I just want to thank everyone on this forum. without you none of this would of ever happened.I bought my boat last October after reading a post on this forum in the boats for sale section. The guy wanted 800 with a trailer. I talked him down to 425 for the hull only. The gas tank had a hole in it and the transom was rotten. But I could easily look past that and see the potential in this boat. I took it home and started ripping it apart. I had never replaced a transom before. But after doing some research on the forum and talking to some people I work with I went for it. I cut out the splashwell, ripped out all the old wood, and epoxyed in 3 new layers of 1/2" plywood. I followed that up with 3 layers of roven woving wetted out with West System. I replaced the shelf in the bilge for the batteries and oil tank. Putting the splashwell back in wasn't too bad. I ground the edges, epoxyed in some plywood strips on the inside then tabbed it in place. I faired everything out,(if I had more patience I would of done done more fairing but its good enough). Primed inside and out then sprayed everything with white Awlgrip. I had never sprayed before and it turned out better than I thought it would. The boat was a great success this summer. Everybody loves it. I've got over 60 hours on it so far.
So this winters project is to replace the soft floor and maybe add a bench seat over the splashwell. I will Keep everyone posted. As of right now the boat is staying in the water untill I catch a bass. After that the next project can start. |
Nice work! Looks clean.

thanks for the pics...having seen the boat in person I can testify it looks damn good.

Purdy Work captn. What size wood and glass/how much did you use if you dont mind me asking. Im considering laying one more layer of cloth on mine but i cant decide. I wish i had a shop like that.

I used 3 layers of 1/2" plywood. Then I used woven roving. The last layer being woven roving with a heavy matting on the other side. I faired it out with 3M premium marine filler. It came out real strong. I'm confident that it could hold two of the motors that are on it. I plan on doing the same with the floor this winter. I'm going to try and shoot the Awlgrip non skid on it when its done. The floor now is too slippery when its wet.

Its my shop that I work at. I'm just lucky enough to be able to use it for my own projects after hours.

Transom
That does look nice. Unfortunately, I need to do the same to my boat but don't have the skills, time, or tools to do so myself. 2 questions for you...
Would you be interested in redoing the transom on my boat (I live in MD and could bring it up)?? If not, how much do you estimate the average shop would charge to do so? Thanks for your help. |
Price would depend on the fiberglass shop that you go to. It could cost several thousand dollars. Usually around $2000 though. I could redo your transom. Give me a call at 732-803-1313 and we can set something up.
