New guy, 3 feet short of a V20

Hey guys, I know its not a V20 but I can't find any info directly related to it. 1974 Wellcraft 17' Center Console. Lumberslinger178 is my old man, so I found my way here. Anyway on to the pictures...

Glad to have you as a member Kenny. Nice looking boat.
BTW knowing your dad do you think he'll give you h&ll for the trailer light wires hanging like that. :haha:

kennykenny 03-13-2011 08:13 PM

Haha, those were just temporary for the ride home.

phatdaddy 03-13-2011 08:55 PM

looks like a great project. when i saw the lights, i thought, finally, somebody has figured out a way to get lights to last more than one season.

Welcome aboard Splinter.

I think Stinky has a 16' center console?????

reelapeelin 03-14-2011 09:14 AM

Welcome to the fray!!...hope you like it here and we look forward to seeing the progress on your 17...there are several of those here, so you'll be right at home...

The good news is you got a great starter boat..appears somebody took good care of it all these years...you'll enjoy using it once you splash it!!

The bad news is your old man set the bar right HIGH for you...his DC and that sweet Etec are a tuff-to-beat combo...we just wish he'd clean the damn thing up every now and then...criminal how he neglects it that way...:you:

Keep us posted on what you do and if you need any opinions just holler...there are plenty of those around here...:fight:

Sweet old school CC. Welcome to the site!

Started eliminating some of the wiring that has built up in it over the last 37 years and after trying to locate where things came from and where they were going I just decided to gut it and re-wire it myself. It will give me some piece of mind, I also removed and tossed all the fuel hoses, I might as well go the extra mile now.

Hey guys progress has been slow but I'm getting closer to seeing if this thing actually floats, shooting for a memorial day shakedown. I'll post pics of the progress soon. I've searched and found myself lost in the math equations trying to figure out what size bilge pump would be sufficient for my application. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

aussie 04-28-2011 05:17 PM

nice boat for a first one mine was a glass 14ft clinker with a seahorse 40hp it had electric gears no tilt and electric start
took it out after giving it a paint job had it going flat out then i hears a drowning noise the engine come off lol lucky for the old steering cables kept it from sinking. good news got it home got all the water out and it only broke a key way on the flywheel so i made one and had it out on the water the same day

think i was doing a bit of this:beer:when i put the engine back on
and about the 3 ft short my wife always tells me im a few inches short lol

I used a triplex round wire at 16 gauge for a 500 gph pump(Auto pumps need 3 wires). Honestly you can get away with running 18 gauge for everything on the boat. I gutted about 85% of the wiring on mine and replaced it with the 18 guage for most of the runs in the console. Then to power my fuse block I used a 6 gauge feeder from the battery.

Got a lot done in the past few days, only got pictures of bottom paint so far though, more to come. Ran new throttle and shift cables, and fuel lines. Reinstalled gas tank and plumbed everything. Rewired lights, radio, 12v accessory, and a few other things with help from a few friends. Filled it up with gas and was relieved to hear it fire up on the first turn.

Almost! I have some cosmetic stuff to take care of before it goes in. I was originally shooting for memorial day weekend, but I'm way ahead of that now, hopefully next weekend. I figure if I get what I want done before it goes in, the only reason it'll have to come out until fall is if it's broken.

Thank God its out of my driveway:fight::fight::fight:

Destroyer 05-08-2011 11:36 AM

Kenny, did you talk to your dad about the horrible condition of his boat like we asked you to? I mean... really,.... it's getting embarassing.:hide:

willy 05-08-2011 11:56 AM

Yea its been sitting covered up and sterilized all winter. Now he is going to have to put messy oil and gas in her, maybe some fish blood and scales.
It may be a traumatic time of year for Ken.

Yeah, but he's too thick headed, I even tried to get him to break his habits on my boat...no dice.

Gas and oil maybe, but as far as fish goes...he'd actually have to catch one!

I got a 75 V-17 that is stripped out and ready for new stringers and deck. I went to West Marine yesterday and bought 2 gallons of 105 resin and 206 hardener, pumps, ss screws and all the tools I need to finish off the boat, good luck on yours and welcome..............

kennykenny 05-11-2011 09:01 PM

Got the sprayer out and painted the seat and console.
