Project: I dont know WTH to call it yet

Ive wanted a smaller skiff for sometime now for quick trips after work when I dont feel like dealing with the Hooker by myself or even with another person along. I picked this old thing up for 100 bucks including trailer.

When I got her home:

As it sits now after removing the floor, some grinding and cleanup:

Im one of those that believe when you take a boat from nothing in a full resto the name comes to you as you work. Right now its something vulgar as she has already claimed one Dewalt grinder. It was on its last leg anyhow but I pray its not a sign of things to come. :head:

I had no desire to ever do another resto but something about the poor ugly thing and the hull design spoke to me. I even had Mrs Stink look it over with me and she agreed and felt sorry for the lil thing too. She has restored several boats with me and can glass and fair with the best of em. I dont know how much she will help with this one but it was good to have her blessing.

I was unsure of it due to it not being as wide as I wanted but a quick dunk into the pond Friday evening after work put my fears at ease. Its really stable for its size due to the small catamaran style "pontoons". I walked around in it, jumped and leaned all over. It felt pretty solid for not having any weight or decks on it. This should only improve as I add some poundage to it.
After the new floor I plan on doing front and rear deck and extending the gunwales in about 6" on each side for a nice clean flats type boat finish. I think a little 2 stroke 20 or 25 should push it nicely. Maybe a little jackplate and I bet she will damn near run over wet grass. :sun:

here is an idea of what Im looking at..simple and clean.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/Boatplan.gif

Im thinking seafoam green hull, white/off white interior with black splatter/webbing.

I also found out from a buddy who had one years ago what hull it is:

Said he had one years ago. Was a good boat and handled great the only downside was the leaks into the 3 pontoon areas due to the way the floor was glued in. Wont be a problem when I done with the new floor install though.

It's good to know for sure what it is now.

Wish me luck guys Ideas and sugestions always welcome! :sun:

I can see your vision Stinkman.

Reminds me of the 1970ish 13' Salem Skiff project I bought for $150. Had gum saplings growing up thru the rotten floor. I traded it to my bud for a Holland grill in need of attention. I spent $75 and about 5 hours restoring the Holland. He spent aroun $2000 and countless hours restoring the boat.....freakin AWESOME boat tho. Just fished on it last weekend.....and I get to eat from the Holland weekly. It seems I got the better deal!?!!?! Don'tcha think? :sun:

Giterdone!

randlemanboater 02-29-2012 04:42 PM

That will be a sweet boat when you are done with it SH. Good luck with the resto!

spareparts 02-29-2012 08:03 PM

thats how my 14 McKee started out, it was supposed to be a quick, cheap redo, took over a year and I don't want to talk about how much money

bgreene 02-29-2012 09:33 PM

Put a 25hp on it..........so it moves !

step up here 02-29-2012 09:59 PM

not that is buying a shell. lots of luck with your project!:zip:

phatdaddy 02-29-2012 10:35 PM

i was doing some work in a guys back yard and saw a 13 whaler hull full on leaves, debris, car parts, etc. i ask what he was going to do with it, so we ended up trading $200 worth of sprinkler work for it. that was 17 years ago and we still have & love that boat. it is a fun ride. enjoy!!

fishingwithblue 03-01-2012 08:46 AM

That would make a sweet duck boat.....or flats boat. Put a poling platform on it, they make a great place to take a sh!t from.

chumbucket 03-01-2012 09:04 AM

Looks a lot like some of the early Scout skiffs.

I think since you already have the Stinky Hooker, this one should appropriately be named; The Filthy Oar.

Destroyer 03-01-2012 10:48 AM

Well, since you're rebuilding her and making her stronger you can always call her the "Stiff Skiff"

Stinky Hooklet

Stinky_Hooker 03-01-2012 01:02 PM

The filthy Oar...LOVE IT!

Gonna file that one in my mind for consideration. :sun:

Mulv80 03-01-2012 02:56 PM

Stink,

A friend of mine had one growing up. He ran a 1974 Evinrude 15 hp on it and it was faster than my 12' Sea Nymph with a 9.9 by a large margin. I have a 14' Gamefisher that was produced by MFG under the Adventurer name. MFG made some cool little boats back in the day, good luck with it.

Stinky_Hooker 03-02-2012 09:56 AM

Thanks Mulv!

Got a little glassing done on the first piece of floor yesterday

Stinky:

Ever considering putting a center console in it? I have one that you could have that would be a perfect size (its small) if your interested.

Kamikaze

Stinky_Hooker 03-05-2012 11:20 AM

Kamakazi, thanks for the offer. I thought it over before coming up with a plan. I am going to stick with the cooler/grab bar combo and tiller extension instead to save some room. I want it to be open as possible with it being so small. Also, all the places I plan on using it are less than a mile running from spot to spot.

