Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

I left the house 5 am headed for the ramp, on the way there, there was a boat a car ahead of me and he lost a fish tote and almost hit the car in front of me, I pulled over and got it, I figured if I see him I give it to him and if not I keep it, no sense wasting a good tote!

About a mile up the road he was on the side of the road looking to see what he lost?? I pulled over and said I have your tote in the back of the truck, he took it thanked me and I was off!

Meet friend Kenny there at the ramp launched the boat.

On the way out the wind was 10 to 15 NW right in are face with the tide right in are face!! Made form a real wet ride out even in a cuddy!! Seas 1 to 2 feet.

OK headed out of Falmouth Harborer at 6am, headed right for Quicks Hole as there was some reports of big Fluke around??

Got there and fished 45 min and manged to just get 3 Select size and nothing else.

Moved to the Hooter as this is were a friend said he got 110# the day before.

Got there and the same friend was there and was getting anything! So we decided to head over to Lucas Shoals.

Got to Lucas and the tide was wrong, kept picking one here and one there but nothing to get excited about.

Well it was now like 11:30 and the bite always seems to die off at Noon so I said we will stay till noon and we out of here!!
Kenny said yea I guess its a no sale day. said yep.

Then the tide changed, and the bite was on!! We had 3 rods out and were getting triples!! Non stop action went on for more then a hour!
I said Kenny he said what, I said it looks like a sell day!! He goes yep sure does!!

OK now its time to go home, and the wind is now 20+ from the SW (at are back) and a in going tide we are all set!! Well we had 3 to 5 foot seas now and plowing right threw and dry as a bone all the way!

In the end we had 31 pounds Selects, and 72 pounds market Fluke for a total of 103 pounds!

And here are the pic's to prove it today!! ;) *For all you doubters!! *;)

Nice job MJ.....are you using all those squid you caught earlier or something else? I need to find a spot like that!

chumbucket 06-22-2007 01:58 AM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

We usually start off the day with squid strips or sand eels. fresh Fluke belly strips work best for me though and I think MJ will agree. First Fluke gets a belly fillet cut into 3/4" X 6" strips. Use the fresh on bucktails, flukeballs, squid jigs, wide gap hooks with a couple of Colorado spinner blades, etc. Tie onto an 18"-36" flurocarbon leader, a 3-way swivel with a lead weight heavy enough to hold bottom on your drift (usually between 4-8oz but sometimes heavier in deeper water). I like S-Glass rods for a bit of tip sensitivity but still have the backbone to lift the fish against the current. Up here Vineyard Sound has a pretty strong current. MJ used to (and still does I'm sure) like using a narrow frame Penn Squidder like the 146 or 145. Very tough reel that will last. He had been thinking of trying something a bit smaller though and possibly with a levelwind because of his hands with the Diabetes. I gave him a Penn Mag10 to try and he called me this afternoon raving about the reel. Sounds like he's found a new favorite Fluking reel. 8) ;D

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

can you elaborate a little more on the belly strips. i have heard of that before. so, you're sayn to use the "white" belly side of the flounder and cut it into strips or the actual stomach?

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

after i posted i re-read your post and i think i answered my question with your previously posted answer to my previously posted question. lol

chumbucket 06-22-2007 02:55 AM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

::) ;D ;D ;DYeah. Not the actual stomach but the actual meat. The skin is like suede and will hold on the hook for a long time.

macojoe 06-22-2007 08:22 AM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Just as CB said, I use a fish finder on the running line and a swivel to a 30" floro leader, 30# test, to a 3/0 SS wide gap hook.

Now I start with squid then over to Fluke Belly, but both sides of the fluke will work!! Some times a squid skirt tiped with squid or fluke belly.

I don't like or use spinners, but some do. Weights here are from 4 to 10 oz, yesterday we ade most of the day with 6 oz, but in the end it was running so hard a 12oz would not hold and thwen thats when we called it quits.

No rocket science here!! Just have to be were the fish are, they are hungry!!

