what ya think about these motors?
a 1978 115 evinrude , 130 psi on each cylinder..rebuilt stater..rebuilt carbs..new fuel lines, pump and solenoid,impellor.. $450 with all controls...guy says it was his old neighbors and sat for years unused till he got it and went through it.....20min drive from me...
next one i'll just quote his email "I have a 1979 Johnson V4 115 Seahorse (Model 115TL79) that is currently on my old glastron bass boat, that has a rotten floor. I am the second owner and have had the boat and motor for over 10 years. I have only used this about 10 times in the last 10 years (truly !) and have stored it in a carport the last 8. The unit comes complete with tilt/trim, stainless prop, stablizer fins, aluminum spare prop, and all controls, service manual and parts catalog. The motor still runs like a bat outta hell. It shifts well and bottom end is fine. Oil is very clean. I have skied behind it and it takes my boat to 47 MPH. The boat is classic and salvagable, but I don't have the time anymore. The trailer is a very sturdy Vanson I beam type, original to the boat and in good condition, with good bearings and Bearing Buddies, but may need tires. Boat and trailer each have current titles in my name. I am looking to sell the entire package to someone like yourself, who can benefit from a solid low-hour motor. I had it running just last weekend with muffs. Compression betwen 118 and 125 lbs in each cylinder. Looking to get a $1000. Bring your truck and tow it home." i'm thinking i could maybe get a couple hundred bucks for the boat and trailer and maybe offset the price alil... and this one is a 2hr drive from me...second email he said he could take me out on the lake for a test ride in it..if i wanted.. i'm trying to get back on the water again for as cheap as possible lol what ya think is better deal? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
For the money I dont think you could go wrong bro. You should easily be able to get your money back out of it if its doesnt prove as dependable as you would like.
I am interested in the performance of your boat with a V4 on it if you do get it. Im thinking V6 on mine next, but am not closed to a good OMC V4 if itll do what Id like it to do. 8) |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Stink, I'd seriously reconsider a V6 on your 18 if you're going bracket, she'll be sittin pretty low, keep it light IMO ;)
Do you have a bracket yet, does it add flotaion? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
go for it and see what happens??
Were are you located?? If you don't go for the $450 motor let me know. I would hate to put a 115 on my V20 but it would get me out. Now just to see were you are and if some how I can get the cash? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Kajun,
Your boat is perfect for a 130-135 hp V4 Yamaha or similar engine. I've talked to guys that were very happy with them on the 18' Wellcraft. Remember in about 1985 the boating industry started to rate engines at the prop rather than the powerhead. If you install an older V6 (150 hp) that's a powerhead rating. If you install a little newer V4 it'll be rated at the prop. With the V4 you'll have less weight without sacrificing much performance. Just my $.02 |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
I have the bracket...no flotation and has a platform. Da boat is rated for a 150, of course that in stock configuration too. I have thought long and hard on it and still havent made up my mind. My only reason for considering a 6 (150 of course) is that I am going to add the bracket, a Leaning post and a t-top. I just want enough grunt to push all this crap around on an already pretty heavy lil boat. :P
Lets hear some thoughts on this. The facts: My scuppers are just above water level. Even too low with two big lads fishin in the back. This is partly due to a big icechest (always full of ice) in the back. That is moving and a lighter/smaller leaning post will be installed there. I also plan on having to glass the scuppers in with this bracket install. Would it be accurate to assume I am getting 85-90 horses out of the 96 120 Force? What does my Force weigh? If thats the case then a fresh 120 or 130 V4 would be a good step up and enough to push me well? I dont have to do mach 3 or nuthin I just dont wanna bog in heavy seas while heavy loaded. How much heavier is a V6 than a V4? Lets hear it!!!! EDIT: I weigh 205. I can sit ON my Force and the boat doesnt draft any additional worth considering because it is so wide. It handles the added weight well. The 18 is actually wider than my V20 was....I had them side by side for comparison before. Certainly a V6 is no more than 200ish pounds heavier huh? *:o |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Even putting your Force on a bracket will make the boat sit lower some due to it being further back.
IMO I'm not sure a bracket on an 18'er is the way to go, but WTF do I know ??? :) according to NADA your Force weighs 303 lbs. When you were sitting on the motor was anyone else in boat? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
What's the deal with your transom now? 20"? Solid?
Glassing over the scuppers, no longer self bailing?! :-/ Do you have a problem with water coming over transom now? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?

