Re: Member Selling
COBURN,
Sell me the bim-enclosure. PLEEEEAAAASE ;D |
Re: Member Selling
yep thats him!!
Got to pull that motor and out drive to replace athat coupler!! Been there done that!! >:( |
Re: Member Selling
What would they charge for that job to have it done MJ, cause it looks like a sweet boat otherwise
|
Re: Member Selling
Have no idea?? I did the job myself,
I added a piece of ply to the floor of the boat, put a engin lift in the boat undid the mounts and removed the out drive. Lifted the motor out right in the boat, and while it was hanging there I swaped out the coupler, thats easy, just mounts to the flywheel. Then you replace the motor and the outdrive and you good to go. Sounds easy but you have to get to all the bolts, and it was bad anough in a stright 6cyl never mind a V8!! Then you have to get lucky that all lines up again, they have a alinement tool to make sure. I was lucky, never had the tool and all was well when it was over! I would say if a mariner was doing it it would cost about 6 hours labore and about $150 for the part? Thats what I payed for the part about 6 years ago. But you can bet that the mariner will eed other parts!! I bet you are looking at $700 to $1000? |
Re: Member Selling
Thats ashame, its a sweat V.
But I'm always willing to take in donations and chairty. :P |
Re: Member Selling
Hammer depends on two things what are you willing to do yourself and if it is done by a mechanic and you get the boat for a sweet price, which I think you will because of the circumstances he is in and the boat needing work it could work out very well for someone
|
Re: Member Selling
MJ, what causes that coupler to go out?... ??? ...
|
Re: Member Selling
Post pics. of the part needing replacing. Surprised you need a special tool to align the engine. Figured you bolt it back down to the motor mounts the same way you do a car engine.

Re: Member Selling
Coburn,
If you donate it to me, you can write it off on your taxes as a charity donation to me. ;D ;D ;D ;D |
Re: Member Selling
The engine coupler is just like a prop hub. The splined shaft to the outdrive slides into it and then it bolts to the engine. They give way with age due to heat. The purpose of the rubber coupler is to keep from breaking the crank if you take a shot to the outdrive.
The motor mounts have some adjustment built into them. If things aren't lined up right you will have virabtion problems and probably wear out gimbal bearings pretty fast. Most times the dealer you buy parts from will let you borrow the alignment tool. It's just an input shaft from the out drive that hasa a handle on it. If it goes through the gimbal bearing into the coupler smoothly then your good to go. Airslot |
Re: Member Selling
YAY!! My boat for sale. Heard alot about that coupler going from engine misalignment and makes sense because the motor was out before I bought the boat (to replace gimbal bearing). Yes the motor could have been dropped in exactly how it came out but what happens is that over time the motor will start to sink in the stringer enough to knock it out of alignment. And being that the coupler is rubber-isolated, it wouldn't take much misalignment of the motor to fail the coupler. And when it happened I was almost home from a 5+ hour trip. At first I thought it went because of age and the heat from the motor but misalignment could be the culprit. who knows, it could have only went because of age but also thinking about an all cast iron 350 with the exhaust manifolds and risers too all sitting on 1989 fiberglassed 2X6's, makes me think the mounts could have settled. Granted the fact that now the boat barely moves, this is only an inexspensive repair thats just R&R rather than rebuilding the motor or outdrive. And in ths boat the motor is fairly accesible compared to other boats where the motor is below floor level. All in all this is a great boat and to hear that 350 roaring as you're doing close to 45mph, it's a great ride! I think it is capable of going faster with a prop change as it has a 21 pitch prop and it the rpms are lower than they should be. I have the reserve on this boat a few thousands dollars than NADA value so somebody is gonna get a nice boat for a good price. <p> I heard of people using just the shaft from the outdrive to use that as an alignment tool. Some say alot about having a "special" tool to align the motor but you could use a spare shaft to align it or if want to go through the trouble of removing the shaft from the outdrive then you clould. I have also heard of using a wooden dowel that has been modified to fit in the splined couple snuggly and the gimbal bearing at the same time. I am a machinist so I would just make one out of an aluminum rod.

Re: Member Selling
Good luck to either way Coburn
|
Re: Member Selling
I still think he could sell it quicker without all that extra weight of the full enclosure. I'm willing to take it off his hands. ;D
|
Re: Member Selling
I think hammer really wants my enclosure. As I previously mentioned, buy the enclosure for $5500 and I'll give you a free boat!
|
Re: Member Selling
Hammer I don't think that is a good deal, unless you take the top and give me the boat, I'll fix it and sell it :)

Re: Member Selling
Lesterus, thanks for that resource. There's some great stuff on that site! We might want to consider including the site in our recommended links...

