Deep River Pan Fishin

Last Thursday the kids got out of school at 1230. *I picked them up and we drove through Micky D's and Taco Bell, then went to the park next to Deep River for a little "beginning of summer" picnic.

The park is about a 1/4 mile down the street from the house and the walking trail to get there is about 200 yards from the house.

Anyway, my son always scans any body of water he is near for signs of fish, Thursday he discovered the bluegills on beds in the river.

Over the next 3 days he mentioned it anytime we had a slow moment so this evening we stole away in the 14 ft jon boat and snagged a few.

There are some largemouth bass in the river but we usually target the bluegill, shellcracker, redear sunfish and the little catfish that are abundant. *

We are the only people that I have ever seen use a boat in the river so we get access to fish the "bankers" can't get to.

We were in the water around 8pm, and done by 9:15 or so. *We caught 16 panfish and one little catfish on ultra lite rods, lots of fun and a few pulls on the drag from the larger ones.

The best part was when we were done and I was all out of breath from dragging the boat up the bank to the truck my son gives me a big hug and says, "thanks for taking me fishing, I love you Dad."

Life is good.

Joey with a decent one.

We don't use corks, the deepest part of deep river is about 4 feet. We use #6 gold aberdeen hooks with the barb mashed down for easy C&R, and one or two bb split shot.

The "worms" were Gulp earthworms and they worked great, first time using them.

BR, that is one of the narrow "pond" jonboats, no good for anything other than sitting down in calm water.

SEAN, It is a very peaceful place, we saw 4 river otters, an owl of some sort, watched a large spider wrap up a bug he caught, ducks and geese were flying over, all within sight of the Main St. bridge.

RB enjoy it, they grow up way too fast. My boys are 21 and 25 and probably only fish with me one time a year. Billy Mac ;D

Ditto what Mac says, they do grow up so fast. Seems like only yesterday my son Ben was a young lad like your son Randleman. We did everything together and now he is stationed in England and wont be home for another 3 years :'(

Thats good to hear. I use Gulp for trout and flounder, but havent tried the freshwater stuff yet. As soon as I get the trolling motor mounted on the Hooker Im going bream fishing and Ill give that a try. *8)
