GOOD NIGHT, Irene!!

Looks like Irene gonna be on Garage's doorstep...Lee..you got the Hurricane Party scheduled for Sun 2 a.m.??...

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...daynl#contents

And then looks like Irene's gonna roll right up Barnegat Bay...Might change some things around a bit up there...hope she's at least down to a Cat.1 by then...

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...daynl#contents

Capt Pete...looks like yer gonna be right busy this week gettin' all ready...and next week straightenin' everything out...wear you track shoes!!...are ya'll pullin' boats outta the water?...

reelapeelin 08-25-2011 11:34 AM

NJ Guys..I just saw a "cone" predicting the center of Irene would come just inland of the coast...that ain't good...I made a lotta good friends up there and and don't wanna be readin' ABOUT any of you...

Heads up...these things don't mess around...and if the authorities even SUGGEST evacuating, don't be a HAMMERHEAD...get the hell out...come here if ya wanna, but even a Cat. 1 is a pretty serious blow...and can push up a pretty good tidal surge...

Damn...I starting to sound like Destroyer...Aw sshhhooooot!!!...

Let's hope she dies down to a TS and you only get winds <70 mph and torrents of rain...

Jersey Jeff 08-25-2011 03:41 PM

I'll be pulling the boat tomorrow, Hurricane party at my house, about 25miles inland!

BRIELLY 08-25-2011 03:59 PM

I went from getting extra lines and tying it up good to now having it pulled out and secured (hopefuly well) with the forecast change from yesterday. Unfortunately it looks like an astonomically high tide will coincide with the storm making things that much worse. On a brighter note I did find out that boat US pays for some of your haul out costs. Stay safe everyone!

SkunkBoat 08-25-2011 05:56 PM

Not a problem...just an oppurtunity to powerwash the hull before the fall striper run

Jersey Jeff 08-25-2011 06:01 PM

I just pulled it and gave her a good once over last week!

Today alone we pulled over 30 boats. With as least that much to do tomorrow. Luckily our house is on high ground. I am pulling SpongeBob though. This storm is without a doubt keeping me busy. I will post more salvage pics as I get them.

you might say i live on a sandbar. long beach is a barrier beach along the south shore of western long island. you can see it on the map. we are around 1/4 mile wide at our widest and i guess about 2 feet above sea level at our highest.
irene will be joining us on sunday and her projected course will bring her right across our bow. my brother in law is a bit south of here and said we got some 40 foot surf coming our way.
oh well....... if we dont lose power i'll be able to pump out the basement, which is below sea level. if not..... well i dont know. i guess i'll just wait it out.
aint got no plans on leaving but that may change if i feel like my family is in any danger. i'll keep ya'll posted.

LoL.. there's hope for you yet Reel!!

Update as of 3am Friday.. looks like it's going to hit Cape May with the eye, and then come right up the coast. For NJ that's actually good. It spins anti-clockwise. They are figuring 75 mph wiinds and moving northward @ about 20 mph, so anything to the east of the eye will be getting 95+ mph winds (75 spin plus 20 forward movement) Anyone to the west of the eye will be getting 55 mph winds (75 spin minus 20 forward) So it looks like Long Island & NYC will get the brunt of the winds/rain. NJ will get a ton of rain and lots of flooding, but not as severe with the winds. In all cases it's def time to batten down the hatches. I'm moving my boats to an open field where no falling trees can crush them...
Ditto with my vehicles. We have plenty of food, water, tarps, candles, propane for camp stove, fuel for Coleman lamps, 10 gals gas for the generator. All 3 chainsaws ready and tested.. I think we're about as ready as we can be.. Still, I don't have a good feeling about this one.
Good luck to everyone that's going to be effected by this. God bless and stay safe!!

reelapeelin 08-26-2011 06:18 AM

CTT only 2' above sea level doesn't sound like much...I am hearing surge of up to 14' when it comes ashore...had no idea LI was no more of a hill than that...don't wait til the last minute...my inlaws couldn't get outta freakin' Houston recently and LI has even fewer escape options...and if the eye goes to your west, the east side of this storm will hit the sandbar yer on like a boxer's punch...wind, rain AND tidal surge...

W/all the heavy rainfall soaking the ground, there ARE gonna be widespread power outages when the trees start falling on power lines...and peeps blocked in when roads are blocked...glad to hear you got your saws ready, Destroyer...hope you all do...

GarageNC is right in this things cross-hairs down on NC's coast...come on down here TODAY, Lee...we got plenty of room...

MJ, CB and guys to the north, hopefully it will have subsided somewhat by the time it reaches you, but I keep remembering Hugo had sustained winds of 90 mph when it hit Charlotte NC 200+ miles inland, so dig in guys and be ready for the power being out...

I'll be thinking about all of you...not gonna be a typical weekend for you..

Road King Cole 08-26-2011 08:54 AM

I remember the last big scare we had for a hurricane.

Here is a picture of the devastation it had:

http://www.grist.org/i/assets/earthquake_devastation

Let's hope we only have similar damage.

