gas cap vent
Not a V20 but...........My boat has a perfect vent, but when the tank is full and I have the trailer up a little on the trailer to keep the water draining, the vent gets blocked by gas, The result is leaking gas out the vent.
I have thought about adding a second vent in the front of the tank so the air will vent there when boat is tilted. But that means drilling a vent hole in front of the tank? So i was thinking of a vented gas cap, but all the ones I see still needs the small hose connected, which means still drilling a hole for a vent. I know i can't be the only one with this problem, so what have you guys done?? Thanks |
Normaly the vent port on the tank should be in the front section, if that is the case with yours, all you have to do is relocate the vent fitting more forward. Where is the tank fill fitting?

tank fill front of tank, vent rear of tank, tank is about 6 feet long!! 110 gal

and there is no vent port in front of the tank. Drilling and taping a new hole is not going to be easy, CB said to try to find a Y connector for the fill??
I was thinking if I removed the fill hose near the gas cap and drilled a hole into it and put a smaller hose in it the fill would work as a fill and a vent? |
That doesn't sound right. Maybe they used the second pick up(some times tanks have a second pick up or return for diesel) instead of the original vent pick up. Check to see if you have a fitting or a pluged hole next to the tank fill (on the tank), if you do, that should of been the vent.

No, tank fill is forward, so is correct. If tank fill is located in the middle, then yes, is installed backwards.

I like the idea of a Y connected to the filler hose, If not drilling is plan B, Just a FYI my filler and vent is towards the transom on my Boat I flip the tank around to make it work, I have no vent issues, my plan was to drill a new vent if I needed to.

since it happens only at rest on the trailer, leave the cap "loose" and see if the problem goes away before drilling.

He has already tested by leaving the cap loose and it corrects the problem. Obviously you can't leave the cap loose all the time because moisture will eventually accumulate in the tank.
I did find a vented filler neck that should alleviate the problem. |

I have a similar issue with my V20, when I try to fill up at the pumps I have to trickle it in slow or fuel will back right up my vent and splash out, this is the second V I have had that does it. I am wondering about relocating or some other alternative to the current vent set up.
Am I the only one that has had this problem? |

Mine will leak out the vent if I fill it too much. I always know about how many gallons will fill it so I listen very closely while filling and one I hear a gurgle I stop. Have not had any problems with it ever since.

I would think that if you use the vented filler that I showed and run another vent line from that filler to the outside as a second vent, it would probably solve the problem when sitting on the trailer. This way, with the filler in the from of the tank he could raise the tongue of the trailer up and it would still vent from the larger filler hose in the front of the tank.

I fill it and leave on the trailer so I don't have to find a gas station at 3 am I put the bow own last night to un block the vent, but I bet I have a boat full of water right now!! CB I saw that vent cap also, but was thinking it needed a hose from the tank to the cap?? If you just put a hose there and on side of the boat it would be great! I have tryed to not filling it all the way but I not to good at it, it really doesn't make muc h noise till pop The boat is going to be on a slip this year, at least in part, I am worried that its going to do it there? And I have to fill it there as the gas dock isn't going to be open in the early morning. |
Just run a vent hose from the small fitting on that filler to a vent outside the boat. Done.

Mine does it on the trailer, on the water, don't make a diff. I think I will try running a new hose this season.
Can't believe I have had two V's with six years age diff and they both do the same thing and no one else here has run into it. Maybe it was just Jersey delivery boats, b@stards.:you: |
MJ, you going to get one of those gas caddy things to fill up the Ox? My old man used to fill up his (now my) V while it was moored out in the harbor. He was too cheap to go to the marina for a fill (can't blame him really). Anyway, we would row out in our little Dyer pram with 3 or 4 5 gallon cans and use a hand pump to pump it in. Got a little dicey if there was any chop coming across Scituate harbor. Nary spilled a drop though.

Hope those vented fillers solve your problem MJ. When I rebuilt my V, I replaced the vent lines and looped them and every since if I fill it completely full it will leak out the vents when I brake and slosh the gas foreward. My V has saddle tanks. Ive been thinking about relocating the vents higher up and more foreward on the gunnels.When I pull it a good ways, I usually stuff paper towels under the clamshells covering the vents to keep the gas off my hull! It works ok.

Reel and I both had 74 and 75 and had the same issues with the vents. We moved them above the rub rail were there is a slant up, worked perfect!!

I do similiar to Reel....I turn it on and see how many "bars" and based on that figure about how many gallons it will take. Then when it starts getting close I tell everyone to shut the @#$%*! up so I can hear, lean my ear close and first sign of a gurgle, I'm done. One of these days I'm going to get an ear full of ethonal blend. :hi:

drained 70 gal. of gas today, we filled all cans me and BS had, even mixed some in his truck and my sons car!! Still have at least 30 gal more to go, hope to get it out tomorrow and fill with stright gas for the 4 stroke.
I thgink i am going with the vented gas cap as a 2nd vent and see how that goes. Got CB's boat almost set today and both should be ready for watrer this week end and we are trying to have a double launch Sunday!! Will keepo you updated!! |