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Yep, I'm jealous ;) I've been busy lately, but have still made my fishing trips. Haven't posted a report due to lack of pics. ::)

Lets just say that as of yesterday, the triggers, spadefish, flounder, seabass, bluefish, and stargazers are all ready and willing to play and darn close to home too ;D

Nice catch MJ! Kenny got any good stories?

macojoe 06-22-2007 11:47 AM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Thanks all!!

And the rod I use is a ST.Croix, saltwater # F70M-BK 3/4 to 3 oz Line wt 10 to 20 and 7' long

thats the blank, I built the rod myself.

The reel as always been a Narrow Penn 146, very beefy reel to take a beating all year commercial and never fail me! I have 4 such reels.

But as CB said he was able to find a few reels for a deal, and we got to talking and he let me have the Penn Mag 10 Level wind, as soon as you hold this reel you know it means business!!

I have always hated Levels, why?? I am not sure, but after I got past the not having to thumb the line, I am hooked on this reel!
NO BIRD NESTS!! The magnets in this reel stop it as soon as it hits bottom!
The 146's stop also buy you have to adjust things first.

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Question MJ - does a guest (Kenny in this case) have to have a commercial license in order to fish with you when you are fishing your commercial size and creel limits?

macojoe 06-22-2007 07:08 PM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Mac there is nothing special about it, but I will get you some pic's, All I did was to get to adjustable poles and mount to were they lined up on the dash.
Right now I have the top mounted backwards *:-/ so it folds back and not front. So I have to take it all apart and fix it.
Trying to get it done this week end since I no fish weekends, But I have stuff to do? *I just go go go *>:(

--------------------------------------------------------------------

BR
When you buy a boat Lic no! *You can take anyone with you but have to follow all the rules.
One lic per boat!

Use to be that you could buy individual lic and everyone needed one, then you had option to get boat lic were the lic covered all on the boat, But this year is new now, if you buy the individual lic you can only fish from shore, and need a boat lic for anything caught on a boat.

Lic for 1, *

$35 then $30 for each endorsement, Striper, Fluke, Sea Bass, Scup, ect ect.. the more you buy the more you pay! *Covers fish from shore only!!

Boat Lic

$130, Then $30 for each endorsement, same as above. *Covers fish from shore or boat.
But only the name on lic is covered on shore, and all on the boat.

You can no longer get a Fluke Lic in Ma. Been that way now for 6 or 7 years now. *So even if your not fishing this year you better get it, cause once you lose it your not getting it back!!

So I can take anyone that shows up at the ramp!! I go Tue, Wed, Thur ;)

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

THAT'S THE WAY IT IS HERE IN MS. IF YOUR GOING TO FISH COMMERCIALLY YA HAVE TO HAVE A COMMERCIAL LICENSE FOR THE BOAT AND ONE FOR EVERY INDIVIDUAL ON THE BOAT. WELL, NOW YA KNOW!

macojoe 06-23-2007 01:23 AM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

I don't need a lic for everyone just the boat and everyone is covered.

When you say 3# is that 3 pounds? If not what does 3# and 5 mean in size?

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

MJ - Where's the ICE? Those fish should be chill'n down . . . I always did well in the afternoon . . . actually 5pm until 7pm is almost as good as early morning. Most folks are outta there by 3-4pm.

I regret letting my blue card/fluke permit go . . . I had it for 12 years (since I was 19).

What MJ didn't mention is that this is a BAD day of flukin . . . He usually had that many fish before 10am.

bigshrimpin 06-26-2007 09:01 PM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

MJ - How's the price this year? Is it back up to $2.50 yet . . . like it was in 1995.

macojoe 06-27-2007 10:17 PM

Re: Fluke 6/21/07 W/Pic's!!

Some Ice was under, and Ice was therown on right after the pic.

Jumbo $3.10 Selects $2.75 Market $2.25

Got blown out this week, but looks good for next week!! Of coarse I might only get one day cause of the holiday :'(
