Is this boat overpriced?

http://www.jaxyachtsales.com/pre_own...R0&veh=1718367

I'm in Northeast Florida. This boat is very well kept, but has no trailer. The broker has a suitable trailer (used aluminum) available for $1,300. What is a fair offer? It doesn't look much better than Willy's for $4500 or the '87 for $4,700. But it's 1 mile away, not in Jersey. Any help from the experts?

bradford 08-04-2010 07:44 PM

Make him a reasonable cash offer and tell him to throw the trailer in on the deal.

awthacker 08-04-2010 08:05 PM

Actually, my offer today of $5000 was sourly rejected by the seller, who I have not met (consignment). There is no trailer, as it has been in dry storage. I'm not really prepared to go over $6500 for the boat and trailer. The broker and I agree that the seller is being unreasonable and could've at least counter-offered.

The more time I spend on this forum, the more I like the v20. I plan on primarily diving, but also fishing and entertaining the family. I haven't seen a more roomy boat.

cape cod v20 08-04-2010 08:07 PM

I just picked up my v20 2 months ago which is also an 88, but mine has an 05 motor with less than 200 hours , and included a trailer for less than what he is asking for that.

phester 08-04-2010 08:35 PM

the boat looks nice but at 6200.00 and no trailer he'll be sittin on that for a while

RWilson2526 08-04-2010 08:46 PM

That boat does look pretty clean though.....I think thats the original back to back lounge seat which looks pristine which means the rest probably is too.

It really amazes me how cheap used boats sell for. I mean if you didnt know there were boats on every corner selling for 3-4k you'd look at a nice 20' boat with big old motor on the back and think it looks like 6k worth of material...when I tell people that have no exposure to boats or used boat market that my boat only cost 4K they are amazed you can get something so big for so little.

randlemanboater 08-04-2010 09:03 PM

I'd say it is a bit high.

Give him til December to stew and then offer him $4K.

charlie_the_tuna 08-04-2010 09:31 PM

overpriced as hell. walk away.

awthacker 08-05-2010 08:52 PM

How about this one?

This gentleman is asking $4400. 1984 w/ 1984 Johnson 150. It comes with the trailer. It needs new wiring IMO & has no electronics. The engine was rebuilt about 1 yr ago. Kind of a blank slate. My wife doesn't think it looks too hot. Trying to tell her to be patient. The floors and transom are sturdy. There are some small stress cracks at the corners of the hatches in the floor -- is this a problem? Plan on mostly diving, so I'm not concerned about the lack of rod holders. The windshields a little loose on the passenger side - I guess just put bigger screws in? There is no door to the cabin - is it missing or was there never one on this model?

awthacker 08-05-2010 08:54 PM

Also, is this where the battery normally sits? Does it just push back under the transom? Should I run two batteries if I were to rewire it?

THEFERMANATOR 08-05-2010 08:58 PM

That boat is MUCH older than 84, that is a 77 or older hull.

awthacker 08-05-2010 09:13 PM

You're probably right... sorry. I've looked at a few now and guess I got confused. The craigslist listing doesn't indicate a year. Guess I assumed it was 1984. I even went and looked and took pictures. The engine doesn't look 77ish, does it? Any idea on what a fair offer is?

charlie_the_tuna 08-05-2010 09:38 PM

i was just gonna say that, ferm..... that aint no '84. lotsa bucks for a 70's boat. patience my friend. these boats are a dime a dozen. it'll happen. you'll know when its right. take your time.

Destroyer 08-05-2010 11:12 PM

I don't like it... but then, that's me. Seats are shot, back to back is missing and the deck is stained where it was. That's ok if you don't mind it I guess... Doesn't look like an 84 either.. I'm thinking mid 70's...Gas lines look wierd.. Maybe it's the angle but I didn't see a winch on the trailer... not familiar with float-ons, so maybe that's ok.. but I don't like it. If it were me I'd keep looking or get a better price. It's the height of the boating season and prices are at their premium.. If you can I'd wait till the end of the season... you'll find many many more boats at a lower price. Just my two cents.:head:

Okay, it's a '74 with an '85 engine (rebuilt in '08). Not sure where I got '84 from. I notice it doesn't have the self bailing transom like the newer ones do. What's the value on an older model like this?

Brought an '82 V20 home today. It has a 185HP Evinrude V6. It needs some TLC, but I thought I couldn't go wrong for $1700. I'll get some better pics up by the weekend. Lot's of work to do and I'm gonna need you guys' help.

RWilson2526 10-07-2010 07:29 AM

Awesome...congratulations.... I think you're right for $1700 how can you go wrong...I mean you cant hardly buy a refrigerator these days for that much money and you have a boat that you can get tons of enjoyment out of.

Are those round hatches on the cuddy deck?

Blue_Runner 10-07-2010 08:00 AM

Attaboy!!! Good job. Go back to that other guy you offered 5k and offer $1500 just for spite. LOL Good luck with your new boat.

Yeah. They look pretty new. It also has a brand new bimini - for a Monterrey, but it fits nicely. And there is a Garmin fishfinder new in the box, but I'll probably replace it before this thing ever gets wet. Other than those items... it needs a complete overhaul. I think I should probably also take the engine in for an inspection & probable rebuild... or does anyone recommend doing this myself? I did check compression and the cylinders were consistent at 75 lbs, but I haven't researched the OEM specs for it yet.

I won't bother, but it is still sitting there.

randlemanboater 10-07-2010 08:48 PM

Congrats!

Skools Out 10-11-2010 08:14 AM

um one thing the motor is missing the tilt trim section.

awthacker 10-12-2010 02:13 PM

trim/tilt

Yeah... I noticed that at the time of purchase and negotiated down $300 for it. What I didn't know was that I can buy the part for $1,049.00!!! Haven't decided what to do about the engine yet. I'll get a mechanics opinion.

I don't know if it will work, but this fella lives up the road from me.

That might be a good opportunity to get a used one, but I'm not sure what I'll do yet. I need a professional opinion on whether my motor is reliable, or if I should just re-power.

If you are at all thinking about doing it yourself, I would recommend jumping right in. You said in a later post you were considering of repowering as an option. If that's true, you don't have much to lose other than some time and the cost of a manual. Forget the Clymer or Seloc, get a real one. I found a factory manual for mine, cost $75.

Its really not that hard a skill to learn, although there are those that just do not seem to have any aptitude for mechanical work.

As for compression, 75psi seems a little low, but it still might be enough to fire. Having the same psi reading on each cylinder is more important than an absolute number. But if the compression is too low, the gas/air mix won't ignite. search for the thread "awakening a sleeping outboard" over at iboats.com,

Very true..but also keep in mind that this engine has been sitting for a while... It's likely that the rings are stuck in place from sitting.. To do a proper compression test start the engine and let it run for a while..
Let it come up to operating temp.. Then pull the compression test. It will give you a more accurate reading.

Additionally, If it were me I'd get a portable tank, fill it with fresh gas and oil and a double shot of Seafoam and run the engine with that gas for a while (15 mins or so) In a lot of cases the Seafoam will cut through the gunk and free up the rings.

DO NOT REV THE ENGINE while on earmuffs.. Idle speed only please..