Thanks again though for your offer!

Got some more glass done and another section of floor started this weekend.

I also glue up and built a couple new knee braces for the transom out of some mahogany I had. They are way beefier than the old ones.

reelapeelin 03-05-2012 11:45 AM

Stink, that's lookin GREAT!!...you like me about the console...when I had that size (wish I still did) I would have passed on console as well...gimme a tiller and all the room it leaves....

Stinky_Hooker 03-06-2012 01:56 PM

Thanks RAP!

Added some "meat" to the bow for the new bow eye:

Floor roughed in:

Stinky_Hooker 03-07-2012 07:56 PM

It's coming together...slowly but surely...

Blue_Runner 03-08-2012 10:14 AM

Nothing slow about it if you ask me! You're making short work of it. Like those gunnel rod holders. :hide:

Stinky_Hooker 03-09-2012 09:03 AM

Got the top cap mocked up...next I will flip it over and glass all the underneath before attaching it to the hull.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/IMAG0128.jpg

Stinky_Hooker 03-09-2012 10:31 AM

So far my math is telling me Ive added roughly 190lbs of weight in wood not counting glass materials. Deduct say 50 for the old floor and seats from the original 215 and im still in the neighborhood of 350-360ish without the front deck. By the time its done Im guessing Ill be in the 450+ range. Not terrible but Im trying to stay light as possible. I do believe the weight will add stability and ride quality to the lil guy though. We shall see.

randlemanboater 03-09-2012 11:11 AM

From here you could easlily go full on flats boat if you wanted...but it would be much heavier.

Its really looking good!

Stinky_Hooker 03-09-2012 12:46 PM

Thanks!

My plan is a font deck about 3" below the rail going back 38" or so. Still have to cut in the back hatch and work on that. Going to do a removeable stainless pedestal and seat up front so I can pull it off for gigging flounder from the front. Also batteries up front, recessed cleats, shark eye bow lights, etc...

Anyone seen any of the shark eyes in LED for a reasonable price?

steplift20 03-10-2012 08:54 AM

born again ----thats what you should call her

Kracker Jack 03-10-2012 06:46 PM

Stinky, I'm gonna be doing my cap the exact same way. I'm gonna glass the bottom the glue and screw the cap down then glass 1708 over the whole shootin making it one piece.

fishingwithblue 03-10-2012 08:35 PM

That thing is looking awesome, more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RidgeRunner 03-13-2012 08:25 AM

Crazy fast work. I love it.

Stinky_Hooker 03-13-2012 09:12 AM

Thanks guys! Got the top flipped and working on getting it all glassed and waterproofed on the underside before it gets joined to the hull permanently.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/IMAG0129.jpg

Theres alot more done than this photo shows, took this Friday afternoon. Tons of rain this past weekend so it sure was nice having her in the shop to work. :bat:

Destroyer 03-13-2012 09:40 AM

Looking good Stinky...looking good.

Road King Cole 03-15-2012 10:52 AM

Look'n Good!

Stinky_Hooker 03-22-2012 09:42 AM

Few more things done in the midst of a busy weekend/week.

Got the top outside after getting the underside all glassed up. I got some highspots ground down ( I LOVE grinding glass) and a final coat of resin over everything.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...IMAG0155-1.jpg

I dug out some leftover urethane I had to get it coated:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...IMAG0156-1.jpg

After 3 coats, she's all good and sealed now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/IMAG0158.jpg

Mocking up where the drain will go to drain water from the deck to the bilge and bypass the dry storage in the rear. I also painted the front floor area with some leftover already mixed paint. Aesthetically that area wont matter due to being covered by a front deck and used for storage. The rest of the floor will be slicked and faired out.

Frank approves and wants to go for a boat ride:

Stinky_Hooker 03-23-2012 07:47 AM

Got the front deck mocked up yesterday. I also did some glassing in the rear on the knee braces at the transom.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/IMAG0162.jpg

Today Im going to try and get the front wall patterned out and cut to attach to the deck.

I went ahead and clamped it down to get the small "bow" out of it and glassed the underside.

tsubaki 05-01-2012 04:40 PM

Looks good Stink!
Got any ideas for fish stickin with that thing yet?

bgreene 05-02-2012 03:55 AM

Great work - I suggest adding a tower and rigging it for offshore fishing !

Build in a larger fuel tank mounted in the center, and put a 40 hp on it.

Then add outriggers and go with one fighting chair.

Finally, name it " Battlewagon "

Am I getting carried away ?