Although I will be ready...got gas for the generator and plenty of beer. Just glad I no longer have to pull the sailboat from the mooring...

Stay safe!

smkinnan 08-26-2011 09:55 AM

yeah guys....I'm sure all of you are taking the proper pre-cautions for the storm but be clear....these things DON'T PLAY!!!!! We have been through some really bad ones in the past down here. The size and magnitude of the storm is the most amazing thing. We have been some 400-500 from the eye as this thing passed us over the last 24 hours. Yesterday I drove home in some of the worst rain storms I've seen in a while. Thats just from the bands of rain that extended out from the storm.

Remember, when they talked about 75 mph winds (or greater). Those are sustained winds. The wear things down over time. Also, gusts for 75mph winds will usually be around 95mph. If you are able to get out of the way of a direct hit (if your in the area where the eye is going to hit), please do. Don't take any chances. As somebody else said earlier in this post, the flooding can be the worst of it. If you know of places that have standing water after it rains normally, imagine those areas with 10"+ of water.

On the positive side of things, this storm has pulled the weather away from us making for a really awesome chance to do some fishing this weekend :hi:

Hedge 08-26-2011 02:40 PM

we are just starting to get the first rains and a few wind gusts from the outer bands, nothing like what our northern friends are in for. Stay safe everyone.

RidgeRunner 08-26-2011 02:53 PM

Lawn chair pushed on its side. LOL priceless..
Been in FL all my life. Hurricanes were always a time for us kids to play in the rain and have fun because they would blow themselves out and reduce in strength prior to making it this far inland. (54 feet of elevation so no storm surge)
BUT - Charlie got my attention, then Gene, then Francis. All in one year. They criss-crossed Florida and all three centers came within 20 miles of the house. We are 100 miles from where Charlie made landfall and it was still a CAT2 when it hit Polk County. Don't play around. Gusts of 100 and sustained at 75 is more than your average squall. I thought we were gonna loose the roof on our CBS home. Lost a part of the fence. Debris field from loss of fence wiped out my neighbors pool enclosure 2 houses down. No power for 4 days. 6000 watt generator at the ready but didn't count on having to use the Alabama credit card to extract fuel from the Tahoe to make it run. Only had two 5 gal cans which was good for about 10 hours of runtime. Electric water heaters keep the stored water hot for 3 days if used sparingly. Oppressive heat on top of that made for some miserable living with the wife and youngin. Used the generator to power the Fridge, Freezer, run ceiling fans, lights, dish and TV. Not enough to run the A/C. Propane and charcoal is your best friend. Water and canned goods are a must have.
Things can be replaced/rebuilt. Get out of the direct path of the storm. CTT this means you.

I just got this e-mail from a friend. I love the signature line. The extra mile, go there often, lonely place.

Subject: FUEL

NOTE ***8211; 4 OF THE MAJOR US FUEL REFINERIES ARE SCHUDULED TO SHUT DOWN IN THE NEXT 3 HOURS. 2 ADDITIONAL REFINERIES HAVE SHUT DOWN ALREADY. IT MIGHT BE A GOOD THING TO FILL YOUR CARS UP BEFORE THE PRICES RISE. DEPENDING ON THE DAMAGE, IF ANY, IT USUALLY TAKES A FUEL REFINERY 1 WEEK TO START UP AND START PROCESSING FUEL AGAIN.

The ***8220;Extra Mile***8221; has no traffic jams.

Funny you mentioned that!!!! Last time we had to evac., I filled my Wellcraft uup. Figured while that line at the gas pump was a mile long I would have a cold beer and let a siphon hose do the work. God Bless a Wellcraft!!!!!

Oh, and don't be like the jackass's I came across in the river who took all day to anchor their sailboat up. I was putterin by in 3' swells in my jon boat(on the way to pull out) and asked the sailboat crew if they had everything they needed. They said "Yep, just finishin up!!" I asked if they had someone comin to pick them up and you guessed it, "Uhhhhh, no. Guess we forgot that part....." I had to give them a ride back to the docks just in time for 30-35kt gusts and me to have to haul azz 30' up into the marsh to avoid gettin swamped to make the 3mi run to the ramp. This was before cell phones and my ramp buddy(Dad) was pissed to say the least I was 1hr late. He thought I capsized. He asked me where I dropped them off at, we went back there to their dock, I could hear the screamin from the car:clap:

Moral of the story: Be prepared!!

garagenc 08-26-2011 06:00 PM

Haven't been on lately, been real busy rushing to get all our yards mowed. Started Wednesday finished today cut a total of 70 acres.

I've had 2 of my tractors and my Bobcat building Berms around homes and business's, working round the clock. Finished all the places we had.

I'm smiling, I'm gonna be like the plastic surgeons who put implants in women and then everyone found out they are bad for their health and had them removed and replace with the new stuff.

Pay me to put them, pay me to take them out!! MONEY MONEY!!!:sun::beer:

We're all buttoned up and have things tied down. Boats out of the water and in garages. Had the big propane tank filled so the whole home generator (15K) shouldn't run out.

