NEW to V20's
2 Attachment(s)
I just recently bought a 1973 V20 with a 1989 Evinrude 120 VRO, and a '85 EZ Loader double axle trailer. Hopefully it will turn out to be a wise investment, the motor is partially disassembled, why I don't know, neither does the current owner, he acquired it as payoff to a debt and know's nothing about boats.

Welcome aboard...Nice looking V. A little cleaning and some TLC and you might just be up and running in no time. You definitely found the right place for answers to any questions you may have.
|
Thanks Cam, I hope so. I am going to pick her up today
|
Good luck with it....you wont be dissapointed.

Hi. Welcome to the site. Most, if not all, your Wellcraft questions will be answered here..... (maybe not correctly, but answered)....:head:
Seriously though, there are some pretty smart people here with tons of experience with these boats. Anything from a 140 - 200 hp is a good sized engine for these boats, so you should be be fine with the engine you have, as long as it's ok. Cheers... |
Looks like a great start! I see VA registration #s.......

PO was in VA / I am in NC

Just got her home, now the fun begins. I am looking forward to this. Guess I should tell my wife about her before she gets home. I am sitting here going through the paperwork that I received with her, It is nice that everything is documented, So I know what has been done,
Major work done: Carbs rebuilt and major tune up in 2009 ( so why is the engine torn apart??? ) Transom replaced in 2003 |

Took the cowling off tonight and tried to figure out exactly what's missing from under there. I have been looking through posts of rebuilds and have come to the conclusion that the starter and fuel pump are missing, who knows what else. I am no marine mechanic but I am going to try to get her back operational myself. I know the power packs are unbolted and the heads are loosened, I will tighten them up and check compression and go from there.

where are you located in NC
|
Archer Lodge, just a few minutes from Clayton. Let me know sometime when you are heading 70 to the coast, I'd love to meet ya and chat a bit.

hum do you have the lower unit? first thing take the heads off take a pic of the cylinders lets see what those walls look like.
|
Skool, yes I do have the lower unit. Like I said It is completely torn apart right now, why I am not sure. It looks like someone just started taking things apart and didn't know when to stop. it will be Sunday before I can get additional photos.

While you got the lower unit off, go ahead and replace all water pump components..ALL of 'em...and make sure that new rubber impeller gets twisted in right... |
Reel, I wasn't even going to try and torque them back down. I don;t even own a torque wrench. And I am pretty sure the should be "head gaskets" there that also seem to be missing. I am going to meet Skool next weekend and entrust his judgement to whether it is salvagable

Clarification to earlier post.
Skool, yes I do have the lower unit, intact but it is detached, why I don't know. Maybe to replace impeller, may just because there were visible bolts??? I really think they just started removing any bolt they could access. As I ppointed out in the picture both head gaskets are unbolted, gaskets missing, as well as the the square cover with a spring unit inside at the top of the head gaskets, and the sensors on them are loosened as well. |

Here are pictures of the cylinder walls... I don't see any scoring of them, they all feel smooth to me. |
