Old Pinstriping

Anyone have a good way to remove old pinstripping? Or should I ask, is there an easy way to remove pinstriping? Heat gun, blow dryer, chemicals to use???

thanks in advance

If you have a harbor freght near where you live they have a electric heated razor scraper for a few bucks.I bought and Imo it's worth every penny I spent on it

or a heat gun and scraper..even a hair dryer. The electric scraper sound cool though.

If you are talking about vinyl striping then the 3M magic eraser is the SHIZNIT YO!

It's a gum rubber wheel you chuck up in a drill... It rubs the stripe off without hurting the surface below.... It takes the glue off to. I have also used a heat gun but often they leave the glue residue behind which is not much easier to remove than the tape.

I tried all sorts of stuff but nothing compares to the 3M product above.

Thanks boys. So many choices. I will let you know how it goes.

By the way, does anyone know a where I might get the replacement pinstriping and V20 designation? Or am i stuck just re-doing the pinstriping with something off the shelf.

A decent sign shop can make you anything you want.

Thanks Kevin. I'm going to try that wheel. Never heard of it before, but went online and everyone raves about them.

Sort thru the Links section of this forum...for decals...and Smoke's right about some sign shops being able to replicate stripes, logos etc...

Some good suggestions here, heated razor and 3M unit sound interesting...careful w/the heat gun...WILL melt gel coat if allowed to get too hot...I'm facing the same situation w/my '84...stripes are off, but the adhesive is proving to be a REEL beeyatch!!...:cen:

I had one like that and I rubbed flour in the adhesive and used the wheel on it.... worked fairly well

Plain or Self Rising??...what the hell made you think to rub flour into it...:head:...this I GOTTA try!!...

White..:butt:

My first thought was dirt but I figured it might scratch the gelcoat.... I figured flour was fine enough to not hurt anything while "drying" the dang goo that otherwise just wants to make a mess.... I have also just sprayed with wd40 and used a plastic scraper but it never really seemed to get it all off.

The 3m wheel does the job, but makes a mess.

I strip the old stripes off with a heat gun and a plastic razor and then clean the gum off with Brake Clean on a towel--works well--in fact real well.

Now remember--after that striping being on there for 20+ years there is going to be a shiney and probabley raised portion of the gelcoat that has been protected all these years. A great Buff out and wax will help hide this--but it will always be there unless you restripe the same area.

Just my .02

or wet sand the whole thing:oh:

i've removed the decaling & pin striping from mine by using a heatgun first, the using adhesive remover and a towel to remove the left over redisue.

hmmm if it didn't work, at least you could spray it with vinegar for some entertainment... lol

that said baking soda just might be good.... mildly abrasive but uniform and fine enough to polish instead of gouging.... worth a try

stripes

i just did mine with a heat gun and a razor, the big stripes are easy the little ones are a little tougher but you'l get a system down after a little while. and Reel, acetone takes that glue rite off with ease
