making own marine fairing compound?
 

Can someone kinda give me a basic ratio for formulating your own filler out of resin,cabosil and glass bubbles? Thanks fellas

Maybe I will rename this thread. I messed up with my boat lingo. I'm looking to make sandable fairing compound for finishing out my rough glass work. Like using a microballon and cabosil? I don't want to buy pre made stuff. I want to learn to make my own.

wood flour and resin.... the more wood flour the easier it is to sand and the thicker it will be

I use Micro-ballons and a little bit of cabosil. The key to success for me is to push both through a screen first so there will be no clumps when applying.

Yea I'm starting to get excited! I'm building and glassing most of the cap this week end(weather depending) and I'm going to start doing a lot of fairing and Sanding!

Yup....mostly microballoons and some cabosil for sag resistance...but for fairing/not structural fillets...i'd do more of a thick mayo than a peanut butter consistency...this will help spread things out without too many pull streaks...

Yea I have the structual filler down pat! I even keep scrap cloth so i can chop it up and add to my cabosil and resin, its strong as all get out. I kinda knew how to make the homemade fairing compound but didnt know ratio( I didn't want to make it to "lite") thanks for everyone's help.

Should I switch to a vinylester resin to make my fairing compound? Or stick with poly?

What am I doing wrong? My fairing conpound seems to pulling like its gritty? Its not creamy at all and pulls real rough. Am I adding to much micro ballons? Im mixing the compound to proper consistency using the micro ballons and not using cabosil at all. Should I use cabosil to thicken a little and then add the micro ballons to finish thickening to my consitency? Thanks fellas!!!:head:

this may sound crazy but Poly resin mixed with bondo filler will work too. i've used bondo added to my resin with no bondo hardner just little extra resin hardner.

try either 3:1 or 4:1 ratio MB to Cabosil

Bondo is poly based correct?
