Floors too high in those 88's.

It is a nice looking V, just a long way from me.

Re: Cheap V-20 project

after the 70's the floors all high!
My boat (75) has no flotation, and if was to go down it would not stop till it got to the bottom!

They raised the deck, later to make room for the flotation.

randlemanboater 02-01-2007 01:00 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Floatation good, sinking bad.

What year did they start with the foam?

macojoe 02-01-2007 01:09 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Not sure?? I want to say 77 or 78 But defiantly anything 80 and up has it!

Mulv80 02-01-2007 01:09 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

My 79 doesnt have any foam. It makes for a loud ride in chop but I also attribute my solid floor and stringers in a 27 year old boat to the lack of foam.

randlemanboater 02-01-2007 01:18 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

If people would keep the front of their boats jacked up, that wouldn't be as big an issue.

It kills me to see a boat sitting in a yard uncovered with the bow on the ground. I want to stop and prop em up.

Re: Cheap V-20 project

My 78 has foam under the floor.

macojoe 02-01-2007 01:56 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

79 don't, 78 does ?? Maybe they were undecided??

I thought they said it was 78 they started?? But I can say for sure 75 does not and all 80 + does

randlemanboater 02-01-2007 03:23 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Could be it was offered as an option?

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Dam, I was hoping my 78 didn't have foam,
I have to pull the tank this year and clean it really good. >:(

Skools Out 02-01-2007 03:57 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

that 79 should have it unless someone has taken the floor out at some point and removed the foam and never replaced ???

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Ok... I've been lurking for a quite a while but it's time to jump in. Don't own a V-20 but I have seen a few up close. (They are few and far between here in Northen California.) Thanks to you guys and this section of the forum "V-20" and "Wellcraft" have become nearly forbidden words at my house... for now. This year we get a new car for the lady. Next year you guys are going to help me track down the V-20 of my dreams. (I figure you owe me this cuz my addiction is mostly your fault.) I am still salivating over "Old School". Would have snapped that up from Willy if the timing was better.

Now to my question: Did the addition of flotation and the change in deck height coincide with the self bailing feature?

Re: Cheap V-20 project

CORRECTION: My 79 has foam around the gas tank, however this is the only location where there is foam and I would find it hard to believe that this little bit of foam would provide any substantial bouyancy if needed.

Yep...good observation...deck has to be above water-line in order to "self-bail" w/ out pumps, etc...

Good luck in your search for V-20 when you're ready...you're doin' the right thing by keepin' an eye here...some very nice "Vs" for sale go thru here...I'd have a yard full of 'em if I could
;) ...

MULV:

OUR'S DONT HAVE FOAM, HOWEVER THE BUNK BEDS ARE HOLOW PLUS THE ANCHOR HOLDING SPACE ((IF YOU HAVE AN O RING HATCH) WOULD MAKE ANOTHER FLOTATION AREA.

This one seems to be staying pretty cheep, but who knows with these things.

Its 750 miles away from me!!!!!

THEFERMANATOR 02-04-2007 06:43 PM

Re: Cheap V-20 project

It's only about 250 miles from me, and yes I'm watching it closely. Mine has turned into a MUCH bigger project than I anticapated so I'd rather get one needing less work. But there is some things about it that concern me.

1. The transom looks wet around the port lower engine mounting hole. Could be a sign of the transom having some saturation.

2. I sent the guy some questions on FRIDAY and he has yet to respond to the ones where I asked about the transom and floor having any soft spots, delamination, saturation or cracking. This gives me a bad feeling about this seller. He responded to my other questions, but not this one. And he has posted the answers to many other questions since then.

I've only sent him 2 different messages through E-bay, the first one was what type of controls and the second was about the transom and floor. I just sent him one to see if he'll let me come take a look at it. It aint that far of a drive for me really, and mine needs alot of work. I'd like to get in some winter grouper fishing this year, but all of my boats that can go offshore are project boats >:(.

I just emailed teh guy the same questions about the transom and floor. Lets see if he responds. ;D

He's answering the simple questions, but hasn't seemed to have responded to the biggies. Maybe his feedback is appropriate? I hope not, I want to get some fishing in this winter still. I've got a line on a NICE 90 200HP EVINRUDE for $2500(can probably get him for less).

It was a mostly freshwater motor. Very clean no corrosion. And comes with a 30 day warranty. And I don't know about your area, but here in FL these V-6 JOHNNY-RUDES are still fetching a pretty penny. And NADA put it around $2800 I believe when I run it.

He replied back to me with one sentence :

Re: Cheap V-20 project

He replied back to me as well saying transom is solid and ready to fish. ;D

NOPE!!!
I went and looked at it today(286 miles one way) and boy was I disapointed. It isn't in horrible condition, but nothing like what the pictures show. Somebody went and painted it with a roller(you can see the roller lines when you get close), and there are numerous spots on the bottom where it has been hit and repaired(and some still needing repair). There not major, but should be attended to. There is also about a 1/4" hole anout 1 1/2" deep in the transom(where somebody had something mouted at one tim but isn't there anymore), that is on the port side next to the engine below the waterline(and yes it was wet inside of it). There are numerous spider and thin hairline cracks inside on the transom and the stringer atatchment area. And I realize I'm a big guy(about 260), but I barely put a 100 lbs of pressure on the foot of the outboard and it moved almost an inch. Also the bottom of the clamp brackets sunk into the transom about an 1/8" by me just pushing inward on the engine by hand. The deck in it is solid(about the only thing that was really nice about it), but the port side seeat is pretty well rotted out. There was also water standing in the cabin floor, and you could see quite a bit of water standing in the bottom of the hull below the cabin drain. The trailer has new tires and wheels on it, but that is about it. The hubs looked untouched, and the bunk mounting brackets were heavily rusted. And the trailer fits the boat poorly as well. I know I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but this thing is gonna need a transom in probably a 1 or 2. And the trailer should have new bunk brackets installed and bunk carpeting before a long trip. And the boat really didn't look that nice once you got up close to it because of all of the roller lines down the sides. Maybe I'm being to critical of it, but you won't see me bidding on it. My current V is in almost as good a condition, and looks a whole lot better with original gel-coat on the sides.

I cant believe this boat with no power is over $2000

Re: Cheap V-20 project

Well it looks good in the pics, and the guys is saying it is solid.

That's why I don't care for online auctions. I know some people get some great deals but I either loose out at the last minute or win the auction and get shafted with a piece of junk that looked good in the picture.
