06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Well, the plan was to be the 1st @ the ramp around 4ish and head to a place were I figured would be holding scup (we were planning on filling the live well and then using them for stripers) and a few Bass @ that. We were the 3rd boat @ the ramp, which isn’t too bad, but the 1st boat was having troubles and the second boat was not ready to load. (I hate when people get ready @ the ramp!!! >:()
We got to our 1st destination a little before 5 and drop lines. 3 pole out with pogie chunks and two fishing for bait. Oh we got bait a ton of “bait fish” but no scup! Nothing but cut cunners, bergals what ever you want to call them… ::) So for the heck of it we filled the well with them, why not, and it was pretty fun catching them. So we staid there until about 8ish, two decent bass in the boat, to 20lbs. OK I lie, one decent bass to @ 20lbs and my tail pincher guppy that came in @ 28.1inches :-/. So we decide to chase a few pods of blues around why we wait for the tide, and wind to pick up so we can start Flukeing. Oh it did, it went from dead calm, to white caps in about 1 hour. Well long story short if we had last years regs. We would have limited out on fluke, but we threw back more 18 inch fluke then you can imagine and managed to bring a couple home for the table. Even with everything that could go wrong, did (well the V ran like a charm  ) it ended up being a pretty fun day. ;D 8) http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oat06-1613.jpg my buddy with his 1st fish on a new rod, and 1st keepers on my boat http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...oat06-1612.jpg |

Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
cool. glad y'all had a good time. one day i gonna catch one of those stripers. when i get my parot wet. thats what i gonna start targeting. nobody fishes them here. but i know we have some. just dont know (yet) how to catch them. state record here is just over 7 pounds! i figure thats my best shot at a state record here.
is a fluke the same as a flounder? tasty little buggers if they are. we can keep them (flounder) at 12" no bag limit. any way, looks like a blast. tx for the pics. |

Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Sean,
We went out yesterday at Point Judith and no keeper fluke whatsoever, all throwbacks between 16/18" >:(. we had a blast nevertheless and between the three of us we must have pulled in 25 shorts. Got into some ugly type fish that had a long tail, two legs, and what looked like ears on them. My buddy said they were skate(sp) ??? but then I thought skate were flat like small stingrays? All I know whatever they were they were uglier then me. LOL |

Looked very similar but the two legs seemed longer, but yes I believe that's what they were, skate. They sure are some ugly fish/creatures |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
They are big in Europe,
they cut them up and eat them. I catch a lot of them from the surf, but I just can't get myself to try one. :P |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Good eatin.
Bloody as hell cleaning. Tastes like scollops. But you need a big one to get any real meat. |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
If you catch a big one two things to keep in mind, first they have a nasty barb on them and will try to imbed it in you so handle with caution, if you have to bring it onboard pin it's nasty tail before trying to dehook. If you are going to eat it, Whack it and later when you go to pick it out of the box don't be surprised if it strikes you. When they are flat on the ground they have a strike like a rattler.
If you want to try something actually pretty good and you have one with some size to it they make a cutter that looks like a sharp strong cookie cutter and you punch out little disks of it and cook em up like a scallop. Had them a few years ago and they were pretty good. The rest of the world prizes them, I can take it or leave it :-/ |

Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Yup, we have a ton of skate up here, there almost as bad as dog fish. I heard people/restraunts used to use cookie cutters on them and serve them as scollops ::)
I keep a few and use them in my lobster pots. We went out last night in my buddys boat, fished real close to the rocks in about 20-30ft of water, and the same seniro as you, Shawsee, a ton of 16-18 inch Fluke, but no keepers, but still fun ;D We ended up picking of a bunch of scup, try brining them out to spot that usual holds stripers and live lined them, but no go on that last night. :-[ but we only had @ the striped one for a 1/2 hour as a guy on the boat decied to tell us that he had to be back to the docks to releive the baby sitter >:( |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Sean,
Tuesday when we were at PJ, we came back into the boat launch area and there was a guy in front of me at the dock. I happened to look in his boat and he had a bunch of doormats laying on the deck. These were some rather large fish so I asked him where did he get them and he said,"Charlestown Breachway" out in front. There was four people on his boat and they all got their limits! Man Sean those fluke were some nice fish and I doubt there wasn't a one that was under 20". So next time I go to PJ that's where I am heading for sure. Will let you guys know how I make out. |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Yup there out there, just need to findthem. When we were @ the ramp there were about 10 filleted fluke that were monsters!
Did he say how deep they were fishing? |
Re: 06/16 trip - not exactly as planned
Sean,
He said they were fishing between 30/40 feet of water. He also said they were using squid with spearing on double set-up rigs with teasers. He had one in the boat that had to be at least a 12 pounder and what a monster. So at least we know they are out there and now all we have to do is go gettem! :o |