Re: Member Selling
THE COUPLING GOES BECAUSE OF ENGINE MISALIGNMENT, EVERY TIME YOU REMOVE THE ENGINE OR THE OUTDRIVE, YOU SHOULD CHECK THE ALIGMENT WITH THE ALIGNMENT TOOL, IT NEVER HURS, BECAUSE THE PART ITSELF GOES FOR BETWEEN $150-$250.00 DEPENDING OF WHAT TYPE YOU USE (THERE ARE 2 DIF.
COUPLINGS) HOWEVER THE JOB TO REPLACE IS EXPENSIVE, SORT OF WHEN THE BACKSEAL OF YOUR TRANSMISSION START LEAKING, THE SEAL COSTS $10.00 BUT REPLACING IT COSTS $800.00. HERE'S A TIP, IF YOUR COUPLING EVER GOES WHEN YOU'RE OUT, WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND GET COOL "FRESH" WATER FROM YOUR COOLER AND POUR IT OVER THE COUPLING. WHEN IT COOLS YOU CAN GO AT LOW RPM'S LESTERUS |
Re: Member Selling
Willy,
You should buy the boat and donate the top to me. Its a Cop thing. Right ;D Nice site, but didnt see any enclosures for the bim top. But then again I didnt look to good. Gotta get to work. :'( :'( :'( |

Of course anything is expensive to fix when you pay someone else to fix it. I dont see why anyone on here shouldnt be able to fix it themselves :) I mean we have plenty of knowledgable people to rely on. 8) |
Re: Member Selling
COBURN,
I was hoping that you could show me how to install your enclosure top onto my V-20 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D |
Re: Member Selling
My boat is at just over $1500 with 15 hours left. I hope it goes higher. I think its worth what I am asking even though it needs repair. Well maybe I will have to find the time to fix it and then the time to take it out fishing again before I move. ;D
|
Re: Member Selling
well it'sat $2555 now, with 11hours left so maybe it'll go higher. If not I guess we'll have to start a donation drive for MSBHAMMER so he can get this boat :)
|
Re: Member Selling
Sell the boat to the highest bidder, but without the bim-top and enclosure. Selling the boat and top seperate, you will get closer to the price you wanted. Cash in hand for the enclosure ;D
|
Re: Member Selling
Just shot up to over $3500.00
Thats not a bad price, part out the top to make some extra cash for that trip to Fl. ;D ;D |
Re: Member Selling
Two hours left Coburn.
Pull that top off. ;D |
Re: Member Selling
how much are you willing to pay for the enclosure and bimini?
|
Re: Member Selling
Coburn,
Actually interested in the front and side curtains. My Bim top is new and has zippers. You could keep the top and sell the curtains. Whats the conditions of the curtains. Shoot me a price. |
Re: Member Selling
well the front and aft curtains are less than a year old as they were replaced and the side curtains were the older components. But one fateful day coming back from fishing I left the front and sides on and the one sidecame un snapped and started whipping in the wind and before I stopped it was just enough to crack the brittle plastic. the same thing happened to the other side but not as bad. I broke out with the duct tape and fixed em up. I got a quote to replace both sides at $150, but not something I got around to doing as I only use the enclosure in cold or rainy weather and for now the $0.99 duct is doing a pretty good job lol. But I tell you what this is the first boat I've had with an enclosure and it's awesome. It's amazing how much it helps in the cold especially for the fall striper run in the bay.
|
Re: Member Selling
well my boat didnt go for what I wanted. It ended at $3550. I 've tried selling it locally, craigslist, here, and the bass barn but no takers. I guess I'll have to fix it and try again. And of course take her out for some striper fishing
|
Re: Member Selling
That is your best bet, not many guys want to buy a boat they know has a major ( in their mind ) repair job to be done unless they have a lot of knowledge about it. In our size boats the minority is I/O by a big margin so right off the bat you eliminate a big chunk of your possible bidders. Add to that the fact the engine needs to be pulled to replace a part and even those that would consider an I/O back away. Fix it, add the cost to your price and either fish this fall and sell early spring or try again over winter on the repaired boat.

Re: Member Selling
So most would prefer outboards is what you are saying? I love the simplicity of an outboard but the closed transom is a great plus, fuel economy, noise level, the absence of the smell of a burning two-stroke mix, and knowing I have a 4 bolt main steel cranked small block chevy that roars....i'd rather have an I/O. i know I stated somtething about noise and smell and fuel economy and which a four-stroke outbaord can eliminate but i wouldnt wanna stick one of those heavy suckers off the back of a notched transom...maybe a jack plate since i have an I/O now but i dont think my current setup is gonna cause me enough grief to switch over just yet. maybe if i do keep the boat long enough for the I/O to deteriate to the level of replacing. :)
|
Re: Member Selling
well i guess what i am saying is both have their pros and cons as with anything. at the time i bought the boat i liked the fact it had a v8 I/O just for the sheer power and the motor has low hours and I know what the expectancy is and the motor just looked almost immaculate with not a drop of oil, hint of smoke, or knocks, ticks, taps or anything. As with a 2 stroke per se you really dont know when they are gonna blow except when it happens and i hate the smell of em and the noise. I also know some people who have and had mercruisers and they ran the hell out of em with no problems and are really reliable if you ask me.

Re: Member Selling
What will it take to buy as is. :) :) |
Re: Member Selling
