freakin out
Just want to get on the water.. long way to go.
72 V20. tried the bucket test and pored a 5 gal bucket into back fish well got about 2 1/2 gallons back out. Found small slice type hole under thru hull drain in splashwell. Want to seperate top/sole from hull. Got most of the screws out... Been lookin around and now not sure if the sole/floor is attached to the top? Transom totally rotten. Bottom line want to rebuild transom, check stringers and do a partial repair if necessary, need to reglass the hole by thru hull. Also want to raise the back wall 6 inches and fill in the corners. Have pictures from a previous thread attachmentid=2655&d=1298209 but now can't find it to get a better look. I do have a fork lift. so far jig sawed off the top edge of transom and chain sawed out alot of the old wood. get er done. Help |

There is a guy doing this right now to a Mako on ClassicMako.com, infact I told him about the good luck yall have with the pour-able transom rebuilds here. Here is a link: http://www.classicmako.com/forum/top...TOPIC_ID=38638 How about some pictures?.....and if you are a cheerleader, how about some pictures? |

freakin - cap sep stuff
Thanks to all for the replies!!!
Not sure the best way to respond? To each individually or as a group like this> I have figured out I have a 3 piece hull. The cap is not connected to the sole. If I take off the cap then there may be some thin plywood sides and the hull. Seems to thin to mess with. Now I think I need to get the saw sall out and remove the back 18 inches or so of the floor and see? Would like to make the engine pan area solid from the floor and go up a six more inches... Maybe access doors? Not sure what will happen to the splash well? OMG will have to take a couple pictures. I have recently been on a mind expanding can do anything I open my mind to, tore down a 10hp briggs and stratton, but wood work? PS 53 year old D F thinking of relocating to RI. Megan |
not sure on the 70's hulls. but on the later ones, some have cut the cap at the rear of the rod boxes and the deck to the tank cavity. then removed the splashwell and rear cap. take pics, lotsa pics...

Cap n tanks
Thanks, I will take some pics tomorrow.
Today I took the saddle gas tanks to a radiator guy to get checked out. He said due to liability he could not work on them.. I said I might cry but...... I am going to try the Annapolis marine reclaim guys. |
Megan, I cannot help you with any of the things you're trying to do, other than to tell you that there's a ton of guys here that can. But I can tell you three things that, if you listen to them, will help you a lot.
First, take pictures and post them here so the people that are in the know about these things can see what you're trying to do and offer help to you. (It's true.. a pic is worth a thousand words.) If you're not sure about how to post the pics just ask.. it's really very simple. Second, set your goals for the project. Don't try to do 10 different things at the same time. Concentrate on one item, and keep at that item until it's complete. Otherwise the job will overwhelm you. Third. Step back from the job every few days... give your mind and body a chance to rest and rethink how a particular phase of the job is going..then go watch a movie or whatever. Now, as I recall from my 73, (assuming it's a cuddy cabin type boat you have) you are correct, it's a 3 piece unit. The top cap, the deck, and the hull. The boat is too early a year to have foam under the deck, so no worries there. There should not be any thin plywood anywhere unless someone added it. Your sides don't have rod boxes so no worries there either. That's about it for now, post pics asap so we can see what you've gotten into. |
pictures sep hull 2 or 3 pieces
5 Attachment(s)
attach 003 = exterior transom
attach 002 = transom cross section ( 3 piece hull) attach 004 = interior transom ( would like higher and solid?) attach 031 = splash well drain with leaking thru hull attach 007 = entire splash well Will attach a few more next post. Currently the crux seems to be: Remove cap, remove 2nd skin seperately Remove cap and 2nd skin as a unit? Cut out transom pan, splash well and rebuild (some how need to inspect plumbing from 2 enterior wells to splash well and stringers) |
continued photos

009 = cockpit floor, does this show a seam for floor to sides?
008 = live wells need plumping inspected or plugged 011 = drivers side solid floor 019 = passeingers side slightly soft 1 x 1 sq foot 017 = see fiberglass thru passengers seat hole |
