Transom cap
I just finished my transom job. MY question is do I have to put a cap on it and if so what do I use? The transom isa 2-1/4" thick.
|
yes cap and seal it good
|
Isn't it possible to just fiberglass over and leave the cap off? It seems to look a lot cleaner when done this way.
|
The cap is a protector. If the transom glass should develop a crack from the bouncing and flexing it gets the cap still keeps the water out, and it serves as a protector to a limited degree for things being dropped on the top of the transom.. Plus a clean topcap looks nice also... Since things cost money, and lots of things cost lots of money, I've found that if a manufacturer spends money to install something there's usually a reason for it.

Yeah Curapa I put three layers of glass and plenty of resin on the top of transom already, I was thinking the same as you but it does make sense what destroyer is saying. I just don't know where to get it made so it will fit my thickness?

Look around online or in your phone book for a local sheetmetal shop. Pay them a visit in person late in the day when everyone is in a good mood with your dimensions...they'll probably bend you one up while you wait and charge you maybe $20 bucks...Not sure where you are located but if you are in NJ send me a pm and I can get you something.

You can also use vinyl siding corner piece. When i did mine, i wrapped it with glass and paint it different color so looks like a cap but fully waterproof.

Yeah when i said needs cap that means you need something on top to seal it up. i usually use 4 layers of glass over all mine.

I glassed mine when I re-did the transom and brought it up to a 25, It was my first glassing job. It wasn't perfect but heck you gotta start somewhere and it is not so bad and the fish don't mind.

Did you use a composite core for the re-do ? If you did heck don't cap it, per Skool and the Guy's here I did not cap mine looks great to this day..
Only problem is my neighbour cat crawls in to sleep during the night when it rains and could see a few claw marks on it .. I love cats so she is excused ... |
No I used layers of marine ply and West resin with 17 oz. bidirectional cloth backed with 3/4 oz glass mat
|
I'll post pics soon

I used plywood and west in my transom. I glassed my cap and it turned out pretty good.