Able to talk Mom and Dad to go to Raleigh and stay with my daughter. Our daughter-in-law and grandson coming over here to stay with us.
So were committed to stay.

P/s Fema called and told us to leave and not to call 911 after 3pm tomorrow because they wouldn't be able to respond to us. Don't understand that but then WHO UNDERSTANDS GOVT????

Mr. Krinkle was hoping for a quiet weekend with some glow sticks and the main muff but doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Man I don't want to be the one to tell him!! :bat::fight:

Hedge 08-26-2011 06:24 PM

phatdaddy 08-26-2011 07:01 PM

i always use the v for a 60 gallon storage tank. have 2 gensets, one for the house lights and one for the window units in bed rooms. gas stove and gas hotwater, so we're in pretty good shape, hadn't needed it it a couple of years, but got it ready.

garage, couple of years ago we had a state rep get on tv and announce if you haven't left by noon, write your name on a piece of paper and put it in your pocket so they could id the body. i'd rather die in my living room than stuck in a car on I-10.
you guys stay safe.

garagenc 08-26-2011 07:26 PM

I'm with you on that P Daddy.

There was a wreck today on the bridge from the outer banks to currituck a family of 4, killed the driver and 1 girl was airlifted to the hospital. They were on their way home due to the mandatory evacuation, if they had stayed 1 would be alive and the other not fighting for her life.

lumberslinger178 08-26-2011 07:27 PM

I'm some what ready

Boarded a couple houses ... prepped my own ,, boats in the driveway ...

Nah....we're in good shape out where I live...I'm 22 miles west of the city....no threat obviously of storm surge and in very hilly terrain so no threat of flooding.....only concern is a couple of BIG *** oak trees on our neighbors property that would waffle my house or boat or garage depending on where it came down if it ever did.... they are healthy as horses so I think its a long shot and not much you can do about that if its gonna happen....gonna all sleep in the basement tomorrow night (we finish our basements up here so its just another floor of the house) just in case....It is going to be interesting to say the least I think....i agree that its going to be like a prolonged nor'easter but I think the fact that there's leaves on the trees as opposd to winter storms is going to make it a whole different experience.....

Got one of our gas welders with electrical outlets for in case the power goes out so we should be pretty cozy.

Hey Lee, looks like we're gonna get hit pretty hard. I'm prepared as I can get, 60 gallons of gas for the three generators, two freezers FULL of vegtables, and all the hatches battened down. I've got plenty of plywood, tarpaper and tarps. We shutdown Nucor while ago and they told me not to come back to start it up till midday Sunday. My buddy's gonna ride it out at his house in Kitty Hawk, hope we all make it through this OK. Another close friend lives in Collington, I'm pretty sure he's gonna stay too. My wife and I took the V out this past Wednesday to the 17 bridge and caught big Whiteperch, Croakers, Catfish and some big crabs. Had a great time, hope to do it again soon. Best of luck to ALL you fellas in this storm!

phatdaddy 08-26-2011 09:59 PM

don't know about a hurricane up north, but down here, the worst part is the day after, sooooo stinking hot. after the storm goes through, the air is just still & saturated.

best part is watching the power transformers blow as the wires arc.

i am more afraid of the tornado's in the feeder bands than the actual storm...

garagenc 08-27-2011 06:49 AM

Yea C hope you do OK glad it has weakened but were still going to go thru the entire hurricane in lieu of the outskirts of one.
Were starting to get it now. Hurricane just made landfall at 7:30am at Wilmington. about 80 miles south of us right at 100mph winds.

Satellite went out, expecting the eye to be here about noon today. Rain started yesterday about 5pm and hasn't stopped yet. Expecting between 9-14 inches of rain.

Water in my creek is going out hope it stays that way.

We're having gusts now up to 70mph with sustained at 50mph.

I'll try to give reports as it get here until my internet goes out.

Orlando 08-27-2011 07:23 AM

well its supposed to be here today, was already under tornado warning from about 3:30am till about 5 am dont think its gonna do squat. just like flloyd and isabelle, that nor'easter did more damage then both of them put together. its already supposed to be down to 80mph sustained by the time it reaches here. oh well we will see what happens. got gas for the generators and my two year old is stocked up on slim jims "Meat" and yoo-hoo's "woohoooooo" I doubt it will be as bad as alot of the nor'easters you guys up north have had, but better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. sad to say it but maybe this storm is just the flush to obamas economic toilet.

RidgeRunner 08-27-2011 09:17 AM

GarageNC must be getting the worst of it if it was 80 miles south at 7:30. What say you? Over..

garagenc 08-27-2011 09:47 AM

Just went thru the 1st bands of wind and rain but the eye is still about 50 miles south of hatteras. Probably will be getting to us at 2pm. 1 piece of flashing on my garage door came loose I removed it to put back on later. 1 small tree down and a couple more leaning. Wind is pushing the water out of my creek but the ditches are filling with water from the rain. Know more later as the main part gets to us.
