NJ Get together 7-17

Hey MJ or Valiant, can we maybe get this as a sticky for a while?

As the original thread got a little muddled with Ferm's trip up to the great white north...I thought I would see if I could get a thread up at the top for this years NJ get together as originally suggested by Captain Pete....We are planning on meeting at Tice's Shoal in Barnegat Bay on July 17. As the place can get pretty crowded I guess we will do the same as last year and have the agreed upon rendezvous at the north end of the pack. Of course as time comes closer we can make some other arrangements should we get some interest.

If the plan holds up I'll be caravaning down with Destroyer (Paul) and I with my family at least will be camping at Cedar Creek campground on Saturday night....We stayed there last year and it was a real nice campground

UGH!!! Engine trouble (overheating on right bank) may keep me out.. working on it..(I think it's a stuck t-stat). :head: ...trying my best. I'll keep you updated. But for right now I'm still in.

captpete13 06-14-2010 11:52 AM

Good idea on the sticky thread Rob. You know I'm in. I'm going to get one of those portable grills that fit in your rod holder just for this occasion. So we can have some real food with all my Rolling Rocks:beer:

willy 06-14-2010 08:54 PM

I may have some transition stuff going on boat wise but intend one way or another to get there.
And Pete got your messages, will let you know, thanks

lumberslinger178 07-05-2010 09:17 PM

its getting close lets get a head count.......

1.lumber and family.

RWilson2526 07-06-2010 10:03 AM

I'm in...wife and 2 kids.

nipper 07-06-2010 10:36 AM

Just may be pulling my V up to Scituate Massachusetts in that time frame. Going up there to see my Mom and will have up to 3 of the kids with me. Flight prices are not great, so I will probably drive it, and although it would suck up a log of gas, thinking about bringing the V with me. I hate sitting around my Mom's cottage on Scituate harbor looking out at the ocean without a boat to go out on. I could just route my trip through the Garden State and join up with y'all. Long shot at this point, but possible.

If I do pull the V up to Scituate, Mass. but do not make it to the get-together, I would love to meet up with CB, MJ and any of you others up in the Bay State.

lumberslinger178 07-06-2010 05:00 PM

today I decided not to work and took a ride to tices and saw capt pete. good to see ya pete.

Great looking boat CaptPete. I really like the yellow hull.

RWilson2526 07-06-2010 07:55 PM

you guys got some nerve not workin' while the rest of us are....pretty good crowd for a Tuesday. How was the heat ...I was out yesterday and even at good cruising speed it still felt friggin hot out.

And Nipper that would be awesome if you stopped by for some old fashioned NJ hospitality.

captpete13 07-06-2010 08:27 PM

it was good to see you too lumber. We (my wife,my dog,and I) were just leaving after spending some time on the ocean side on the beach. My dog is a real trooper. After being thrashed by waves continued to swim out through the surf to swim with me. Our visit was cut short when my wife was attacted by some greenhead flies. When you saw us we were heading to a sandbar by the lighthouse. Every single sandbar over there had horseshoe crabs all over them which creeped out my wife. So we decided to just head home. That boat of yours is just as nice in person as it is in all your pics. I'm anxious to see it up close.

Nipper,
thanks. It would really be great if you made it to the get together

Rob,
My wife and I both have the week off. It was damn hot out! But by the lighthouse it was almost 10 degrees cooler. I didn't want to leave. I was suprised to see that many boats there for a tuesday. I took the kids over there on Saturday. There had to have been 500 boats there. But it was a blast.

Less than two weeks to go. Can't wait to raft up and down some cold ones with some other v20'ers

lumberslinger178 07-06-2010 08:31 PM

rob it was 101 and green heads were out for a while, I tried crabbing but couldnt take it, so I went to tices to clock my ride and it took me 25 minutes from tices to my boat slip cruising at 4500 rpms.

i think i just mite make it . going over to mv monday to get title changed over then get trailer in shape . hope to put in water at lacey elks ramp.:head:

willy 07-10-2010 08:40 PM

Whats the closest public ramp to launch from to get over to Tices?

BRIELLY 07-10-2010 09:08 PM

Here's a list of ramps in NJ. http://www.thefishingline.com/njramp.htm Scroll down the page a bit to see the Barneget bay ramps. There are a few within striking distance to Tice's. Supposedly there is a free ramp near the state marina in Forked River but Ive never used it. Hopefully someone else will chime in on that. Any ramp in that area will be a 5-10 minute ride across the bay. I'll see you guys out there.

See the beginning of this thread. It's not a free ramp.. it's a street that has a launch area at the end of it. It's just a side street that ends at the waters edge in a little cove. A long time ago someone dumped some crushed stone in at the end for better traction.. others followed.. after a while there was a launch area. I used to use it in the mid 70's all the time when I lived in Tom's River. I checked on Google Earth a few weeks ago and it's still there, and it's listed on NJ Launch ramps. There are two problems... one is it's a very gentle slope, so you need to get your trailer wet. The other is that it's only a street... when the street fills up with trailers you have no place to park after launching, so you need to get there early (4am ish) if you want to launch there. But it's free, and it's in fresh water (Cedar Creek) so your engine gets a little sweet water internal wash after being in the brine all day. It's a 5-10 minute run down the river past several Marinas to the bay (5 MPH-No Wake Zone) and then a short (10 mins tops) ride straight across the bay to the lighthouse. If anyone wants/needs directions to get there send me a PM and I'll tell them where it is. Really only locals know about it and they keep it's location secret for the most part.:zip:

RWilson2526 07-10-2010 09:59 PM

last year and probably this year again I will use a ramp at Downes Fish Camp....small little place which is in Bayville . $10 to launch pretty quiet. Its the closest one to the campground we are staying at....Will probably use that one again as we are this year going to get down there Friday night so as to get an earlier start on Saturday...