This guy disagrees. ;D http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...IM000031_4.jpg This is the one I seen that made me wanna go bracket. Yes a buddy was in the boat...the back. Quote:
20" notched transom now and no problem with water over the rear. I just want the space and other advantages of the bracket. :) I dont like the no self bailing either, but dont think Ill have a choice. If I put in the full transom with a livewell in the back itll make this boat exactly what I need. 8) I also always have a 72qt cooler in the back full of water and live baits. This doesnt help either, but will offset the addition of the livewell. Well I mean it tells me already what ive lost...I mean Ive already lost that freeboard so no additional will be lost..I mean...Hell you know what I mean!! ;D |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Seacrets said it right. The pre-86 115hp is more like a 90hp at the prop. Its a good buy no doubt if all checks out but I doubt either will push your V20 very fast. But you don't have too much to lose right? :-/ Have you put any consideration at all into putting both of them on there? :o ;D ;D ;D Help me out here Skools 8) ;D
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Sorry for the hijack Kajun, maybe you will learn somthin through all this. ;D
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
P.S. I think a V4 would be enough Stink. I gotta go with Seacrets on that too. A yamaha 130 would look good on that bracket. ;)
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Cool, one vote for a Yammiehammer 130...NEXT? ;D
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
A light 150 hp will weigh approx. 375 lbs. I just installed a newer (2000) 150 on my V20 and it weighs 407 lbs. I would really be concerned with no flotation in the bracket. I think you'll really squat the stern. Just a thought.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Seacrets...you mean with a 150 on it or a bracket at all.
I seen this same boat (above picture) in the water a little later in the day and it ran beautifully. Im not worried about it not working, or squating it "too much" I know itll work because it worked for him. These 18s are really stout lil boat to be what they are. :) Maybe put some two part foam in the bracket? How would I do that? After I bolt it all up? Then I would have to dig it out for a motor swap down the road..right? |

Re: what ya think about these motors?
Yeah I apreciate the input and Im not at all mad.
Just wanted to know what Seacrets meant. I value all kinds of input. *8) I seen it coming in the harbor later that day and actually towed him in as he broke down about 200yards from the dock. *::) True be it I was out in a chop in the boat so i dont know the detail of how it handles at sea, but judging from mine I cant see where its gonna hurt me that much. Some numbers I found.. 2006 models Johnson V4=335lbs V6=391 I cant help but feel a good V4 compared to what i have will be plenty of motor, but the weight difference between a 4 and 6 is nothing. I have taken dumps that weight more than that. I know these are newer (maybe lighter) motors, but my plan is to repower with a 99ish or later outboard anyway or a completely rebuilt early-mid 90s *model. A shop here in Mobile will build me an ALL NEW V4 for around 2100 r a V6 for around 25. (they supply motor) I have had work done there before and they are great people. Also, my buddy just *bought a 150 V6 built by them for his ski boat and loves it. They did all new internal and electronic parts and repainted it as well. They stand by their work and warranty too. I think thats a pretty good price for a "new" motor with a warranty. ? onward....I have both batteries in the back port hatch and I keep my shrimp trawl in the starboard one so that adds some poundage too. I am thinking about moving the batteries to under the console? Thatll ditch at least 100lbs and the ice chest up front will make a BIG difference as I have had it there before and loved it. How much does a stainless bracket with platform weigh? I know it weighs enough that I dont like moving it around. *::) at least 100-150lbs? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Kajun,
Pick up a trading post you will often find deals on yamahas and newer evinrudes in the local area. Most of the time without controls. But budget boats has almost everything that you will need. If I bought the boat I would have put my 70hp evinrude on it and called it a day. I 70hp outboard will give you over 20mph everyday. *If you buy an outboard that is too old parts will be hard to find. You don't want to be stuck with another pile of junk. Stay away johnson and evinrude with the eletric shift. Last year I found a 1993 85hp yamaha for $400 with everything included only used in freshwaster on a pontoon boat. Good Luck |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
I was thinking Kajun had a V20, but I guess its an 18? In that case the older johnson V4 115 should be fine. ;D Sorry.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Stink, what I was trying to say, when you move 350-400 lbs. 16-20" further back your boat would sit lower in the water. Don't forget the weight of the bracket itself. Did the bracket boat have scuppers? You mentioned your scuppers were almost in the water. With a bracket w/o flotation to compensate for the weight located further to the rear I would think, they'll be underwater. When you were adding your weight to your motor, you and your motor were on the transom, not behind the transom. These are just my thoughts. About a year ago, I looked at an 18 bracket w/o a motor installed. I called Wellcraft and they advised against it. Their first question was, "How far is the setback"? I like the 18's as much as the 20's and I like the bracket idea for both models. If anybody on this forum can make it work it would be you. Good luck.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
so what ya'll think the 78 115 evinrude for $400 or the 79 115 johnson for $1000?.....deshet i'll keep my eye out for something newer but i'm just not finding any...i would rather a mid 80's to mid 90's motor but there is none to be had around here.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Both for 1400 - get a cheap set of omc dual controls and a steering link are - oh crap thats right its an 18 not a 20 :-X
Seriosly, I guess it depends on how they look. Does the one for $1000 look $600 better? If not, buy the $400. |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Hey Kajun, try Florida Sportsman magazine online. Go to boat store and click on motors. Also go to their forum section and click on announcements.

