Bench Seat Project
Objective: Simple to maintain, Cheap, and Practical
Here is what I came up with using Plywood, Resin & Gel Coat. Here is my start with Ply laminated in polyester resin 4 coats dry fitted as shown. Gel Coat in progress. The back will be mounted on SS hinges for easy access to the Motor and tilting etc. http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...DSCF0030-2.jpg http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...l/DSCF0031.jpg http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...l/DSCF0032.jpg Damm Teak Door look at it after a year in the Florida Sun ..Like my X it needs attention I guess :) |
"A BOAT IS LIKE A WOMAN, THE RIGGING COST MORE THAN THE HULL."
Unlike a woman, the boat doesn't nag and when you do get around to giving her a little attention you know she will be right where you left her without the least bit of attitude and she will appreciate every bit you do. Teak simply sucks in the Florida sun. I love the way it looks when you stay on top of it but Starboard is virtually maintenance-free. The seats are yours, we will arrange a meet. Thanks, Vic |

I will remember these words of wisdom ..LMAO |
As they say at McDonalds = I'M LUVIN IT!

gonna be sweet with the gelcoat finish on it....going to something with cushions or leave it bare? you're making this resin and gelcoat thing look so easy I need to start making something.
|
Gel coat is easy don't try to cheat like I did here and over sanded the edges using a palm sander (edges must be done the hard way) I have to re-spray these spots trick is to tape up the sanded area.
As for cushions for the seat I may have something custom done it the fall .. See the edges ? I remove 20 plus mils and expose the resin .. http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c.../DSCF00153.jpg http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/DSCF0053.jpg |
I think i would have put some finish cloth on and faired it. Thats a sweet set up tho. what kind of ply is that? Looks like some nice quality birch ply.
|
Looks good! Going to put my budget operation to shame...

Here is my source of cheap supply http://orlando.craigslist.org/boa/1400810087.html
As for the wood its from Lowes they recommend I use this type for what I am doing, I can't remember the exact name ... Thanks Guys |
Do what?
Man, that is a good deal on the resin and gelcoat. It would be worth the drive from Lakeland. Last resin I bought was $30/gal. Back in 2000 when I was hot and heavy into the rebuild I was paying $17.99/gal and I was buying 10 gallons at a time. I won't even tell you what the gelcoat was running. I could have built another boat with the money I would have saved. COL!

Hey NYMack, there is a guy on Ebay who sells a wide variety of seat cushions. Just do a search for boat seats and they should come up. He often has sets of cushions (i.e. the backrest cushion and the seat cushion). They are generally white with various colors of piping. No idea where he is getting them, but they go pretty cheap. I bought one from that was white with red piping to match the bootstripes and bimini on my V cuddy and put it on a big igloo cooler. Even came with SS screws and snaps. I think I only paid about $15 for it.

At last..
This came out exactly how I planned it , in the upright and lock position the engine still tilt up with no problem , I also add a aluminum support for the back rest, the back rest is locked in place with a wing nut this prevents it from rattling and folding down by itself.
The base is mounted only on two solid stainless hinges I found on ebay it allows the entire seat to tilt or fold forward clearing the splash well completely. The guy that did my enclosure took a template to make cushions for it we see 200 bucks ! http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...d/DSCF0213.jpg WING NUT AND SUPPORT http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...ed/WingNut.jpg Nice mod on the aluminum .. http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...ed/bracket.jpg Sweet hinge ? I can also remove the pin and seat completely http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...eted/hinge.jpg Splash well all clear http://i527.photobucket.com/albums/c...splashwell.jpg Now maybe I will wash the Boat down .. |
Hey those hinges look familiar....:fam:http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/c...6/DSCF3084.jpg
|
Oh yes , I went hunting for those hinges after I saw your post, found em on ebay for 21.00 for the pair free shipping :)
I must say thanks for your detailed post it was what I followed for mine ... |
Looks good, I am going to build a bench seat for mine in 2010.......I promise!!!
|
Mack, that's as clean a job as there's ever been on this site...great work
|
Nice Mac, very well done.
|
Thanks Guys
|
That really is some nice work. I'm going to have to make one for my boat.
|
Please note where the seat was as shown in the first picture and where is seat actually ended up is another story. Clearly shows I am by no means mister perfection just an average Joe tackling some not so average projects with some average results I guess :)
