Replacement Engine Question Well I am looking for a new-to-me engine and I keep finding some Johnson 115HP 20" shafters. My question is, what would be the performance differences from my Evinrude 150HP? Would it just be quiter and better on gas? Would I just not be able to move the V at close to 45 MPH? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. |
What year 115? If it is a 95+ that is a V-4 60 degree looper then it will perform pretty well and be a rock solid engine. The earlier 115's that are the cross-flow engines are still good engines, but not quite as powerful and definately thirstier. |
Shoot, if a 115HP will move a V-20 at 45 mph, then I need to trade in my 200. |
With my 140 on smooth Lake I once saw 39-40 never did tried it again, I am yet to set my WOT timing so I stay under 5500 RPM.. |
So a later model 115 would be a good fit for a V? I am just looking for something dependable that will plane the V and cruise at a decent speed, say 25 - 35 MPH. By the way, I never hit 45, the first year I owned the V I was hitting 40 and then each year I noticed a reduction in top speed, I should have known then that I was losing compression. |
Parish that is what I had on Old School,, works just fine |
Thanks Willy. I am at the point in my life were speed does not matter, I just want to get there, drop some lines, take a nap and then get back. |
If you can find one of the 95+ 115HP OMC loopers then jump on it. They are not speed demons, but they are fairly quiet for a carbed 2 stroke and you can't beat the reliability of them. The 90-175's that were refferred to as the EAGLE series by many has been argued to be the best engines that OMC EVER built. |

Thanks whale, those are the type of numbers I am looking for. So this gives me a good range to look for, 115 to 200. |

Unfortunately with the low 20" transom you are limited by weight. I imagine that you'd want to keep the motor weight under or close to 400lbs which significantly narrows your choices (eliminating almost all newer v6 outboards). As mentioned before your best choices based on price, reliability, fuel economy are going to be the following. I think you mentioned that you wanted to keep your OMC controls . . . so if you have the red plug . . . you are looking at 1995 and earlier. v4 OMC 115 - 130, 140 v6 OMC 60 degree 150 or 175 v6 Merc 2.0L, 2.4 or 2.5L V6 Yamaha 150 - 200 2 stroke carb. v4 Yamaha 115, 130 |
For a 115 OMC make sure it is the late model looper as they are much stronger than the earlier cross-flows. My V-20 would hit 27-28 with just me in it with the 84 115 it had on it. There are quite a few 120-140 85+ loopers out there and they are good engines. There a bit heavy, but pretty good on fuel. A 2.0L or 2.4L MERC, and the 150-200 small block YAMAHAS are also great choices like BS said. |
The one that I had on was a 1990 Evinrude 150 with a 20" shaft. Would a newer engine really weigh more than my previous????? I would think that teh manufacturers would want to make them lighter and still get more power? |

 Here's just one example of the weight/hp comparison for a Mercury 150. 275lbs 1975 Mercury 150 inline 6 359lbs 1979 Mercury V6 150 (BTW 1979 V200 weighs 331lbs) 375lbs 1985 Mercury v6 150 (BTW 1985 V200 weighs 365lbs) 415lbs 1996 Mercury v6 150 EFI 455lbs 2000 Mercury v6 150 Optimax saltwater 635lbs 2006 Mercury v6 200 Verado Now you know why I like the 2.4L Merc's 365lbs is about as lightest v6 200hp made . . . plus they are chrome bore motors! I'm running a 1979 Merc 200 powerhead and it's still a rocket out of the hole. http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...308_Medium.jpg http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...309_Medium.jpg http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...023_Medium.jpg |

 Neat pics, BS... |

 Great information, thanks. |

My motor is supposed to be 410# and its 20", I don't have any trouble with it on the V, just to give you another reference point. Oh, and have I ever mentioned that it gets 5mpg? |
 My old 86 150 Rude was 392 lbs... |
whats wrong with my engine its a 150 mercury 1988 model year and runs perfect but with 3 people on bored and a ton of bait im lucky if i get her to go 32 mph 115 goes 45 something is wrong, and my prop is the right size 15x17 ppppeeeeerrffect |

 A 115 might push a V20 over a waterfall at 45 mph... |
My 115 could barely hit 28 with just me and 20 gallons of fuel on board. |
115 Johnson on a bracketed 85 cuddy, cruise 24-26 and topped at around 35 loaded. Was Old School a fluke? I don't think so. Have others I know that run the later 115's and had good performance like that and got good gas mileage to boot. |

I had a 2000 115 ficht evinrude--never missed a beat and was awesome on fuel, but I did not feel that it would push my V-20 loaded fast enough to put on a good plane without just running the piss out of it. So I put a 25" 200HO E-Tec--which is the Big Block model and it pushes me very nicely without working it at all. It cruises withotu even working at 35mph and gets around 4.4 mpg at this speed. It only weighs in at 496 fully rigged and is not a problem weight wise--we have 4 people and fishing gear,Cooler, ice, fish, bait etc right at the back of the boat and it is okay. If you are looking for a great 115hp engine--look for a Evinrude ficht model--just not the 150 or 175 ficht as they had mapping issues and all melted down. The guy I sold my engine to had a looper 140 and he could not believe the performance difference that the 115 ficht gave him--He called to ell me how happy he was with the fuel burn and the power--he said I did not exagerat at all when I sold it to him, he was very impressed. If I thought my 115 would push the V-20 to 35 mph loaded and ready to run I would have kept it(after all it was paid for). MY .02 on this. |

Don't know if you found an engine yet or not, but I came across this one tonight. These 140's are STRONG runners with lots of torque and can run with most 150's. http://forums.screamandfly.com/forum...d.php?t=207477 |

Not to get off topic..but Bigshrimpin...thats a Gorgeous Seafari!! I love to have one of those some day. Love those lines!! |
That is perfectly fine that you took this off topic. I had a situation come up where my beagle broke his back, now with rehab and all, he has become one really expensive , lucky, dog. Let's just say I probably could have gotten a really nice two year old motor for what I have invested. |
Sorry to hear about your dog parish. Hope he will pull through ok. But I would have done the same for my pooch!! |
He is not a standard beagle. He doesn't howl at any little thing, he is very clean, a good companion to me and my wife and he is only 5 years old. There is also another reason, but it is lengthy and personal. Next week we take him for a therapy evaluation and so far just from what we have told them over the phone, they think they may get his back legs working again. If not, I will get him one of those dog wheel chair thingys, they are pretty kool. they think they can get him walking again. |

By the way Racer, I hope your not related to the first RacerX we had on the board!?!?!? |

MJ was brought up right. If you don't have something good to say... I wonder what the board thinks of Ridge Runner?:oh: I like the 2.4 Merc like Big Shrimpin, only problem with the chrome bore was if and when you overheat the motor, they are typically junk. Mileage ain't as good as the Opti or 4-strokes but not bad compared to some. |
you shouldn't ever be overheating your motor, but if you do . . . the nice part about the 2.4L is that it's only about $1000 to find a good spare 2.4 175 or 200 (less than the cost of a fuel pump for a HPDI/optimax/Etec). |
They told me that if I needed a new fuel pump on my new yamaha its $900:bat::cen::nut: |
