Hi, Im new and looking for help in VA
Hi everyone. My name is Andy. Ive been boating all my life have always admired wellcraft v20/21s. Im interested in a boat thats on the eastern shore of Virginia, the problem is that its a 10hr drive for meto go look at it. What i would like to do is pay someone, who is knowledgable about boats and somewhat local, to go take pictures and check out this boat for me. This may be one of my most hair brained schemes ever or it could work out well. What do you guys think and is anyone interested in taking me up on this offer. Thanks

J/K...J/K...there oughtta be someone around that area who can swing by and take some pics and check it out for you...are you sure the owner isn't a V-20.com member...if so, we may already know the boat... |
drive 10 hours to look at a boat you may or may not buy
makes perfect sense to us i'm sure somebody can help. welcome |
thanks for the replies guys. the boat is named bay dancer. its a cuddy with a 175 yamaha on it. owners name is matthew. real nice guy, talked with him yesterday. im not sure of the exact location of the boat, craigslist ad wasnt specific. somewhere on the eastern shore of maryland along rt13. i liked what i heard from him yesterday, stringer and transom done, good compression, etc. my concerns are interior layout and condition, is it to big for a single axle trailer, and his asking price of $5500 seems a bit high
|
Hi Andy,
Welcome to the site. You mention the price seems high and it is only a single axle trailer...and its 10 hours away.... We do see V20's up for sale locally from time to time... rkc |
Wish it was closer to me, Eastern shore of Md is at least 4 hours from me. If its in shape like he says, asking price seems very fair in my market.
I have a single axle trailer that tows excellent! |

thanks for the welcomes guys. its listed in the hampton roads virginia craigslist. not sure where that is. now that you mention it i have seen more than a few on single axle trailers. |
Looks like it has a neon green prop?

Just a thought,
Asking price on mine was less than that 8 years ago when the market was good, it had a larger engine, a newer engine at the time, and a nicer tandem axle trailer. Plus mine was only about an hour away. |
Wonder if he put an updated cowl on that motor? The cowl is more like a 2002 - 2006. Definitely not a 1992......

Derail,

Exactly! I'll be glad to help out who and whenever I can! Side note- I bought my last Mako in Fla, sight unseen except for pics....14 hour drive down. Every stop I made down for gas I bought a boat trader. Told my buddy riding with me who knows we might be boat shopping the whole way back home if Mako is a no-go!! |
if i didnt have something to do on saturday i would make the run down and look at the eastern shore one as well as another with an evinrude looper thats in jersey. maybe next weekend. thanks everyone for all the help so far. btw id say thats most definetly not the original cowl

V-20 For sale
Ok guy's I just read this post and guess what? That boat is less than 3 minutes from me! I know Matt & his family very well....I did see a Wellcraft out by rt 13 for sale but didn't connect the dots until now...I just got off the phone with Matt so Fishnfetch if you want to pursue this one let me know....but I'm not taking any money.....................Ha! You guys forgot about me living here on the Shore...I thought at least ole Reel would tune in...must be oldtimers settin in!! Ha!
Reel was highly instrumental in me purchasing my pristine 21 down there in Spartenburg so now I get to return the favor to another member here....aint that what this site is all about?? Matt's Dad owned this boat before passing it along to his son..he picked up a 1993 V21 just a little while before Reel found mine...Mark found the V20 on the western shore of Va, had a local fiberglass guy take care of the transom area & they found a low hour 92 Yamaha in Chesapeake Va. to mount on the stern......Blue runner, the reason the cowl looks newer is because Matt spruced it up and applied new decals.....I don't have a lot of in depth knowledge about the boat/motor but I can tell you Matt is a standup guy and would not misrepresent anything! Better yet, load em up this summer and head on over across the pond into Nassawadox Creek! |
Damn! Why is it when I'm here nobody else is??!
|
Thanks Dave. I spoke with Matt yesterday and he seemed like a real stand up guy. The boat sounds structurally solid and the trailer seemed adequate as well. the only concern was the interior condition since he had no pictures of it and of course the brite green prop. lol. is there any way you could swing by and grab a pic or two of the cockpit area and give the boat a lookin over?
|
Sure, I'll grab the camera tomorrow and snap a few.........

Ha! Yeah buddy.......I don't get on here as much as I would like but something was telling me to log on last night and then I read the post.......I knew I had to know who owned that boat.....D
|
DMOORE YOU ROCK!
Very cool....that explains the cowling. Didn't know if maybe the year model on the motor was a typo or somehting so this explains it. Chalk up another win for the V20(1) brotherhood! Here here... |
1979 v20
Ok Andy here are your pics...........This V is solid throughout but will need some TLC to shine.....I removed the engine cowl so you could get a better idea of the motor condition...since outward appearance doesn't always tell the whole story rule number one when buying a used outboard motor would be to ask for a compression check...I don't know if this has been done but I believe Matt stated in the Craigslist ad that the compression was in fact good. There is some cracking of the gelcoat at the bow flare areas of which I documented, also a small area on the port aft gunnel where the gelcoat has worn thru, not a deal breaker by no means....like I said some TLC is needed like any fiberglass boat that is upwards of 32 years old....
Trailer is sized correctly for an outboard powered boat of this size & weight and has one year old axle installed..trailer tires look very road worthy with no apparent blemishes. All the glass & windshield look to be in very good shape...I did not unfold the bimini top but what I did see appeared to be in good condition. If I missed any areas that are of concern let me know and I will get those posted up. You would be amazed at what a lil TLC can do! Ok,........... maybe a lot Ha!

Good goin', Dave!!...great write-up and pics...and you're right...some serious TLC and that baby will shine again!!...
|
Dang Dave thats one sharp lookin V you got there! Whatcha got under tha hood? I see that Alpha hanging out back. V6?
|

Yeah...what else ya holdin' back?...pretty nice stable-mate for the 21 ya got there...is that about a '74? |
Wow Dave, that's a real beauty. I especially like the stainless steel support brackets on the windshield. Nice touch.
|
Good job on being able to help a future cult member!!
now about that top, i'm sure the boys at the factory never had that in mind when they designed the V, so how bout i come up and take it off your hands for you, i'm sure your ride and mpg will improve. jk, sweet set up, but i will come get it if your tired of people bugging you about it... |
Wow! You guys have some bad memories! This is the V I sold about 4 years ago! Its still in the V20 Gallery............and I thought you guise was sharp! HA! But I always welcome positive comments! I do miss her, especially those swivel seats....the 21 don't do that :(...she went to a diver in Virginia Beach....haven't seen it since......I had a lot of time and $ in her.....feel free to ask questions...I may have the answer! D