Re: what ya think about these motors?
Seacrets,
I dont think the other one had scuppers, there is just no way. MAN I wish I would have gotten his phone number!!!! I would like to take a ride in it and see how it performs. :-/ Here is another pic.... http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...IM000033_4.jpg I dont see scuppers, but you never know for sure..... Oh and Im not talkin about a little bracket, the one I have is a full 29" setback just like this one. :o Here is the deal....Im just a dumb redneck. The thing is either gonna sink or float.....Ill do the bracket, pay up on my insurance and launch the sucker!!! 8) I wouldnt be so hellbent on it, except I REALLY want a full transom with a nice livewell in it and a spacious cockpit. ;D I might pour a yard a concrete into the anchor hatch...thatll correct my problems!! :D |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Kajun, there is an outboard place Skools sent me the link to awhile back..I lost it...anyways, he buys motors from em and they have em for incredibly good prices.
PM him and get it....its up in North GA I think....near him. ;) on the motor decision......that 79 would have to look some kinda good for me to come off odd another 600 bones for a one year newer motor. I say jump on the 78 and throw some paint on it later if its worth keepin...either way you aint out much. For 400 bucks you can get SeaTow too and have em tow you home each return trip to port! :D Heck it may run for 10 years and be the best motor you ever owned. 8) |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Stink - IF you can see the numbers on his boat you can get his name....and with the name get the phone number. So, got #'s?
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
:o
Oooo, hang on lemme check the other pics.....BRB |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
I THINK I got em...what now?
CG, MP, will they just give me info like that? AL-6622 FL or PL...cant make that out for sure. Oh and the 6622 could be a 662Z or a 6822 or 2Z. Wow when i look back on all that, I aint got shet do I? ;D |

Re: what ya think about these motors?
A bracket's a great place to pee. You might want to check the weight of the sea drive model on the 18.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
I didnt know they came with one. :-/
That would be interested. ;D On the peeing thing, I totally agree. I look forward to that as well as a place to work my shrimp net more easily. 8) DANG with all this talk about it, Im ready to go snatch my friggin motor off tonight!!! :D |

--------------------------------------------------------------------- A 1990 120hp force weighs 300# thats total 425# hanging off the back ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The boat in the pictured looked good cause it has floation!! The one you say you have has none, so its going to sit much lower with out the floation! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Get the plastic scuppers with the ball in it and that will stop the water from backing up?? |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
OK next question.
What about adding flotation to mine? It has a 6" access hole for mounting and such. I also cant see where a little flotation in that small bracket housing will be that bigga deal. :-/ Especially with all the foam in my boat, especially the transom. I guess every little bit helps though. Here is a pic of my bracket. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com.../Brackett3.jpg |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
well the guy sold the $400 motor from under me :( but i got a lead on a possible 86' 110 evinrude...

Stinky, go into www.wellcraft.com and click on 1986 and the 18 fisherman. You'll see a picture of an 18 w/sea drive.
|
Re: what ya think about these motors?
Hay Stink
I think I have followed this thread but maybe I missed something? If your bracket were sealed to the transom than you would already have the max. Flotation from the "box" on your bracket that is filled with air. Putting foam inside would not increase the flotation unless the water seal was compromised. As you were pointing out about the beam of the 18, it is not just a scaled down V20 like my V17 is, It was designed to be an 18’ boat. I have a friend with a V18 and he rebuilt the transom and installed a 155hp Evinrude outboard on the transom. It will run around 50mph but now he wishes he had installed a 130 or 140 that was lighter due to handling. As far as the effects of a bracket on a 18’ boat, I think any effects in performance are really more dependent on the boats weight (the more it weighs the more possible improvement) not the length as long as it can handle the weight shift involved. I agree that any info from the seadrive installations in the past would be helpful. They have close to the same setback as a smaller bracket with no flotation. A 1.6 liter seadrive V4 weighed about 385lb, the 1.6 standard 1.6 outboard =310lb. With my 17, I can understand the importance of "More space" the bracket will give you! My $ .02 |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
MJ, all I can say is DOH!!!! *I was thinking too hard and didnt realize air=flotation. *::) Thanks man!!!! *8)
Seacrets, I checked it out...cool deal. Ill bet the guy that I met (pics above) was a seadrive. His transom looked factory. Pikfish- thanks for the imput man, I really appreciate it. OK, I think Ill be going with a V4. Itll be less immediate expense, less weight, less maintenance (two more spark plugs, hey wow!) and probably not much of a performance loss. If I werent going bracket I would definitely jump to a 150, but not on the bracket, Ive got enough variables with this swap to worry about w/o that. 8) BUT, I hope my Force runs for 80 more years and I dont have to worry about it. ::) |
Re: what ya think about these motors?
The thing with the old Sea drive set up is they kept it real close to the boat as not to hang way back and have that more leverage.
A sea drive kind of went up and out when you tilted the motor up. The way we are doing it you have to put the weight further away from the boat to have room for the power head to come up when tilting. There for making more weight further from the boat giving it more lea verge on the transom. I also agree you will gain nothing by adding foam to the bracket. The air tight pocket in the bracket is all you need. |
