 42' boats they were strapped into... I thought BI looked like that all the time til last year...most dangerous thing that weekend were the impatient boaters who thought their time was more important than anybody else's...we got 'em down here too...

Thanks for all the advise. I can probably piece together a set of 12x9 tabs and install them.
Does anyone need a set of lencos for a bigger boat, I will sell them at a good price. I have tabs and control box, no switch, but can get a switch for $85 more. They are off a lift kept boat, used for less than a year.

Sounds like I may be in for a surprise using the tabs on the V21.

On my previous boat full down tabs didn't cause any problems, other than not being fast for higher speed cruising - normal operations.
We'll see.

Regarding B I - lots of boaters us it, just have to be more careful with tide / wave action.
I'd offer up Shark River Inlet as perhaps the safest on the Jersey coast. Real short, deep, straight and easy.

Bgreene I don't think they are saying regular size tabs are a problem on 20' boat. It's a concern using the 16" long tabs i was going to use on such a small boat that may be a liability. Most standard trim tabs are 12" wide x 9" long.

I'd say that the larger size tabs would almost have to cause more reaction than that of smaller ones.kind of like the reasoning for larger ailerons on a stunt aircraft.
