Spare, Ferm, anybody!
What's the consensus on these older Nissan motors. I've never heard anything really bad to remember it. Other than it doesn't look as if it has tilt/trim, this one looks like its in decent shape. Flyfishin is looking at this boat/motor/trailer combo and thinking about swapping his 2007 14' enclosed trailer for it. Thanks guys.....

A Nissan is what my boss just blew up, be sure to premix.
Got it, thanks RB. Do you know what year model he had?
BR, all i see is a red x. but i have a 4 year old tohatsu 40 on a 13 ft whaler and have enjoyed it so far. as far as i can tell it is a very simple motor with very simple maintenance. i know they have fuel injected models, but mine is a carb model. i went from a 30 hp mariner(yamaha) to this 40 hp and three carbs instead of one, so it burns more gas, but on this skiff, that is not much of a factor. i use the oil injection, but as far as i know the only warning you get if it fails is a locked motor. if your talking about larger hp, i haven't heard much good or bad...
Phat - The red X is a '88 or '89 40 hp Nissan ob hanging on the tranny of a 14' mckee craft of about the same year. Everything I'm seeing & hearing is these are not bad motors. RB is right on with the premix.

A good friend of mine had a 90 hp Nissan on a 24' pontoon for years...ran GREAT...never hadda probleemo...
Scweet thanks Mr. Peelin! :sun:
never had that much experiance with them, I've heard that properlly treated, they are good motors. Biggest probelm I can think of would be parts availability
Thanks Spare. So far Fly is wheelin and dealin....we've sent the pics of his enclosed trailer to this fella this morning to try and work out a trade. I told Fly we'll check the compression and if all checks out we'll drag it home, replace the h2o pump impeller, change LU oil, premix the fuel and run that Nissahatsu until it sh!ts the bed!
I love the little Mckee's. IMO they are as good or better than the Whalers. I've had my dad's out 3 miles on a perfect weather day. Would love to have a 50hp 4 stroke on one  Thanks for everyone's input. |
I've got a 60 Merc on my 14, if I ever get time to get it out from under the cover I'll take some pics. That 60 Merc idles as good as any four stroke, and is allmost as quiet
I remember seeing a few pics of your 14'. I bet it will haul with that 60. Dad's has a 40 and she bumps along +/- 30 mph.
it does ok with the 60, I've only had it in the water once since i got ti done. We took it out and it hopped so bad I redid the layout in teh boat to move more weight fwd, I have yet to take it back out, weather's been to crappy when I've had time. My buddy has one with a 70 Johnson on it, its a pretty good match
The center console on dad's is a good bit forward so it helps a lot to reduce the hopping.
Blue, when looking for a motor, the trim & tilt feature means a lot. my old motor didn't have it and the new tohatsu does. its a BIG difference as for as controling the "hop". i tuck it way under when starting out and trim it up as i get on plane. i can load up the bow with stone crab traps and change the trim as i put out the traps. i'd rather have a 40 with trim than a 60 without..
Phat I agree 100% on tilt/trim. On a side note, the guy sold the 14' mckee that Flyfishin was looking at (the basis for this post). I'm sure its a blessing in disguise. The good thing is Fly got his enclosed trailer all cleaned up and ready for market. Anybody here interested in an enclosed trailer? I may put it up in the classifieds....2006 (new in '07) continental cargo single axle 14' enclosed trailer. Make offer!

look on craigs list down here, there seems to be at least one 14 Mckee a week for sale
Thanks Spare, I been all over CL. Found a vintage 1978 in Sneed's Ferry that looks pretty sweet w/ 25 hp Mercury big foot 4 stroke. Keep an eye out for us.
I put a post on the motor thread for one here local for $1000
I think that 3rd one you linked to is a 17' "Southport" model isn't it SP?
I can't keep all their names straight(and they had a bunch), but some one spent a lot more than $500 fixing it up
Thanks Spare! Good finds....I've looked high and low and I don't think I've seen any of those.
I'll let Flyfishin know. :sun: |