Destroyer, hows your engine running...got that heat issue worked out.?

Look forward to meeting you...hope you make it...!

Destroyer 07-10-2010 10:11 PM

It was the stat.. Removed it and everything was normal in that regard. I have some carb cleaning issues... If they can do it by Friday I think I'm going to take it up to Lake Hopatcong and have it serviced. (Impeller,Plugs,Lower Fluids,Carbs cleaned and syncronized,Powertune Engine,New T'Stats) That's really all she needs to be ready for the weekend. If they can't do it then I'll do the stats, carbs and the gear lube and skip the rest till after the meet. I know the Impeller is ok (changed last year) and she already has new plugs in her, so it's really just the carbs that are giving me problems at this time.. She sat too long in Florida and they need a cleaning now. So the race is on.

Destroyer 07-13-2010 08:40 AM

Sorry RW and everyone else. It's just not going to happen for me this time. Too many things to do, too short a time period to do them in. Carbs need to be pulled, cleaned, remounted and syncro'ed, and a few other minor things should be done also. I was hoping I could take it to a Marina to have it done while I was at work, but they are all backed up. One Marina told me the earliest he could get me in the shop was 2 weeks from now....(and he was one of the fastest)...Ahh well... take pics so I can see what I missed...

willy 07-14-2010 12:33 AM

All right you Snaggers, here is my game plan. I will be towing to Lavalette and putting the boat in Ocean Beach Marina, in a slip there on Saturday morning.
Never made the run and don't know the waters but will be making what I have been told is a 25 minute by boat run to Tices Shoal.
Should be interesting.
What time do all you fellows plan on getting there?
What do I need to bring? Are we rafting up or anchoring up in the vicinity.
Are there going to be any super models in bikinis?
What are we doing, just hanging, fishing, walking the trail to the beach?
Give me the skinny.
Also I will be on channel 68, if you guys down there are using a diffrent channel let me know.

nipper 07-14-2010 07:58 AM

It was a long shot but I really wanted to meet up with you guys. As it turns out, I will be travelling to Scituate, MA the week after.

captpete13 07-14-2010 03:50 PM

Willy,
25 minutes sounds a little short to me. Probably closer to 40. The waters are very simple. Just follow the bouy channel out to the ICW and head south. When you get to ICW 40 you will see all the boats to your southeast just point your boat right at em. My wife has to work till noon on Saturday so we probably won't get there till 1. Bring whatever you want. I have a portable grill for burgers and dogs or whatever. Last year we rafted up together towards the north end of the pack. If you want to we could meet at the rt37 bridge and run down together.

Destroyer,
Thats too bad about your boat. you should bring it down and get towed out there. If there was more time I would say bring it down and I would fix it for ya.

lumberslinger178 07-14-2010 04:49 PM

We will be leaving around 9issh after I wax the boat.....haha j/k... to head up get a spot anchor and wait for everyone...... we mite be bringing our kayak but definity our tubes noodles and rafts.

RWilson2526 07-15-2010 06:24 AM

I should be in around that time too Lumber....I'm up for anything...hanging out, making a little run somewhere, whatever.

Paul sorry you didnt get your boat squared away in time....I think my motor could use a little work itself (idling like crap) but it will have to wait until after this weekend.

Destroyer 07-15-2010 11:24 AM

Thanks for the comiseration guys. I got the trailer squared away, the electronics mounted and working, the wiring done, the bilge pumps rewired, the bow rail installed, the navigation lights done. But the engine is just not cooperating. Still need to rebuild the carbs and clean/wax the boat. There's a very slim chance that I might make it, but it's really doubtful at this time.

A family member is getting married in a week so the clan is gathering. Brothers, sisters and others are flying in from all parts of the globe, so I have airport runs to do to pick them up. (Sister that lives in France is flying in today at 4:30 as an example) It's just eating up any spare time I might have had to work on the engine. <sigh> I was really looking forward to meeting you guys.... I guess it will have to wait for the next meet.:head: Hope everyone has a great time

Thanks for the kind thoughts and the offer for the towing or the fixing Capt. I actually considered using my kicker to get out to the party. At least that's running sweetly (9.9 Honda 4 stroke) but I just can't see that happening. if I can't make it on my main, I shouldn't be going.

willy 07-15-2010 04:44 PM

All right who's in?

What VHF channel you guys going to be on (68?)

Pete sent you a PM, let me know

RWilson2526 07-15-2010 05:26 PM

Well I currently have an *** load of camping gear surrounding my boat at the moment so I guess I'm still in....I just called Buddy who was the guy that was there last year, he's the one with the PRISTINE 84 cuddy. I had his number on my cell phone from hooking up last year so I gave him a ring...sounds like he will be there as well from the sounds of it.

I'll keep my radio on 68 Willy.

willy 07-15-2010 08:25 PM
